Taxi drivers have complained that taxi-app company Free Now, formerly known as MyTaxi, is taking a 12% commission on tips that customers make via debit or credit cards.

The Irish Taxi Drivers Federation (ITDF), which represents thousands of drivers across the country, has made a formal submission to a consultation by the Low Pay Commission on practices in the area of tips and gratuities.

In the submission, the ITDF said there was no issue about employers not passing on tips, as most drivers were self-employed.

“Our main concern in this area is that at least one of the taxi apps [that is FreeNow] takes 12% commission on tips paid via credit cards.
