Fable

A fable is a short story that ends with a moral lesson. The characters in a fable are often (but not always) animals. Check out the Twinkl Teaching Wiki for more information about fables.

How can I support my child with their understanding of fables?

Retelling a story is a key skill for young children to learn but it can be tricky to remember all the events in the story. Why not take a look at this great Little Red Hen Cut and Stick Story Map Activity with your child?

This The Boy Who Cried Wolf Word Search features some key vocabulary from the story. Great for consolidating spelling as well as helping to increase familiarity with key plot points and characters, you can use this resource as an opening to other independent writing activities, or just for fun!

Some more fun fable activities for your child to try at home…

  • Create a storyboard that includes the main events from your favourite fable.
  • Create a book cover for one fable and complete with a blurb on the back page. You could use this handy Design a Book Cover Worksheet to help you.
  • Could you create your own fable? First, you will need to choose a moral - your story could be about greed, selfishness or carelessness. Then choose a character - an animal character would be great! Then try and create your fable… Remember, the aim is to help the character learn an important lesson by the end of the story.

Some ingredients and/or materials used might cause allergic reactions or health problems. You should ensure that you are fully aware of the allergies and health conditions of those taking part. If you have any concerns about your own or somebody else’s health or wellbeing, always speak to a qualified health professional. Activities listed within the resource should always be supervised by an appropriate adult. Children should be supervised when using sharp items such as scissors or other tools. Please make sure you are aware that children may put craft items into their mouths, and that they should wash their hands afterwards.
