Mais oui: 'Man From Rio' is stylish, Bond-esque

Jean-Paul Belmondo stars in 'That Man From Rio,' which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Whenever I imagine I'm in a French New Wave movie — and this happens more often than I'd like to admit — the man by my side is Jean-Paul Belmondo. Who else would it be?

Belmondo is best known to American audiences for starring in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960) and Pierrot le Fou (1965). Between those releases he appeared in the more mainstream adventure flick That Man From Rio, directed by Philippe de Broca.

De Broca's movie isn't easy to find (in fact, I've never seen it), but a restored version is screening across the country in honor of its 50th anniversary. Cities are still being booked but include the following:

Now: New York (Film Forum)
Aug. 29-Sept. 4: Miami (Tower Theater)
Oct. 10-11: Santa Fe (The Screen)
Oct. 18: Madison, Wis. (University of Wisconsin Cinematheque)
Dec. 11: Stamford, Conn. (Stamford Theatre)

That Man From Rio was nominated for an Academy Award for best original screenplay; its competition included another newly restored film, A Hard Day's Night.

Below you can see the trailer for the movie, which has been described as a stylish James Bond flick. (On a sad note, Belmondo's female co-star, Francoise Dorléac, died in 1967 when she was just 25. She was the older sister of actress Catherine Deneuve.)
