WARNING: The following article contains themes of drug use.

"Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck. Some nights I call it a draw. Some nights I wish that my lips could build a castle. Some nights I wish they'd just fall off.

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost, oh Lord I'm still not sure what I stand for...

What do I stand for? What do I stand for? Most nights, I don't know anymore."

-Some Nights by Fun. (Copypastes entire song bc the whole thing fits him so well)

LOST is a show full of brilliant characters, but from the moment I met him in the pilot, I knew Charlie was going to be one of my favorites. Charlie's a funny, instantly likable young British guy with a passion for rock music. And he's also one of the show's most human characters.

Awww look at him 😊

All Charlie wants is to make music with his brother Liam. But Liam is soon lured into the darker side of the music world, and becomes addicted to heroine. Charlie initially tries to stop him, but their decaying relationship causes him, too, to fall victim to drugs. Charlie's character arc in the first two seasons centers around his struggle to get clean. The great thing about Charlie's arc is that it's something we can all relate to. I have this terrible habit of picking at my fingers til they bleed. Like Charlie, I have to be strong enough to stop. And it's so beautifully acted by Dominic Monaghan.

One of Charlie's definitive traits, at least in my opinion, is one of my favorite tropes in fiction: the inferiority-superiority complex. Charlie can sometimes be a bit boastful. But this stems from his need to be wanted, to be useful. And just when he feels at his most useless, someone comes along who needs him just as much as he needs her: Claire Littleton.

Claire, who's also one of my favorite characters, is a feisty young woman from Australia whose boyfriend left her with an unborn child. Charlie is kind and caring to Claire, and he takes it upon himself to protect her, likely to atone for some of his past actions. The two become very close and eventually end up together (which made me very, very happy as they are my OTP).

I didn't really like the way Charlie's character was handled in Season 2. All he got to do was get involved in misunderstandings, which made him and everyone around him seem like jerks. But thankfully, Charlie was given an excellent character arc in Season 3, and one of the best episodes in the series: Greatest Hits.

Desmond Hume, another one of my favorite Lost characters who will probably get a chapter later on, repeatedly has visions of Charlie dying, the last of which will lead to the survivors' rescue. Charlie decides he must sacrifice himself for the good of his friends, but not before he writes down the five best moments of his life. The second of these was when a young woman was getting mugged in the street. Charlie stops to help her. The woman tells him that 3 other people saw her but kept walking, and he is a hero for trying to help.

The best moment? When he met Claire.

Charlie is a beautifully written and acted character who, despite only being in the main cast for 3 seasons, remains one of Lost's most selfless, relatable, and memorable characters. We salute you, Charlie Pace.
