Description

Dog Rose is a climbing or trailing, prickly deciduous shrub. The name Dog Rose comes from the Middle Ages when it was thought that the root was a cure for rabies.

Flowers

The aromatic flowers are usually pale pink but can vary from white to deep pink.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. 5-7 leaflets on either side of the stem, serrated with stalks.

Fruits Seeds

Hip: containing numerous seeds, oval-round, bright red.

Edible

Hips: hairy seeds need to be removed. Makes an excellent jelly or syrup. A very good source of vitamin C. Tea can be made from the leaves.

Medical

Hips: astringent, to treat diarrhoea.
