Much-fancied Belgium got their World Cup underway with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Algeria in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

Algeria took a shock lead in the first half, but Belgium responded with two goals in the second to earn all three points.

Belgium enjoyed the first real glimpse of goal. This rasping shot from Axel Witsel was pushed away by Algeria goalkeeper Rais M'Bolhi:

And then, on 25 minutes, we got a shock opening goal.

Jan Vertonghen fouled Sofiane Feghouli, and the referee rightly pointed to the penalty spot:

The teams went into the break with Algeria 1-0 up.

The first big chance of the second half also went their way. Carl Medjani got up well to glance a header, but his effort was just past the post.

Belgium finally pulled things level through substitute Marouane Fellaini. The much-maligned Manchester United midfielder got his big hair on a cross from Kevin De Bruyne and steered a delightful header home.

There were 70 minutes on the clock when Fellaini made it 1-1.
