Manuel Neuer Earns Germany's Footballer of the Year Award for 2013-14 Season

Bayern Munich stopper Manuel Neuer enjoyed a phenomenal 2013-14 season, culminating with a World Cup win, and he was rightfully selected as Germany's Footballer of the Year award on Sunday. 

The Bundesliga shared the news via Twitter:

The award was selected through a poll done by magazine Kicker, with Neuer receiving 144 of 701 votes. The 28-year-old won the award once before, but he still felt honoured, as he told Kicker (h/t to Bundesliga.com):

"This award is an honour for me. really suprised, although obviously aware that I put in some good performances. The fact that we won the World Cup this year gives the award added significance for me."

Bayern Munich dominated the top 10, with five total players ranked. Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus was Neuer's closest challenger, coming very close to winning with 135 votes.

One of the best sweeper-keepers in the world, Neuer sets himself apart with his extraordinary ability to add to the build-up play and serve as an extra outfielder in possession.

His primary job is still to prevent goals, however, and he did an excellent job in 2013-14, winning the World Cup's award as top goalkeeper and helping Bayern to the best defensive record in the Bundesliga, per WhoScored.com.

The Bavarians' Champions League adventure ended in disappointment last year, and Bayern will look to rebound in the 2014-15 season and re-establish themselves as the single largest force in European football.

Challengers like Real Madrid and Barcelona upgraded their attack, so Neuer will be counted on to be at his best once again during the upcoming season.
