Manchester United were one of the the busiest clubs during the final part of the summer transfer window, as Louis van Gaal molded his squad to his liking. And after a rocky start to the season, the January window could play out in a similar way.

A number of star players are already being linked with a move to Old Trafford, and while it's unlikely another batch of world-class talent will complete midseason transfers, it would almost be a shock not to see the Red Devils pull off at least one big-money transfer.

Here's the latest buzz surrounding United's reported top targets.

Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels told Bundesliga Magazin International he's very happy with his current situation, and that a potential transfer move would have nothing to do with money, as reported by the Guardian's Marcus Christenson.

He also claims he currently has no interest in a foreign adventure. When asked about reported interest from the likes of United and Real Madrid, he said:

It’s nice to hear that big clubs like that are interested in you. I take that as a compliment but it doesn’t influence me in any way, otherwise. We earn enough here in Dortmund.

There will always be someone who can pay more than BVB but Dortmund have made a lot of progress during my time here. In any case I believe it’s enough for me. If one day I start thinking about playing abroad, money won’t be the reason. I don’t even think about that at the moment. We still have so much further to go here.

The Germany international cemented his spot as one of the sport's top defenders during the 2014 World Cup but has seen plenty of talented players leave Die Schwarzgelben in the past years.

Dortmund's transfer policy will always fuel speculation regarding their top stars, as pundits wonder how long it will take before they join the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze in turning their back on the club.

The 25-year-old centre-back appears to be perfectly happy with his current situation however, making it very unlikely he could be tempted to leave in January.

AS Roma manager Rudi Garcia continues to tell reporters Kevin Strootman is a key player for his squad, but via Goal's Mark Doyle, he conceded a potential sale of the Dutchman would not be his decision.

While plenty of Giallorossi coaches have dismissed the thought of a January move in recent weeks, club president James Pallotta has remained silent. And Garcia knows the decision would ultimately be his to make:

Strootman for sale? You must speak about this with our president.

But the intention of the club is very clear: Strootman is an important talent for us.

I want to have him available for the home match against City [on December 10], which will be crucial.

He is a midfielder of the highest level and we're waiting for him to return. We hope to have him back soon.

The midfielder is still recovering from an injury that forced him to miss the 2014 World Cup, and in his absence, Belgium international Radja Nainggolan has emerged as one of Serie A's top players and a more than worthy replacement.

Strootman has a unique profile, however, as shared by StatsBomb's Ted Knutson:

Kevin Strootman, Roma 13-14. Very unusual profile. A box-to-box guy with big output at both ends. Come back healthy! http://t.co/OZ9B88L4wC

Nainggolan's emergence is good news for United. As much as Roma would love to have Strootman back on the pitch, their excellent start to the 2014-15 season has made it clear the team will be fine without him. A significant offer in January could tempt the Giallorossi into a sale, providing Strootman's injury concerns are behind him.

Arturo Vidal/Angelo Ogbonna

Calciomercato.com (h/t to Metro) believes the Red Devils are preparing a £51 million double swoop for the Juventus duo of Arturo Vidal and Angelo Ogbonna, filling two of the team's biggest needs in one go.

Vidal is one of the world's best box-to-box midfielders who shines both as a defender and a scorer, and the Chilean was linked with a move throughout the summer, per Metro. Ogbonna is a centre-back with the versatility to line up in any defensive position across the 3-5-2 or 4-3-3.

The 26-year-old defender has been a regular starter for Juventus in 2014-15 but will likely see his playing time diminish once Andrea Barzagli returns from injury. Vidal has only just recovered from an injury himself, but despite missing all of training camp, he already has two goals in four appearances, via WhoScored.com.

There's little doubt both players would present instant upgrades at their respective positions for the Red Devils, but Juventus will be very reluctant to sell two of their top players in the middle of the season.

A £51 million offer is a significant investment, and if both players continue their excellent form, it might not even be enough. Fans are already sick and tired of hearing about Vidal's potential move to the Red Devils, and it looks like the entire ordeal will start all over again in January.
