Portugal were forced to come from behind in their 2016 Olympic men's soccer clash with Honduras on Sunday, but they sealed a 2-1 win at Estadio Nilton Santos.

Alberth Ellis netted a shock opener to put Honduras ahead within the first minute before Rui Jorge's side's dominance began to show in the opening period.

Central defender Tobias Figueiredo netted the equaliser via his head after 20 minutes before poacher Goncalo Paciencia moved his country in front nine minutes prior to the half-time whistle.

Portugal were looking to build on an impressive 2-0 win over Argentina in their first game when they faced their second clash in Group D, and they sealed another three points with a professional second-half display.

Honduras took no time to acclimatise to the magnitude of the contest and scored one of the quickest goals in Olympic soccer history, netting with just 35 seconds on the clock. Ellis rounded off a fine move from the Central Americans, stretching inside the six-yard box and tapping in from close range after some impressive combination play down the left wing by Romell Quioto.

The Olimpia midfielder burst down the wing, demonstrating electrifying pace, before sending a wicked ball into the area for his team-mate to finish well into the bottom corner with Honduras' first attack of the match.

Portugal weren't shaken by the early setback, though, and began to demonstrate their superior technical ability with sustained periods of possession in the Honduras half.

Jorge Pinto's men were happy to surrender field and ball retention with the ambition of launching counter-attacks when chances arose.

However, the Portuguese netted the second goal of the game when they drew level through Figueiredo. The Sporting Lisbon centre-back made no mistake with his header on 21 minutes, latching onto Sergio Oliveira's cross from the left flank.

The UEFA Euro 2016 winners' Olympic side sealed their comeback before the half-time break, with Paciencia stabbing in from close range after Salvador Agra's strike was closed down. The Porto attacker reacted first inside the box to net his third goal in three international games for the under-23 international side.

The Selecao's Bruno Fernandes—who plays his club football for Italian outfit Udinese—continued his impressive start to the Olympic competition with another complete display, pulling strings behind the front two strikers and controlling his team's attacking options.

Honduras were unable to recover from falling behind, with the Portuguese defensive line capable of handling any pursuit by their opponents. The early periods of the contest were a messy affair for both teams, but Jorge's men proved their undoubted quality with flashes of excellence, stemming from their midfield.

The advanced range of passing and control was evident at times, with Honduras forcing a more direct approach with time dwindling in the second period.

Neither goalkeeper was significantly tested following the interval, with chances at a premium and both sides attempting potshots from long range.

The win sees Portugal move three points clear at the top of the table over Honduras. Pointless Argentina and Algeria are set to meet later on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.
