Chelsea player’s new tactical weapon unleashed in World Cup defeat

Andreas Christensen played for Denmark in their defeat to Croatia in the World Cup last night in a new role.

The Chelsea man started the game and was a key player for his team as they held firm against the Croatian attacks.

The game eventually went to extra time and then penalties, with Christensen’s team finally getting knocked out despite some incredible penalty saves from Kasper Schmeichel.

Young Christensen played in midfield from the start, as he had done in their previous fixture. This is really down to Denmark’s relative abundance of central defenders, rather than a move to benefit the 22 year old.

But his ability on the ball makes him a natural fit to advance into a defensive midfield role, much as we’ve seen David Luiz do before in the past, although in Christensen’s case, with a little more composure and stability.

There’s no indication that he will reprise this role at Chelsea, but the fact that he’s capable adds another weapon to his already considerable armoury of skills.
