Steven Meisel 1954

Steven Meisel caught my attention as his way of taking pictures differs from usual ‘fashion photographers’. He has an eye for capturing the beauty of the picture and the person, where not only the clothes are a piece of art but the entire picture itself. He varies from using the most basic photographic techniques and textures to using dozens of colours and variations in one picture itself.

Fur

Gemma Ward

This picture’s beauty is highlighted through the use of lighting. I think the simple features and background is then exaggerated by the fur coat- a fashion statement. Black and white gives it more texture and gives more emotion to the facial features. The shadow on the left gives it more tone as the contrast between light and dark makes  the picture more interestin

Fashion

This picture goes against the usual photographic technique as he uses a busy subject against a busy background. However, both have similar colours and textures. There is a clear separation of where the model meets the background as she is brought forward. The colours and shape of the dress is repeated as the background almost- as if what she is wearing is the background. There is no dominance in this picture as you look at the picture as a whole. The cropping is also unusual which i like.

How to link Meisel to ‘Story Telling’:

  • Meisel uses different genres eg. Fairytail. Use his technique into story telling idea.
  • Using Meisel’s technique of having a background which represents the subject, use that to tell the story about the person being photographed.
  • Use the same model but with different styles/looks. Different views of same person, who they are and who society can make them etc.
  • How what people are wearing tells a story of who they are- clothes/style/look/makeup
  • “This job in particular has a tendency to change lives more than most.”
