Obituary of George Phillip Morrison

George Phillip Morrison III (Phil) Mr. Morrison, 61, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at his home in Charlotte. He was born in Statesville, NC on September 20, 1951, son of the late George Phillip Morrison, Jr. and the late Helen Hicks Sigmon. He was also preceded in death by his dear older brother, Donald Ray Morrison. Phil was a graduate of Statesville High School in 1969, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1979, followed by a degree in Computer Science from CPCC. After 10 years with the American Red Cross, he worked as an Information Technology Manager for Wells Fargo, from which he retired in 2011. Phil is remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He came from humble roots and went on to achieve success well above all expectations. He led a life of service to his family and friends and filled their lives with the joy of music, fishing, travel and coaching. Over the past two years, he fought an increasingly hard battle with pulmonary fibrosis and died at home, surrounded by his family and friends. This time was cherished by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Claire Hoover Morrison; his son, Ray Alton Morrison and his wife Amy, his daughter Sarah Morrison Campbell and her husband Andrew; two grandchildren, Harper Lacy Morrison and Alice Claire Campbell; his sister Dorothy Faye Morrison, and her son Tony Atkins, and his wife Elaine Oliver. He is also survived by the extended Morrison family including two uncles, Bob Morrison and Fred Morrison, two aunts, Francis Morrison and Florence Hicks Huffman. He was also dear to the extended Hoover family, including his mother-in-law, Ann Cotter Hoover. The family would like to thank Doctor James Jones and his staff of the Mecklenburg Medical Group for medical care. They also would like to give a special thanks to friends Dan and Pat Cope for their love and support. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, Friday, August 9th, 2013 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 10, 2013 at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, 3106 Providence Rd., Charlotte, with Father Francis O'Rourke and Father John Hoover, co-celebrants. A luncheon will follow in the Church Hall. The interment will be announced next week. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.
