o cabe duda de que Colombia disfrutó hace cuatro años de la mejor Copa del Mundo de su historia. Los sudamericanos brillaron enormemente, ganando sus cuatro primeros partidos para plantarse imbatidos en la ronda de cuartos de final. Aquí, el cruce fue caprichoso para los cafeteros. Brasil ni mucho menos se encontraba en su mejor momento, pero tenerlo como rival en su propia casa siempre es incómodo y, a manos del anfitrión (2-1), murió el sueño de una selección que dibujó durante varios instantes el mejor soccer de todo el campeonato.

a participación de los “Ticos” en Rusia 2018 significará su cuarta en los últimos cinco campeonatos. Además de esta regularidad, los costarricenses han ido mejorando en cada ocasión hasta alcanzar un hecho sin precedentes en su historia, llegando a los cuartos de final en Brasil 2014. La gesta igualó el mejor registro de un equipo representante de la CONCACAF en un Mundial, logrado solo por México (1986) y Estados Unidos (2002). La hazaña de Costa Rica no fue ni mucho menos flor de un día, sino el resultado de un trabajo serio que continúa dando frutos.

éxico ha sido uno de los conjuntos más regulares en los últimos seis Mundiales. En todos ellos, el cuadro hispanoamericano ha salvado la primera ronda del certamen, a pesar de verse emparejado con rivales complicados como, por ejemplo, Italia, Portugal y Brasil. Sin embargo, los mexicanos no han podido superar, en ninguna de estas seis ocasiones, la ronda de octavos de final. La suerte ha vuelto a ser esquiva al cuadro azteca en Rusia 2018. A pesar de lo complicado del grupo, el cuadro panameño afronta el Mundial con una ilusión enorme. erú se convirtió en una de las mejores de Sudamérica a principios de los años setenta, llegando a disputar hasta tres Mundiales. Sin embargo, después de todos estos éxitos, el balompié peruano se hundió en las profundidades del continente, donde selecciones como Paraguay, Colombia, Ecuador y hasta Bolivia le pasaron por encima inmisericordemente. Rusia 2018 ha marcado un nuevo punto de inflexión en la historia del soccer de este país. La clave para conseguir tal hazaña fue la sabia dirección desde el banquillo de Óscar Washington Tabárez. El veterano entrenador construyó una sólida defensa y sacó jugo a un explosivo ataque en el que brilló Diego Forlán quien, gracias a sus cinco goles, fue designado mejor jugador del torneo. Gran referencia del Atlético de Madrid, uno de los equipos que menos goles recibe en toda Europa, el defensa central uruguayo volverá a comandar la zaga charrúa. Godín es infranqueable en el uno contra uno, defiende la posición como nadie y es un líder nato. Además, es un constante peligro para la portería oponente en acciones a balón parado, debido a su gran habilidad para rematar de cabeza. Uruguay lo necesitará si quiere mostrar su mejor versión en Rusia 2018.

Si pudiéramos hacer una alineación con cualquiera de los jugadores que disputarán la Copa del Mundo no sería fácil escoger, pero sin lugar a dudas tendríamos un equipo plagado de estrellas, casi perfecto. De esta manera, hemos seleccionado a los once mejores futbolistas en cada posición.

Hablar del brasileño es, sin lugar a dudas, hablar del mejor lateral izquierdo ofensivo del mundo, durante ya varios años. La capacidad de recorrer largas distancias y la habilidad técnica de Marcelo son impresionantes, recordando los grandes laterales con los que siempre ha contado la selección verde-amarela, incombustibles en el desborde. La banda izquierda será un espectáculo en el próximo Mundial gracias a la combinación entre Marcelo y Neymar, que seguro creará estragos a los rivales de la escuadra brasileña.

JOSHUA KIMMICH

Pese a ser discutido su compromiso con La Roja, Piqué siempre ha demostrado que, literalmente, se parte la cara por España. El defensa central del Barcelona es el jugador que todas las selecciones desearían tener. Posee estatura, excelente toque para sacar el balón dominado, colocación magistral y velocidad. Piqué, ideal para el estilo de juego del combinado que dirige Julen Lopetegui, saltará a la cancha con una motivación extra para alzar la Copa, pues este será, posiblemente, su último Mundial.

El portero del Barcelona se ha ganado la titularidad este año en Alemania por encima de Manuel Neuer, mejor jugador de la pasada Copa del Mundo en su posición. Neuer ha sido finalmente incluido en la lista del seleccionador Joachim Löw, a pesar de haber estado casi toda la temporada lesionado. Ter Stegen sobresale por ser un guardameta muy completo. Lo más destacado de su juego son grandes reflejos y la capacidad para cerrar espacios en el uno contra uno.

Alemania vuelve a tener un lateral derecho con enorme potencial en este joven jugador. Pocos años después de la retirada de Philipp Lahm, surge otro carrilero con grandes prestaciones que se ha apoderado claramente de la banda derecha germana. Con depurada técnica y un rigor táctico que le hizo jugar hasta en el centro del campo con Pep Guardiola en el Bayern Munich, Kimmich será el defensa derecho más eléctrico en Rusia 2018, capaz de incursionar constantemente hasta territorio enemigo.

Además de poseer una técnica y nociones de juego sin balón excelsas, Modric, que ofrece lecciones de soccer cada domingo en la liga española, ahora tendrá que guiar a una selección croata que siempre ha llegado a las grandes citas con enormes expectativas, pero que acaba decepcionando.

El habilidoso delantero es la esperanza de una de las selecciones favoritas para ganar la Copa. Destinado a ser el relevo de Ronaldo y Messi como referente futbolístico en el panorama mundial, el brasileño quiere superarlos a ambos, liderando a su selección hasta la cima de Rusia 2018. Bajo la dirección de Tite, Brasil trabaja como un bloque con mucho rigor defensivo. Sin embargo, arriba, el espectáculo y los goles los pone Neymar, técnicamente superdotado para la práctica del soccer.

Como demostró en Brasil 2014, el centrocampista ofensivo es la gran referencia de su talentosa selección. Esta temporada, James se ha consagrado en un conjunto europeo grande como el Bayern Munich, donde ha retrasado su posición para tener más influencia en el juego. El colombiano es un excelente llegador, que suele marcar una gran cantidad de goles para sus equipos y que posee, además, un genial toque de balón que otorga una dimensión especial a Colombia en acciones de estrategia.

El delantero portugués, hombre gol en Europa, tendrá el mismo reto que Messi: darle un Mundial a su selección. Portugal, vigente campeón del Viejo Continente, debe confiar en Ronaldo, un atleta que posee todas las cualidades físicas de un buen rematador, además de un potente disparo que le permite ser un peligro también en los tiros libres. Tras llevar al Real Madrid de nuevo a la cima europea, el luso llegará a Rusia 2018 en un excelente momento de forma.

El argentino es un jugador ofensivo único e irrepetible, capaz de decidir un partido cuando el balón cae en sus pies, ya sea de falta, tras driblar a varios jugadores o con un destello de magia. Neymar’s magic was also the key in the road to Russia 2018. The skilled forward is the reference of a whole nation that lives this sport as no one. At 26, the Brazilian star will play his second World Cup. In the previous tournament hosted on his home soil, he carried too much responsibility on his backs. IT IS COLOMBIA’S TIME!

here is no doubt Colombia played the best World Cup of its history four years ago. The South American team shined, winning its first four games to reach the quarterfinals undefeated. However, destiny was hard on the squad that had to face the host nation. Although Brazil was not at its best, playing at home made a difference and in a 2-1 defeat Colombia was eliminated from the World Cup. Players were received as heroes back at home by a country that sees Russia 2018 with renovated hope. The reasons are

Led by the same head coach, Argentinian José Pékerman, the heart and soul of the squad is coming back with the addition of veteran striker Radamel Falcao, who missed the Brazil tournament with a knee injury. The draw was good for the Colombians. They will share Group H with Poland, who has not advanced to the tournament’s second round since 1986; Senegal, competing on its second World Cup; and Japan, whose world ranking has dropped below the 50th position. The forecast is really positive for the national squad, which will be led by talented James Rodriguez. One of the best players in the world, James can organize the team in midfield and can also come up from the second line to capitalize on his great scoring ability.

ussia 2018 will mean the fourth participation for “Los Ticos” in the World Cup out of their last five opportunities. In addition to this consistency, the Costa Ricans have improved in each occasion, setting a personal mark in Brazil 2014, where they were only one penalty away from becoming the first team from CONCACAF to get to the semifinals. Other two squads to reach the quarterfinals from the area have been Mexico (1986) and the United States (2002). Costa Rica’s deed was not a fluke. It came as the result of hard work started by

Colombian coach Jorge Luis Pinto, who established a strong defensive system, including five men on defense, four on midfield and only one forward. With a brilliant qualifying tournament, the Costa Ricans got an easy berth to Russia 2018, eliminating the United States in the process by beating them twice in San José and New Jersey. There is no doubt this squad shines as a team. But if we needed to highlight a player, that would be goalkeeper Keylor Navas. After a spectacular performance in the last World Cup, Navas signed with Real Madrid, where he has shined in three Champions Leagues. Now the Costa Rican is regarded as one of the best three goalies in the world.

WILL TRY TO BREAK THE ROUND OF 16 JINX

eam Mexico has been one of the most regular squads in the last six World Cups. In all of them, the Mexicans have surpassed the first round of the tournament despite facing hard opponents like Italy, Portugal and Brazil. However, they have failed to move on to the quarterfinals in all of these six tournaments. Luck did not favor Mexico in the draw for Russia 2018. Once again the group does not look hard, having to play against Germany, Sweden and weak South Korea. The Germans are the favorites, so the main opposition should come from the Swedes, who

eliminated the Italians in the European wild cards. Despite facing a very complicated task, the Centro American squad will travel to Russia full of hope. eru became one of the top South American squads at the beginning of the 1970s, reaching up to three World Cups in twelve years. Two of the three times, they made it to the quarterfinals, losing only to the nation that ended up winning the tournament. But after achieving great success, Peruvian soccer dropped and sank in the depths of the continent, falling lower than countries like Paraguay, Colombia, Ecuador and even Bolivia. Russia 2018 is the new breaking point in the history of soccer in the country. Like the good steeds Team Peru raised its game

Godín is phenomenal at stopping one-on-one situations. He positions very well on the field and is a natural leader. Godín is also dangerous offensively thanks to his ability to head the ball on free kicks. If the Uruguayans want to make a run in Russia 2018, they need to rest on his shoulders.

If we could create a lineup picking every player that will participate in the World Cup, the selection process would not be easy. However, we can make an 11-man squad full of stars near perfect.

The Brazilian has been regarded for years as the best offensive left fullback in planet football. His skills, including his capability to cover the whole side of the field, are amazing. Marcelo makes us remember the great fullbacks Team Brazil has had for many generations: Junior, Roberto Carlos, Cafú… They were all players who overwhelmed their opponents with their speed and dribbling ability. With Marcelo and Neymar combining efforts, Brazil’s left side will be a spectacle in the World Cup.

FC Barcelona’s goalkeeper is the starter for Team Germany this season over Manuel Neuer, who was selected the best player in his position in World Cup 2014. Despite an injury that has kept him out of the playing field for several months, Neuer has been included in the final list given by German coach Joachim Löw. As a solid and reliable goalkeeper, Ter Stegen should remain the starter. He has great reflexes and his ability to stop one-on-one situations is unmatchable.

Some people questioned his commitment to Spain, but Piqué has literally given his blood for the national squad. Barcelona’s center back is the type of player every coach would like to have. He has excellent touch to come out of defense with the ball controlled, masterful placement and speed. He is also the ideal defender for the system the Spaniards play. Piqué faces the tournament anxious to win his second title in what likely will be his last World Cup.

This young player gives Team Germany another excellent right fullback. A few years after Philipp Lahm left the national squad, this player comes up to cover the German right side with full guarantees. With an excellent technique and very solid tactical concepts, Kimmich can even play in the middle of the field, as he did last season with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich. There is no doubt he will be one of the most dangerous right fullbacks in Russia 2018.

This season James has astounded fans while playing for great European club Bayern Munich, where he has backed his position to have more influence in the game. The Colombian possesses great ability to reach the box from the second line, scoring many goals this way. He also has an excellent touch for the ball, making Team Colombia extremely dangerous in free kicks.

Nobody scores as many goals in Europe’s Champions League as this Portuguese forward. Ronaldo will face the same challenge as Messi — he will try to win for his country his first World Cup. Portugal, who recently claimed the European championship, will trust Ronaldo, an impressive athlete who also has a very hard shot that makes him dangerous with free kicks. The striker reaches the tournament in great form after guiding Real Madrid once again to the European summit.

The Argentinian is a unique offensive player who can defeat an opposing team with a hard shot from outside the box, a free kick, or after advancing with the ball and dodging several opponents in the way. Messi faces the biggest challenge of his prolific career as he will try to finally win the World Cup in his fourth attempt. If the best player in the world can come into the tournament inspired and motivated, he will be more than capable of conquering the only obstacle that remains in his soccer career.

This is Iniesta’s final season with FC Barcelona and his last World Cup. The player who has given the most to Spanish soccer wants to wrap things up with another championship. The midfielder, who keeps the ball away from defenders like nobody else, excels in a squad where ball-possession has become its biggest weapon. Iniesta can destroy opposing teams thanks to his game vision and his capability to trespass defensive lines, advancing with the ball seemingly tied to his shoes.
