MODERN WAY OF SELLING AN ARABIAN HORSE 2020

ARABIAN HORSE AUCTION AT STATE STUDS OF POLAND by Urszula Łęczycka z photos by Sylwia Iłenda, Ewa Imielska-Hebda, Karolina Misztal, Lidia Pawłowska

Global pandemic situation had placed all Arabian horse community in front of a new reality in very different situations. Quarantines and closed borders influenced not only most of the 2020 shows around the globe but also selling horses had slown down as potential buyers couldn’t travel to see them and participate in the auctions. Most of online auctions have taken place but they usually do not bring so many emotions and excitement as those taking place in reality. In this situation a very interesting innitiative came from Polish State Studs that traditionally organised a winter auction annually just before Christmas time. But this year they proposed a very modern way of selling the horses online. The auction catalogue included 25 mares and 2 stallions of various ages and good quality, mostly young, both show and breeding prospects representing Polish top damlines that was a great opportunity to purchase valuable breeding material from Michałów, Janów and Białka Studs. The online catalogue has been published as usually – few weeks ahead of closing the sale but the final bidding have taken place at Michałów Stud location being streamed live online

by ArabianEssence. The buyers had chance to register for the bidding and participate in live auction while all the horses have been presented at Michałów Stud indoor arena at noon of 19th December. The idea has been welcomed with big enthusiasm of the community. There have been many comments from different countries that the option to watch the horses live gave the chance of better estimation of the real beauty and quality than just a pre recorded videos and photos of the lots. As the result, over half of the horses offered have found their new homes including beautiful Esparto daughter Formiss that will stay at her homeland and surely will bring some fun at the shows for her new owner Black Lady Arabians. Representing the same damline of Forta – 2019 Polish National Junior Champion Filly Florissima by Sahm El Arab was undoubtedly the star of this auction but the offered price of 45.000 euro was not enough to sell this beautiful filly. Another mare from this damline – Flaminia by Gaspar has been sold for 10.000 euro. It is good proof that the unbeaten results of 2020 European and Polish National Champion Colt – Ferrum have promoted the

Michałów’s Forta line around the world raising the interest for the horses from that blood. The aution was opened with the further record holder – Primrose as lot no.1. This young, pretty showy daughter of Equator out of Primawera is maternal sister to the multichampion Piacenza. The total of 123.000 euro has been earned that day by Polish State Studs for 15 horses. It was an important income in the situation on the market and global economy being in difficult stage. The modern idea of live streamed auction brought the excitement that we used to know from the past auctions taking place in different countries before pandemic back. And the most important – many horses found their new homes and State Studs became a cource of valuable breeding stock despite the closed borders again. And even if Marek Romański, the director in chief of Michałów Stud says that the next auction of Polish State horses will take place in the summer during Pride of Poland but we hope that the innitiative of live online opportunity of purchasing the perals of Poland will became a new tradition of our community also next years in December. q

An interview with Omer Saleem, breeder of Arabian horses and President of the Arabian Horse Association of Pakistan (AHAP) by Monika Savier

T SPECIAL

The country that is called Pakistan today has always been a country of horses. As early as 500 BC, the area was part of the ancient Achaemenid Persian Empire, which was famous for breeding excellent and noble horses. In 712 AC, General Muhammad bin Qasim of Syria entered Pakistan, bringing 6000 Arabian horses from Mesopotamia and from today’s Syria with him. By that, he may have been one of the greatest importers of Arabian horses into Pakistan (see inset). Another great importer was Muhammad Akbar, a Great Mogul of India who brought Arabian horses for his cavalry units in the circa 1500 AC. Later, there were the English with their horses, staying for a long time and exerting substantial cultural influence on India. Racetracks were built and the upper class played polo, while the mostly poor rural population kept horses as beasts of burden. Pakistan is a part of the Indian subcontinent and by that, has long been an object of desire for various traders and merchants from Europe, with the English foremost and doing everything in their power to establish permanent branch offices on the subcontinent since about 1600, to

facilitate exporting the valuable products of India to England. They founded the British East India Company which became a major factor of power in India in 1757, and was to be the basis of almost 200 years of British colonial rule in that country. From 1857 on, the British government exerted direct power in the area via their privileges and prior claim in the East India Company. There was increasing resistance from the population, with the conflicts between Hindus and Moslems no longer manageable, until finally on August 14, 1947, the power was handed over to India and the new state of Pakistan was created, merging regions with different population groups, cultures, and religions. This made Pakistan and India independent states and separate members of the British Commonwealth. The English did not only leave their horses, but as a result of their conflict-laden colonial policy, they also left a Pakistan that needed to re-invent itself and is struggling with that heritage up to this day. Today, Pakistan’s vulnerable democracy has reached the point where young, well-educated citizens from out of the civil society are able to take the initiative in various ways in order to live

for progress in the country – and to fight for it, if necessary. One of them is Omer Saleem. He is 35 years old, a key player in the world of Arabian horse breeding, and in our interview, he tells us of his varied life and his horse breeding experience with straight Egyptian Arabians. In Omer Saleem’s world, Arabian horses with a WAHO passport will not necessarily be issued documents, which is why he founded a registered association that can take over this part. He succeeded in motivating a whole number of breeders into affiliating with WAHO horse breeding, regarding Arabian horses as a part of Muslim culture and maintaining them accordingly. However, the country needs fresh imports of purebred Arabians with WAHO documents. Omer organizes and manages imports, with the horses not arriving by ship as they did in the Middle Ages, but by container flown in by Air Cargo. Omer needs to be able to rely on the honesty of the European breeders, as he buys by phone for himself and his fellow breeders. A big risk for them all – Pakistan is not a country on the Gulf, where the oil wells brim over. Pakistanis in rural areas love horses, but they can’t afford to spend lots of money on them. In Europe, on the other hand, horse breeding is an expensive hobby and horses come at a price. So a compromise needs to be found, spanning the extremes of these different markets. Omer shoulders the responsibility towards his fellow breeders and can do no more than hope that the horses leaving the containers on the airport after arrival are healthy and really look like they did on the beautiful pictures that were sent via WhatsApp. Not every breeder in Europe is aware of the responsibility he has here and that you cannot send anything but healthy good breeding

stock to Pakistan, as when dealing with that still emerging horse breeding country, this is what fairness requires. Recently, some more horses from Europe arrived in Pakistan. Omer says they were OK so far – not exactly the sounds of enthusiasm. Next month, another transport is due to arrive. We honestly wish him success for that. Omer has new productive ideas, too. He aims to organize the first Arabian Horse Show in Pakistan and wants to train more Arabians for the highly

popular horse sport of TentPegging, so as to advertise the breed. On all the horses and his experience with horse breeding in his country, he is just finishing a book due for

publication this year. We are sure to hear more from Pakistan soon on the subject of Arabian horses. Which is a good thing, as these horses will be good for the country - once again. q

6000 Arabian Horses into Today’s Pakistan in 712 AD Without meaning to, General Muhammad Bin Qasim of Syria may have been one of the greatest importers of Arabian horses into Pakistan. Born in 695 AD, he was the nephew of the governor of what is mostly Syria and Yemen today and what the Umayyad Caliphate was then. His uncle appointed the highly-talented Bin Qasim Governor of Persia while in his teens, and a General after he had crushed the rebellion in that region. What was more important for horse breeding in Pakistan? With 6000 horses and 6000 camels, Muhammad bin Qasim conquered the Sindh and Punjab regions along the Indus River, which today are provinces within Pakistan, for the Umayyad Caliphate. Arabs had trade with India and Eastern Asia then, carried out via a sea route, which came to be unsafe due to plundering pirates of Sindh. Therefore, the Umayyad wished to consolidate their rule and to secure the trade route. After a pirate raid on Arab ships, he ordered Muhammad Bin Qasim to attack Sindh. Bin Qasim led 6000 Syrian cavalry who were, at the borders of Sindh, joined by six thousand camel riders. Muhammad Bin Qasim’s army marched along the Indus, defeated the Sindh ruler’s forces at Rohri, capturing Daibul and taking control of Sindh in 712 AD. After the conquest of Multan and Gajirat, the young man took his conquering army through Punjab to the borders of the then Kingdom of Kashmir.

Mohammed Bin Qasim – the first Muslim invader who spread the Islam in India

Bin Qasim stayed with his army for three years. Just 17 years old, he established peace and acceptance of Muslim rule by the natives of Sindh and Punjab, in return for non-interference in their religious and cultural practices. When Bin Qasim’s uncle died, he was succeeded by a caliph who was a bitter enemy of the Qasim family. The Caliph called Mohammad Bin Qasim back from Sindh and put him to death in 715 AD at the age of twenty.

“ INTERVIEW WITH

O M ER S ALEEM

Monika Savier: Arabian horse breeding in Pakistan – it is not widely known that this is existing at all. Can you give me some general information? Do you know how many breeders you have there and how many Arabian horses? Omer Saleem: Since the creation of Pakistan in 1947, only the army attained Arabians from time to time in the form of imports or state gifts from various countries. The Pakistani Army became a member of WAHO in 1997 and their MONA depot in Mandi Bahauddin is now the main authority of Arabians in Pakistan. These horses were not available to the general public and there was a long arduous process of purchasing them which was only possible if one had certain contacts. In around 2007 the first imports were done by civilians and by now Pakistani civilian owners count a total of about more than130 imported Arabian horses and their progeny. The vast majority of these Arabian horses are being bred in the province of Punjab. 2013 marked the emergence of the Arabian Horse Association of Pakistan (AHAP), which also started the

much-needed collaboration among civilian owners who have added top Arabian bloodlines (Straight Egyptians and purebred Arabians) to the horse stock of this country. At the beginning and in our first meetings, AHAP had 10 to 12 members, which has risen to around 75 at present. Savier: Was there a history of breeding Arabians in

SPECIAL

Pakistan before that? And if yes, where did the horses come from, do you happen to know that? Saleem: Arabian horses and the spread of Islam go hand in hand. Before Pakistan was founded as a state, India was referred to as the subcontinent. The first Arabians were brought to the subcontinent as early as the 8th century by the Muslim saint and great-grandson of our Prophet (Peace be upon him P.B.U.H), Abdullah Shah Ghazi, to the port of Karachi when he came here as a horse trader. Also, in the same time period, Muhammad Bin Qasim invaded India in the province of Sindh with a cavalry of 6000 fine Arabian Horses.

From then on, the Mughal emperors, most notably Babur and Akbar, kept acquiring Arabians on a regular basis to maintain their army and to mix them with the local breeds to improve their quality. These Mughal emperors had officers who inspected every horse being brought into the subcontinent by the horse traders and would purchase and send the best ones to the royal stables. Arabian horses always came in by the sea route, while other breeds such as the Kabuli and Central Asian breeds came by land routes. Emperor Akbar even imported 500 Arabian stallions and sent them to different parts of the empire to breed with the local mares and hence improve their progeny for use in the Mughal Cavalry. Arabians have always been the most expensive breed and were hence reserved for the nobility, while the common person, having no other option, purchased other breeds, which were cheaper. The Arabian horse is still currently the most expensive horse breed in Pakistan. The native country “desi (local) horse we see today is a mix of a number of breeds (Kabuli, Persian, Central Asian horses, Thoroughbreds, and Arabian). The fiery temperament is similar to that of the Arabian, however in functionality, disposition and even beauty it is a far way off. Trade of Arabians increased at the time of the English, as this horse was not only used as a warhorse and a

long-distance horse but also in races, hunting and Polo. British officers used to visit the stables of Abdul Rehman Minnie, a prominent horse trader from Arabia, to select the best Arabian horses for their own use. Arabian horses that performed extremely well in races and other sports were exported from the subcontinent, to England and also to Australia. Savier: What role do the straight Egyptians play? Do the Straight Egyptian breeders have a different motivation from that of the other breeders of Arabians? Saleem: In Pakistan, currently there is more inclination to breed SE Arabians as they are believed to be Asil and hence pure. The dedication to breed pure comes with our religion and out of our love for our Prophet (P.B.U.H) There is a second religious dedication factor which is linked to the horses of the Prophet Suleiman (PBUH). Yet another factor is that SE horses have proven themselves here at all levels. Initially there were many misconceptions here created by breeders of the country “desi mixed breed regarding the functionality of the Arabian horse. Believe it or not - over 90% of horse owners, particularly in rural areas, had never seen an Arabian. My Straight Egyptian stallion GR Assad was one of the first SE horses to come to Pakistan and has proven himself in most sports in the country. He has participated in Endurance and has led the TentPegging section of Arabian horses at a major event in Islamabad. The SE is becoming the horse of choice for the people here because it is not only beautiful with an

excellent character, but also has the ability to perform as an outstanding sports horse if bred accordingly. However, once shows start to be held in Pakistan, the breeding of purebred Arabians will also start to gain momentum here, I’m sure. Savier: After reading about Pakistan, I wonder how this country gets along with the different ethnic groups, languages, and religions. In our context: are there certain population groups that breed predominantly Arabian horses? Saleem: Pakistan is a country with many languages, just like our native horse is a mix of many breeds. However nearly everyone in Pakistan understands the Urdu language. There are people following different religions, however Arabian horse breeders are all Muslims. In Pakistan, the sport of Tent-Pegging is a cultural thing, which is why in some areas of the Punjab province there is a horse in every household. There are local events and big events and there are as much as 800 to 1000 horses participating in some events. Punjab is the land of five rivers and has good agriculture, so keeping a horse is not very expensive there. Moreover, due to a high population and few job opportunities the cost of labour is quite low. 90% of all Pakistani Arabian horses are being bred in the province of Punjab. Around 6% of the Arabians are bred in the province of Sindh, and only 4% in the provinces of Baluchistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Kashmir combined.

Savier: Is horse breeding highly regarded in Pakistan, or more part of rural agriculture? And are there women in Pakistan who are active as breeders or riders? Saleem: Well, while the top-quality horses are afforded by the rich, there are commoners keeping horses as well. For now, Arabian horses are only being bred and purchased by the rich due to their high cost. However, some people have started to get their local mares, referred to as “desi”, covered by Arabian stallions, and this has given outstanding results. These “desi” mares already have Arab blood and thus nicked well with the imports, so the quality of this horse stock has been improved. Pakistan is a very conservative religious country mostly, and there are rarely any good women riders or breeders as far as I can observe. Right now, all Arabian horse breeding is done by men. Riding itself is considered a manly sport by the majority here, although Islam permits riding for women and we have examples in history where Muslim women used to ride their horses and would help men in battle. I hope that times will change and we will see more women learn this sport and get active as breeders. Savier: What do people in Pakistan mainly breed for: the racetrack, endurance, show, leisure time riding? Do Arabian Horse Shows play a role in Pakistan? Saleem: In Pakistan, by the efforts of AHAP, Arabians are now being used for the sports of endurance and of Tent Pegging. There was stiff resistance from the

local “desi” people initially where they assumed that the Arabian horse is just a show horse and has no functionality. However, in the course of time and with the increasing number of Arabian horses in sports, everyone is updating their knowledge. Around five endurance events have been conducted to date by AHAP and the FEI chapter of Pakistan. Endurance was picking up as a regular event until the core person of FEI Pakistan, Mr. Abid Tarin, left and became Deputy Secretary General of the Asian Equestrian Federation, relocating to Qatar. Tent-Pegging is already the biggest horse sport in Pakistan, and Arabians have shown their presence and participated in these events several times now. Moreover, people are also using them for leisure as they are beautiful and great riding horses. Showing, unfortunately, is an area we have not been able to work upon yet, and we would need international trainers and judges to support AHAP to harness the immense potential we have here, and make shows possible in Pakistan. I have several targets for 2021. I plan to get to work with FEI to arrange an endurance event. I would like to get support and guidance in the form of trainers and judges to organize and execute the first Arabian Horse Show in Pakistan. Along with my Arabian stallions Assad and Karam, I would like to be representing Arabians in all major Tent-Pegging events throughout the country.

Savier: You mentioned the sport of “Tent-Pegging“ several times now. I admit I’m not familiar with it – what is it about? Saleem: Tent-Pegging is an ancient cavalry practice sport. It is said to have originated at the time of Sultan Saladin who used to attack enemy camps and pull out the pegs of their tents. The pegs are the pieces of wood that keep the stabilizer lines of the tents’ side walls in the ground. So pulling them out would cause the tents to collapse on top of the sultan’s enemies. There are many other stories that attribute the sport’s origin to the Arabs themselves as they used to conduct raids on neighbouring tribes and knew about uprooting their tents. This sport was later on adopted in the subcontinent and now is the most widely played horse sport in Pakistan. For the sport version, there is a peg fixed into the ground and the rider has to lift up the peg with either his lance or sword, based on the particular competition, while in a full gallop. Taking the peg out and crossing the finish line is worth 4 points, but if the peg was just touched, or dropped before the line was reached, only two points are given. There are individual awards as well as team awards. Teams are referred to as “sections” and consist of four players. Tent-Pegging: The peg is picked up by the lance

Tent-Pegging has been an internationally acknowledged sport for many years now, also recognized by the FEI, and Pakistan regularly competes at international levels. In 2019 I was fortunate enough to lead the first ever Arabian horse section in the history of Pakistan in a major event of Tent-Pegging in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad. GR Assad, my SE stallion who is a grandson of Ansata Halim Shah, was the star performer of the event and caught the eye of all participants with his beauty and performance. Savier: Who or what is MONA that you also mentioned before? They seem to be more than just major horse breeders in Pakistan. Saleem: The British were the ones who initially established MONA Depot. It is the biggest horse, donkey, and mule breeding facility in Pakistan, operated and run by the Pakistan Army. They breed several breeds of horses such as Thoroughbreds, Anglo Arabians, Percheron, Hanoverian, Arabian etc. WAHO gave membership to MONA in 1997, as at that time MONA owned 99% of all Arabians in Pakistan and registered all the horses existing then, through a series of detailed

DNA testing. More than 23 years later, meaning now, the ratio of Army-owned MONA horses as compared to horses owned by civilians is nearly 50% to 50%, and hence many problems have cropped up which prompted civilian breeders to found the Arabian Horse Association of Pakistan (AHAP). Savier: It’s not often that in the context of Arabian horse breeding, there is a cooperation of “military” and “civilian” needed. I take it there are problems – have ways of tackling them been found already? Saleem: Well, recently a very positive meeting took place between MONA and AHAP on the issues that civilian breeders face with MONA. WAHO secretary Katrina Murray was asked to contact the Army for that, and subsequently the first meeting was held at MONA on the invitation of the Colonel who is second in command there. There were three main issues we talked about: Fundamentally, being an army establishment, MONA is not accessible to civilians, unless they have references or contacts within the army. Hence, there is nearly no

coordination between civilian breeders and MONA. The maximum coordination is that the civilian breeders pay an annual fee as per quantity of horses, and can collect the papers of the horses they import when the papers

arrive at MONA from the international registries. Because frequent postings and transfers are normal in the army, any coordination we civilians have with any existing officer or the commandant is finished when a new one comes in, and we have to start all over again. And there is the issue that MONA does collect the WAHO fee that is to be paid every year by every breeder, but is not in the habit of handing over any horse registration or foal registration documents to the civilian breeders who paid the fees. The same with sales and purchases going on - there are no proper transfer documents issued or procedures followed. Also, the last stud book printing was done 8 years ago. This means that there are foals for which officially payment was made to WAHO annually, but the owners did not get any documents or papers from MONA, and then these foals became stallion or mares and went on to produce foals in their turn. As I said, it was a very positive meeting where AHAP agreed to sponsor the stud book and to create a system where horse registration is streamlined against a standard fee. Work is in progress and I am very hopeful that we will be able to print the next stud book in 2021.

Savier: How do you and your fellow breeders keep informed about Arabian horse issues? Which role do online social media play in your country? Saleem: The main source of information, videos and pictures, believe it or not, is Facebook. However, Instagram and WhatsApp are also used. A short time after AHAP had been founded, we also formed a WhatsApp group which initially had eight to ten members. Now the number is more than 75 Breeders use WhatsApp mostly to coordinate on an everyday basis with each other and share their horses and their learnings with the group. However, pictures and information are also uploaded on Facebook, where they also attract new members. There is very little use of YouTube but I am looking into it. Print media, however, are non-existent. A lot of effort was invested, in the course of several years, to educate people via phone calls and face to face meetings.

Savier: Tell us something about your own breeding. How did it start to breed Arabian horses? Saleem: In 2008, after graduating from Engineering College, I started my search for Arabian horses within Pakistan but in vain. I travelled all over the province of Punjab but was unsuccessful in acquiring a WAHOregistered Arabian. I finally started my breeding with the purchase of a WAHO mare that was rejected by the army in 2011.In 2012 I purchased my first Arabians in Germany and imported them to Pakistan in Jan 2013. Since then, I have been importing horses regularly and updating the gene pool that I have. Also, I have been supporting other breeders and newcomers in selecting and purchasing horses and getting them to Pakistan. Founding AHAP was a dream come true for me, as I have been blessed to work in a team of dedicated breeders who have put their all to bring this breed to where it is today.

Savier: This sounds like a long and interesting story cut short. Where is your stud, what is your main profession, and how did you get into breeding? Saleem: Fortunately for me, my stud, Al Saleem Egyptian Arabians, is located near Lahore. Lahore is also the capital of the province of Punjab and the second biggest city of the country. The crops are great and we mostly use home-grown fodder such as alfalfa and oats for our horses. My story is not a usual one and I had never planned to be a breeder or 2nd Annual AHAP Board meeting at Al Makhdoom stud breed horses. SPECIAL of parentage mixed with “desi” horses or Thoroughbreds. After a lot of hard work and wrong purchases, in 2012 I managed to find a purebred WAHO mare named Pretty Bard born in 2003, and a non-WAHO Arab gelding born in 2009. I then planned to breed a foal from my mare, but unfortunately, only her half-brother was available, and one other stallion was. Both owners were not easy to approach but while the owner of the half-brother agreed to the breeding after a series of requests, the other one refused. I did have Pretty Bard travel 400 km to Islamabad to get her covered, but as fate would want it, the mare did not conceive and I did not want to request again. In the same month, I tried to purchase a non-WAHO mare but the owner increased the price unexpectedly seeing that I was desperate, and a deal could not be concluded. These two events forced me to start my search online, to purchase Arabians abroad and breed them here and produce good quality Arabian horses in Pakistan, so that no one would have to suffer like I had. Savier: Why did you decide that your horses would have to be Straight Egyptian Arabians? Saleem: One thing I was sure of, and that was to purchase straight Egyptians, as for me, they were closest to the breed of my prophet (PBUH) and were the best of the Arabians that had been brought to Egypt. The best of the Arabians had been in Egypt from the time of the Prophet Daud (David) and Prophet Suleiman. Later on when Hazray Amr Bin Aas conquered Egypt with a cavalry of Arabian horses, it was a new start, and then the best Arabians were collected there by Al Nacer, Beybers, Muhammad Ali Pasha and Abbas Pasha. My aim has been to produce beautiful Asil Arabian horses, with an excellent character, which would be beautiful and functional and hence could be used for shows, mounted sports, and leisure riding. I purchased two stallions and one filly, which arrived in Pakistan in Jan 2013. The filly was co-owned by Sardar and me, and thus began my journey. Since then, I have

gone through the process of regularly updating my stock by breeding, importing, selling and upgrading. Savier: What is your role in the network of breeders in Pakistan? Saleem: For one thing, both of my stallions played a huge role in the Arabian scene in Pakistan, as I made them available for breeding. People who had one or two mares started to breed their mares, I started purchasing any Arabian mares I could lay my hands on, and visitors started to pour into my stud to see my horses. This is where I started to educate them on the Arabian horse, as many people had never seen Arabians before. I made a Facebook page “Al Saleem Egyptian Arabians” which showed all my mares and their progeny. In the same year, I decided to found the Arabian Horse Association of Pakistan, which has as a criterion that only the owner of a documented pure Arabian can join. I am thankful to God for finding very cooperative members and fellow breeders who are extremely passionate about the breed. I have always helped every breeder who asked for it, even in selection of a stallion to breed, or for horses to import or to buy. I help them buy and sell their horses, and I help them create and fashion a direction for their breeding based on their own ideal Arabian horse dream. Now, since we have a great team of breeders, the older and more experienced ones are helping the newer ones and so this has become a team effort. Even guidance is being shared regarding keeping, feeding, medication and training of horses. Savier: What is your goal in terms of Arabian horse breeding? Saleem: My breeding goal is to produce tall, strong, beautiful Straight Egyptian Arabian horses with a great character that can be used for sports, leisure, or in the show ring. The pedigree of the horse itself should be impeccable. So in short, I aim to produce a functional Arabian horse with great disposition and not just a beautiful show piece.

Right now, I am looking forward to seeing the first SE foals of my beloved stallion GR Assad. I imported the stallion Hanaya Karam this year and I will be using him in 2021. Hanaya Karam for me is dream come true, as he possesses beauty with character along with a good build. However, the functionality part of Karam has yet to be assessed and hence he is currently being trained, after which I can judge him based on his athletic ability. At my stud every horse is trained for riding, so that I can assess their temperament and performance, and keep that in mind along with the elements of type and beauty while selecting them for breeding. I do not keep a lot of horses at my stud. Quality over quantity has always been my belief and I tend to keep just a small number that I can easily manage as my passion and hobby. Moreover, I believe in spreading the breed as much as possible and not hoarding it, and this has been the reason why we have grown so quickly as a community in so short a time. Currently I have two stallions, which are GR Assad and Hanaya Karam; four pregnant mares which are DF Kaisha, Shakyra Star, DF Nafisa and DAA Minerva; and one filly, who is Mabrooka Al Zaman.

Savier: How do you see 2021 for breeding in Pakistan? Saleem: 2021 will be a great year for Arabians in Pakistan, with numerous horses imported into the country. Personally, in my function as President of AHAP, 2021 will be a challenging year. First off, I will be finishing writing a book about the Arabian in Pakistan and get it published. The book will serve to educate people regarding the history of this amazing horse that is not only beautiful but also has great character and most versatile functionality. It is the Arabian horse that was responsible for the spread of Islam, having been ridden by our Prophet (P.B.U.H) and the great warriors of Islam. Moreover, it is the same breed regarding which there are numerous sayings of our Prophet (P.B.U.H). Keeping an Arabian horse particularly for the purpose of its functionality is part and parcel of our Faith. The book also contains chapters on breeding and keeping the Arabian horse in Pakistan as well as the various stud farms, and pedigrees of all AHAP horses. Secondly, I plan to work with MONA and WAHO to get the new stud book printed and to get a procedure set up and implemented so that in Pakistan passports,

AL AYAAT ARABIANS Faizan Shahzada had been keeping Thoroughbred and Desi mixed horses for many years in his stud located in Karachi, which is the biggest city of Pakistan and also the capital of the Sindh province. In 2016, he founded Al Ayaat Arabians and Faizan with Qaysar Al Jood named it after of his daughter. However, he then acquired a purebred mare which he named Ayaat (GR Dalman x Adina Al Ghazi). More recently they moved to a newly built stud and Faizan has imported some wonderful Arabians: the show performance SE stallion Qaysar Al Jood (Alixir x Raphsody in Black); a mare called DAA Miasma (F Shamaal x Hanaya Mira); and another stallion, DAA Tadjir (Frasera Mashar x Tadjira). In addition, Faizan serves AHAP as warden of Sindh, guiding and supporting new members from his province.

affiliation with Arab horses it Irtaza Dawood with GR Imad has always been my dream to keep them. The dream to own a straight Egyptian materialized when I acquired the filly Aidah Al Saleem. This year, I imported the black stallion GR Imad and I aim to breed beautiful functional black straight Egyptian Arabians. Moreover, I am working passionately to promote the breed in Pakistan and share and acquire as much knowledge as we can from breeders around the world, and pass it on to our fellow horse enthusiasts to show them that Arabian horses are the most loving, loyal, intelligent and versatile breed in the world.” He currently owns two SE mares, Aidah Al Saleem (DF Siraj x DF Delila) and GR Mareefa (GR Moneef x Maria Halima), and a Straight Egyptian stallion, GR IMAD (GR Nashad x Shaylah Bint Iman).

GHAZI ARABIANS Ghazi Arabians is located 50 km south of the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, in the picturesque district of Chakwal. Being in the north of Punjab, the weather there is mostly pleasant. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar was one of the first civilians to import Arabian horses into Pakistan. His contribution for the breed in Pakistan has been immense as not only has he supported AHAP, as its Vice President, but also printed the last stud book for MONA in 2013. He is the biggest Arabian horse owner in Pakistan and has a collection of over 35 Straight Egyptians and Purebred Arabian Horses.

Despite his tough routine and a hectic schedule as a Politician and Senator, he manages to find time for his horses and his stud.

“My love for horses started early but faded away in the course of time as I grew up, only for me to discover it again. In 2007, when I decided to buy a few horses for my farm, my first choice of breed was the most treasured and noble one, the Arabian. Considered by the desert Bedouins a priceless possession and cherished for its beauty, loyalty, and stamina. At the time, the only Arabian horse breeding in Pakistan was at the state stud, Remount Depot, from which acquiring horses was a difficult task. To start our breeding program, all of our Arabian horses were imported from overseas. As we expect to grow in the course of time, our goal is to

Mustafa Nawaz (Centre) with his guests at Ghazi Arabians

breed quality Arabian horses proving themselves not only in the show ring, but also under the saddle. “

His Purebred Stallion, AJA Valentino (Vervaldee x AJA Beneja) - one of his first imports - was also used by the state stud, Mona. His SE Stallion, Loubajj Ibn Loubna (Ansata Selman x Loubna) has been used by various breeders.

ISLAMABAD ARABIANS Islamabad Arabians was founded in 2019 in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Islamabad Arabians is a beautiful stud surrounded by the Margalla Hills, which gives it a fine view. The weather is pleasant throughout the year. Ahmed Ibrahim, owner of Islamabad Arabians, is a wellknown Real Estate Developer of the capital and a lover of Arabian horses who has recently imported Purebred and SE horses into his stud. His main interest is to breed show quality Arabians (both Straight Egyptians and Purebred Arabians) in Pakistan. His recent addition has horses of various bloodlines such as RFI Farid, Star of Excalibur EA, Wadee Al Shaqab, Alexander PC and Frasera Dubai. He is working as General Secretary Media and Promotion at AHAP and is very active on social media, spreading the word of Arabians.

Ahmed Ibrahim with Iphar Al Zubi

“Although I have imported Arab horses just a short time back, my love for them has always been there. AHAP opened the avenue and we were able to import these beautiful horses from one of the world’s finest

bloodlines. As Arab horses are a great part of our Islamic history we love them passionately and care for them as our own family. All our horses are housed in a temperature-controlled environment and also get to enjoy the beauty of nature every day in the paddocks allotted to them. Our horses are ridden regularly and have a special bond with us, particularly with my son Raid Ahmed who is a keen rider and Arab horse lover, and plans to participate in national equine events, with his SE Stallion GR Dalman (Authentic Dahman x Dalima Shah), that AHAP is planning to conduct in the coming year. God willing, we plan to breed beautiful show horses that can one day compete in international events.

Ahmed Ibrahim currently owns 10 imported Arabians and their progeny, so in total he has 3 purebred mares, 1 SE mare, 2 purebred fillies, 2 purebred colts, 1 purebred Stallion and 1 SE stallion. Ahmed Hassan, the younger brother of Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim and inspired by him, has also developed a keen interest in Arabians and is

now planning to import more Straight Egyptians to Pakistan and add them to the Islamabad Arabians Family.

LAKHANI ARABIANS Lakhani Arabians is a recent, much-needed addition in Karachi. The owner, Irfan Lakhani, founded this stud in 2020 with the imported SE mare Salaa Nadira (El Salaam x Kab Shah Naala). He has now imported two more SE Arabians – the mare Maaroufah Al Maya (Al Ayal AA x Zandai Jiradah) and the stallion Phaaros Al Masri (Kais Al Baydaa x Flaxmans Pride).

“The Arabian horse had always been a lifelong dream horse of mine due to its very recognizable features, such as the high tail carriage and the dished face, but in my eyes what I admire most about the Arabian is his movement. The floating trot is something that’s very aesthetically beautiful and very unusual as compared to other breeds of horses. As I researched more about Arabians, especially straight Egyptians, I fell more in love with the history they possess. My breeding philosophy is to breed to get straight Egyptians Arabians with ideal features and to bring more refinement by using a vast choice of great pedigree stallions of both classic and modern lines we have now in Pakistan, to produce show quality Straight Egyptian Arabians who can compete on an international level.”

Irfan in Lakhani Stables

The total number of horses at the stud is currently 3, but they are expecting a foal from their mare by the stallion GR Dalman.

SHEIKH ARABIANS Arif Gulzar is the owner of Sheikh Arabians which is located in Jhang in the province of Punjab. Two Districts in Punjab, namely Sargodha and Jhang, have a very old equine culture. And to this day, one finds horsebreeding and horsemen in almost every village.

“My passion with horses dates back to childhood days. I have been owning and breeding mixed breeds, Desis, and English Thoroughbreds for a long time. However, my first interaction with the Arabian horse was as late as in 2001, at the Army Depot at Mona, where I had gone to purchase some Polo ponies for my son, a Polo player. It was love at first sight. And from that day onwards, I started on an endeavor to procure and breed

only Arabians. But sadly, I was unable to get Arabians from the Army Depot and ultimately decided, in 2012, to import three Arabians from the UK, which arrived in 2013. Currently I have an SE Stallion, Aamir el Dine (Qamar el Dine x DHS Halima bint Hawwa) and two purebred mares, Bint Montheeqa (Monther Al Nasser x Misteeqa) and Ameerah Al Justice (Al Justice x HS Mimosa). And have been blessed with three colts by Bint Montheeqa and a colt and filly by Ameerah Al Justice, which have been acquired by other studs. I recently acquired a beautiful SE filly, Lamya Al Saleem (Loubajj bin Loubna x GR Mareefa). This was done to add variety as well as a long-term breeding program. Hopefully further additions/acquisitions will

be made. Last but not the least, the best part of the current Arabian horse breeding scene in Pakistan is the tremendous surge in the number of Arabian horse breeders. Best bloodlines have been imported, and equally important is the fact that the breeders have gotten organized under AHAP and hopefully, in cooperation with Mona, will make it easier to buy and sell, register and ensure pedigrees.” Arif is a long-time WAHO member and always shares whatever is sent by WAHO with the whole group. He is a fatherly figure in the AHAP group and is always there for guidance and advice to everyone. He proudly serves AHAP in the role of the treasurer.

TM FARM Established in 2017, within Lahore, is located the Stud farm of Nasir Malik. He has a passion for horses and has collected all horse breeds like the Andalusian, Friesian, Thoroughbred and the Desi (Local) horse in addition to his Arabian horses.

“Horses at our farm are provided with best of care and attention and most importantly love. Although founded in 2017, the passion for horses began years ago , with a childhood dream to one day establish a stud farm. The acquisition of Ul Alonso from Denmark, as a young colt, and transported to Pakistan was the catalyst in achieving that dream. He is now our breading stallion and has a lot of potential to improve breeding in Pakistan. Our vision and ideology of the Arabian horse that they aim to produce is first a respectable confirmation, a beautiful head, straight legs and a graceful, correct movement with an overall elegant appearance. The true goal is to produce not only a show horse, but a horse that is a true all-rounder. Allah created the Arabian horse from the south wind and exclaimed, ‘I create you, Oh Arabian’.” Recently Nasir took over the role for coordinating

ZAMAN STUD Located within the biggest housing society of Wah, “New City”, lies beautiful Zaman Stud. It is nearly an hour’s drive away from the capital Islamabad towards the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Saad Zaman founded this stud in 2016 when he imported many breeds of horses such as Andalusians, Friesians, and Arabians and added them to his existing stock of thoroughbred racehorses. However, his passion has always been for the Arabian and that has clearly shown in the quality of his imports.

He imported quality SE show horses that have a good record in shows. Among them, the most notable ones are: Zain SM (Nader Al Jamal x Iman Al Kamar), Duaig Ibn Alixir (Alixir x Bint Bint Farsa), and Princess KS (Al Hadiyyah AA x Malikah Belle HGCA) currently in foal to RFI Farid. Other top horses include Saqallah Al Zaman (Shamekh Al Danat x Whanima ATG), Omneyah KS (Al Saeedi x OEJ Mona Liza), and Majd KS (Al Saeedi x Izara Blue CA).

“Horses have been my passion and I have always admired their beauty. My stud has various breeds of horses, but my focus is always on the Arabian horse. I have always preferred to go for quality and not quantity. For me, it is much better to buy one horse of top quality than to buy 5 of average quality. Breeding is a serious business and you cannot compromise on the quality of the foundation stock of your stud. I

Kalba The 2nd Sharjah

Arabian Horse Festival

SHOWS AND EVENTS by Fabo Brianzoni z photos by Alessio Azzali, SERC

It is with a hint of pride that after almost a year in forced quarantine from shows, including the ones in the Middle East, we were invited by the “SERC” Sharjah Equestrian & Racing Club to attend the Sharjah Kalba Arabian Horse Festival. After an unusual and almost deserted flight to Dubai we were transferred by luxurious cars to Kalba. Kalba is in fact a city in the Emirate of Sharjah, it is located on the coast of the Gulf of Oman to the north, about 90 km from Dubai. This year a five-day national holiday celebrates the 49th anniversary of the city, which however has very ancient origins. The city of Kalba was conquered by the Portuguese Empire in the 16th century and was part of a series of fortified cities overlooking the important Persian Gulf. It was attacked by the Sultan of Muscat in 1811 during the campaign of Oman against the maritime forces of AlQasimi. It was a protected state of the British government until 1952 and then in 1971 after numerous clashes with nearby Fujairah it was officially recognized by the Sultanate of Sharjah. Still today the Emirate of Sharjah is governed

by the Al Qasimi Family, to whom we are grateful and owe thanks for the hospitality to this fantastic show right by the sea. We also thank all the technical staff, in particular Mr. Sultan Mohammed Khalifa Al Yahyaie, Mr. Ashraf Gaber El Laithy and Mr. Mohammed Al Nabulsi for taking care of us all, journalists and media. The event took place in 4 days and unlike many morphology shows, this one was entirely dedicated to male and female horses up to 3 years of age. “SERC” is an association with hundreds of members, it is a security in terms of events, which until now has only reaped successes. HH SHK Abdullah Bin Majid Al Qasimi is the Chairman and Dr. Ghanim Mohammed Obaid Al Hajri is His deputy. Judges invited to judge this event were: Mr. Rauf Abbas (Egypt), Mr Gianmarco Aragno (Italy), Mr. Josy Everars (Belgium), Ms. Irina Stigler (Russia) and Ms. Pilar Cavero Capi (Spain). Ring Master was Dr. Abdelwahab Ben Ali Amira.

Awash) O and B Sheik Abdullah Bin Majid Al Qassemi Section B:“J GERGESHAN” (Fuerte x Shalwa Alkhail) O. Al Bairag Arabian Horse Stud. Before the final championship I would like to say a few words about the security that the organization “SERC” has guaranteed to all guests present. This year we will never forget, it was a year where in addition to our health has been undermined even our nervous and psychological system. Fear of proximity, hugs and handshakes have been abolished, fear of entering a restaurant or a store. For many months we were not able to move from our homes, regions and locations. We at TuttoArabi decided to participate in this festival because we have known for years the staff and the organization that hosted us. For this reason I want to give my best compliments on how the Covid situation was handled at the festival. Each of us had a private car to avoid promiscuity even inside the car. We chose a hotel that was able to guarantee daily sanitation both in the restaurants and in the rooms. Since my

landing in Dubai, the watchword of all the people who have followed us during our stay has been “Safety”. At the end of the event, every European guest has been swabbed to ensure a safe return home. But back to the championship, the top three of each class were called to compete for the three Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, almost unanimously awarded. The Gold medal yearling filly was “AL ARYAM ALDHANNA” Silver “RAK ONOOD” - Bronze “D SAMAHAH” Gold for the 2 years old filly “EKS JASMINAH” Silver “SQ AL JAOUHRA” Bronze “ARYAM AL REMAS” For the 3 years old fillies: Gold ”D FANNANAH” Silver “D MODI” Bronze “THORYA AL HAWAJER” Let’s move on to the 1 year old male championship, Yearlings colt: Gold “D SHARAR” Silver “DURYAB AL HAWAJER” Bronze “AL ARYAM HASHEEM” Age 2 years old: Gold “AL ARYAM JAMER” Silver “TAHAN GHALEB” Bronze “AJ SABI” Last championship for the three-year old colts, which is a very important one as already starting from the next season they will be the top stallion for the next breeding season of their owners and breeders who will choose them as sires. Gold “J GERGESHAN” Silver “SG SARI” Bronze “E.S. ZEIN” Leaving you with the photos by our photographer Mr Alessio Azzali I invite everyone to visit the Instagram page of Tutto Arabi: tuttoarabi_magazine, where you will find pictures of the show provided by our friend and photographer Mr Muamhed from SERC.

I have been asking the women of the Arabian horse to express their message to the girls and young women who are entering the world today with the aim of encouraging them to take their own path and pursue their dream, whatever it may be. Intimate portraits of strong women determined to achieve their goals and happy to share their experiences, passion, enthusiasm, foresight, emotion and the desire to tell their stories have been emerging from the interviews. These generous women and their stories represent the soil on which tomorrow will sprout the lives and stories of our daughters, our granddaughters and our future. It is important to mark a path now, to try to draw a map of thoughts and words of the women of today that will help the women of tomorrow to find their way in the world. This project is dedicated to Blanca, my daughter, and to all the women who write, thanks to their tenacity, the history of this world every day.

SPECIAL

I’m Sunny, my nickname in art and life. My family name is Sassudelli, my unusual name is Sunita because I was born in India and I was adopted from an italian family when I was very young. Since my early childhood I had only one huge passion: horses!! I drew horses, talked about horses and, as soon as I had a chance, I learned to ride. I also dedicated my master’s degree thesis in photography to the horse world, creating a photographic project between horses and architecture. After completing my studies, I began to shoot show jumping ... but I ended up in the world of the Arabian horse. All happened by pure chance, a stud manager asked me if I could be able to shoot Arabians in a stud... and from there my adventure in this beautiful world began! I consider myself very lucky to be able to combine study and passion ... photography and Arabian horses. And I realize that every day I learn something new about these wonderful desert horses and I feel more confortable to immortalize them. Share great time with them closely gives great emotions and satisfactions and that is a great honor for me! Nowadays even for a woman it is quite easy to undertake an artistic path, in my case as a photographer, without many obstacles, something for gender equality still remains to be done, but in any case I feel in the Arabian industry there are not different opportunities related to gender. In fact my brief but intense experience means that a photographer has the opportunity to get involved at an international level. It is certainly not easy, but from what I have been able to see there are several photographers who have a family which can enjoy working all over the world and this has

given me the strength to continue this path. Being a woman it’s easy to have misunderstandings ... and meet some people who wish to carry you forward in your career very fast, but I prefer to continue my way, perhaps slowly and without shortcuts, but in the end I can be proud of myself, and build my own way with commitment and passion, at least as far as I’m concerned! Luckly for me, I met many positive people, who helped me to realize my dream, which is to get a job related to my passion. Expecially as a beginner I not only had encouragement, but also people who discouraged me and did not give me the opportunity to get involved but despite everything here I am, with perseverance, passion and desire to be a photographer to continue my journey. This year because of Covid circumstances my expectations have not been fullfilled, indeed many times this discouraged me, but I realized that in the most difficult moments you have to understand how lucky you are to be able to do what you love. To continue this work I have to improve my personal research on technique and photographic poses. I always have a positive attitude and keep comparing with some famous photographers and shots, in order to broaden knowledge and be able to propose something unique, because to create a picture is a personal way of seeing using both my sensitivity and mastery of my photography studies. Another thing that may seem commonplace is that being spontaneous and humble helped me a lot. It also helps to be friendly with everyone, as well as smiling ... yes people like to see happy faces! it sounds something simple but it’s not!

I would like that my experience could help anyone who loves Arabian horses and has a talent for photography to follow it, I’m sure they won’t regret it!

Breeder and Architect

SPECIAL

My name is Chiara Carrer, I was born in the province of Venice; now I live in Refrontolo in the province of Treviso, in the hills known for the production of Prosecco wine. I am an architect by profession. I discovered the Arabian horse about fifteen years ago thanks to my husband, Vincenzo Pellegrini, current President of the ANICA Association. My husband had already been passionate about Arabian horses for many years and right then he was deciding to start his own small breeding farm: so we lived this adventure together and I became passionate about this magnificent creature, beautiful, full of charm and history. I think that being a woman does not bring with it a different way of approaching the world of the Arabian horse. As far as I’m concerned, I can say that my relationship with horses has always been characterized by the love I have for animals in general, rather than by aesthetic attraction or genetic quality, aspects that have helped to consolidate my passion and that are at the basis of my breeding choices: my husband always says that if it were up to me, we wouldn’t sell any horses, especially the less beautiful or lucky ones, for which I have always nurtured a form of protection. Whether or not this is the result of a sensitivity that is more feminine than masculine, I don’t know - maybe not - but it is certainly the way I live my personal passion for the Arabian horse and I hope that it transmits something positive to the people with whom I deal. I had the good fortune to be supported by the greater experience and knowledge of my

husband, but I think quietly to have matured over the years a good aesthetic sensitivity that allows me to give my contribution, even technical, to the breeding choices of our breeding, Assa Egyptian Arabians, of which I am administrator. I felt well received by breeders who are also my friends and with some of them - among which I would like to mention our dear and unforgettable friend Federico Fogarin of Guasimo breeding farm, who unfortunately is no longer with us - I have built a true relationship of friendship and mutual esteem. With reference to the world of Arabian horses and to a breeding project, in my view breeding is a long-term challenge, one must not be in a hurry and one must have the ambition to pursue one’s own personal project, accepting possible failures and trying to make them temporary. So there can be no breeding project without passion and perseverance: unfortunately it is an adventure that requires economic resources and therefore everyone must find their own dimension to live their passion to the fullest. I hope that my experience and my story can be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world. It’s a passion that has many aspects common to the female world: care, custody, aesthetics, sensitivity. Many times these aspects are underestimated, but they are the keys to being a good breeder and to fully live your passion as much as technical, genetic and historical knowledge. I hope that my simple, empathetic and relational approach, in the essencial direction of care and respect for the animal, will be perceived as a breeding value and maybe some young woman who wants to undertake this adventure will like it.

My message to future generations of young women to encourage them to take their own path, whatever it may be, is:

Breeder and Stud Manager

SPECIAL

My name is Antonia Bautista, born in Mallorca, Spain. I’m a breeder, continuing the family tradition since 1991. We breed mainly Arabian Horses but also some Andalusians for show and dressage. I’m also the manager of Al Shiraa Arabians (UAE) since 2011 and I’m a judge as well, currently in the National list.

I see myself as an individual, that I know what I want, where I want to go and I try my best to get it. And I have to say that I never felt disrespected or belittled by anyone in the industry, at least in what I do. And I do the same, I value people for their human qualities, for their talent, for their hard work... never for their gender.

I was introduced to the Arabian Horse World by my father, when he bought me my very first horse at the age of 4. By coincidence, this horse was an Arabian mare called Parrandera. She was huge, fleabitten with the most beautiful spanish eyes. She was bred by Navarro Rincón. We all fell in love with her sweet character, how expressive and curious she was... We soon realized Arabians were different than other horses and my father started to investigate about the breed. One year after, we would go together to Yeguada Militar (State Stud in Spain) and we would come back with 3 mares and one stallion. And since then we never stopped breeding Arabian Horses.

I never had difficulties or obstacles to do my job for being a woman. I had difficulties as everyone else... a deal that didn’t go through due to lack of honesty, losing some titles that were important at a certain point, some strong different points of views when judging, some regrettable breeding decisions... but none of them related to my gender. On the contrary, I had help from colleagues, both men and women, that selflessly pushed me on the right way at the beginning. Lots of patience, dedication, creativity, passion, determination and resilience... and all this done with integrity. These are the qualities or characteristics I think one must have in order to pursue a dream or to undertake a project she/he cares about.

I never asked myself what it means to me to be a woman in the Arabian horse world. I was born in a family where they never made differences between men and women. So for me the fact of being a woman was not better or worse than being a man in any field. Maybe it’s not the kind of answer that everyone expects in these days of radical feminism, as I never felt I had more difficulties or more help because of being a woman. This question was out of the table in the kind of education I received.

I never ask myself if my experience and history could be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world. Maybe my daughter will be able to answer in the future! What I know is that I wake up everyday and try my very best in every field I touch. If I can leave this world better than I found it, I will do whatever it takes.

Breeder and Official Artificial Inseminator

200 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

SPECIAL My name is Jennifer Dhombre, very soon 32 years old, breeding, caring, educating horses for 17 years, and official Artificial Inseminator. I was born as a horse addict. Even if nobody was in this industry around me, I discovered arabians throughout its legends at 7 years old and knew I wanted to be a breeder. My family members have been my greatest supporters since ever and they helped me to buy my first Arabian when I was still a teenager. I made international trade studies but decided to accomplish my dream about Arabian horses so I abandoned the silver spoon in my mouth and definitely put my feet into mud.. For me the secret of happiness in not about a luxury way of life but between the ears of an Arabian horse, despite all the work it needs days and nights: this is definitely My luxury way of life. Being a woman in the Arabian horse world is not easy. I must say that I don’t know if men or women are the most critical. First physically, I am blond fair hair, I started very young and people were immediately judging me because of my appearance. If I was not dressing perfectly, that was maybe because I did not belong to an elite class of people so no need to talk to me (how stupid?), if I was dressing too much probably I was just one more stupid kind of pretty girl and definitely not a horse woman ready to put her feet in mud (no comment). Still for many people, I am a woman breeding some great horses but probably for glory not for love or passion (False. I am crazy animal lover, rescuing horses, cats and dogs for years and rejecting some ill treating practices of our own industry..). I can also be frightening because everyone understands quickly that I cannot be corrupted, and that I do work for the breed only and for my animals. I am typically the kind of person who does not correspond to her image so that is terrifying me, the way how people think they know you just at first sight and specially when you are a (young) woman. I was asked in this interview if I have found any difficulties or obstacles in proposing myself in this world. My answer is: indeed yes. Being a young woman, not that ugly, and coming from a family with good way of livings, makes you immediately identified as a not interesting person except for the

profits and benefits people think they can get through you (before realizing you are intelligent, oops you are ruining their plans). People easily judge you and think that if you look pretty and maybe got money so you have no values, no idea about hard work, and so working into an industry where a majority of powerful people are men, is like being a cheep into a wolf pack willing to eat you. Men are first trying to get you because you look good, and of course you refuse but must not offending them. And you must prove much more than any men your own values, strength, intelligence, spirit, knowledges... This always makes me smile. Most of the people are still quite shocked when they see me doing vet stuffs, inseminations, collections, births assistance, working days and nights without sleeping or when they hear me speak about genetics, farm, business and management strategies, marketing, horsemanship, because I am “just one blond woman walking on high heels during the shows” so this should not be my stuffs. Some dared to say me they think that a pretty woman is most of the time a frivolous woman. But woman have as much skills as men specially with horses, and this is high time for this world to get to know and accept it. Personally, all that I did, I did it with my head and heart and I feel proud about the fact that never ever no badly intentioned men (or woman) could compromise or corrupt me. My valor and my virtues are my self respect. And I know I am not the only woman / person to respect herself. No pretention but I hope my experience and history can be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world, not only as a woman, but as a human being. What matters is who you really wanna be. I choose to stay honest and true, but I don’t give the chance to everyone to get to know me for who I really am, only to some priviledge people who share the same kind of humanity and valors than I do. We must admit that our Arabian horse industry is now endangered by too much money, politics, and schemes and unfortunately this is not only because of men. I don’t find my place into all that except my passion. I believe that we can all together change our industry, change this world, before this is too late. We owe it to the Arabian Horse.

I am nobody but a true worker, a true passionate, a true animal lover, a true woman and

According to Honoré de Balzac, a famous nineteenth century French novelist, “the three most beautiful sights in the world are a ship in full sail, a galloping horse, and a woman dancing”. I must admit that I have never been a great fan of sailing. I love to dance but whether it is a beautiful sight is not for me to judge. However, I cannot help but agree with Balzac on what he said about the beauty of a horse, especially when the horse in question is a purebred Arabian, exhibiting its unique traits that make it so distinct from any other horse breed in the world. There is something very special about Arabian horses that no words can describe. To me, they are the most amazing creatures on earth, capable of touching my soul with as little as one look of their huge hypnotizing eyes. Sometimes, I think that I am fascinated with Arabians because they represent all the attributes that I strive to embody myself: confidence, class and charisma. My name is Kamila Kozlowska, I come from Poland but I currently live in Chichester, a charming city in South-East England, and it is not too far from the truth when I say that Arabian horses are the greatest love of my life. For the past few months, as a journalist and part of the Alim Editrice team, I have been on the most amazing journey of my life; the journey to make my dreams come true. It is a great honour and pleasure for me to be involved in the project regarding women in the Arabian horse industry. Luckily, I have never experienced gender discrimination myself but I have heard many stories about women who were denied equal opportunities at work. That is why, I strongly believe that this serious problem should be widely discussed and dealt with appropriately. I am very grateful to Giorgia Mauri, the originator and leader of this project, for the unique opportunity to share the most personal piece of writing that I have created so far: my own story and what it means to me to be a woman in a man’s world. I once read that passion for horses is usually inherited by every second generation and it is not something you can acquire or learn; you need to be born with it. My grandfather was a great horseman, which could explain why I was born with the love and passion for horses. I cannot remember the time in my life when these amazing animals were not occupying my thoughts and dreams. My first memory associated with Arabians was an old photograph by Zofia Raczkowska, hanging on the

wall in my grandfather’s room. I was five years old when I first noticed the beauty and noble presence of the stallion captured in the photo. He was distinctly different from any other horses I had seen. At that time, Poland was still under the Communist regime and, with only few private breeders in the country, Arabians were very thin on the ground. No wonder that the image of the gorgeous grey horse had been imprinted on my memory long before I had the opportunity to see a real Arabian. Years later, when I was cleaning my grandfather’s room shortly after his death, I removed the pale and weathered photo from the frame to find out that it represented the famous Polish stallion Bandos (Negatiw x Bandola), born in 1964 at the Janow Podlaski State Stud. Since then, I had dreamt about visiting the world-renowned Polish studs. Soon after, I became an Arabian horse aficionado, collecting books and magazines about the breed. Yet it never crossed my mind that one day I would become a journalist myself. In 2005, I started attending the championships and breeding parades in Poland and abroad. I will never forget a very special presentation featuring some of the most recognised Polish beauties that belonged to the meritorious family of Milordka, better known as the world-famous Michalow ‘E-line’. The presentation was accompanied by a poignant commentary by the late Izabella Pawelec-Zawadzka, who was often referred to as the First Lady of Polish Arabian horse breeding. She possessed that special talent of telling the history of the Polish Arabians in such a way that could melt even the coldest of hearts. I was glad it was dark and no one could see the tears running down my face. I was deeply touched by the story of great horsemen who were ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of saving the purebred Polish horse. Also, from that day on, the magnificent Michalow-bred Arabians have become very close to my heart. On the whole, everything was going great. In 2010, I became a member of the Polish Arabian Horse Breeders Association and I wrote my first coverage of the championships for one of the Polish equine magazines. Unfortunately, that was my first and last article that was published at that time, not because my work was poor and rejected by the publishers, but because all my inner demons were awakened and kept telling me that it was just a young girl’s dream and not the way to make a living. Sadly, I did not find the courage to fight these fears and

I eventually lost the battle. After working in a few different industries in Poland, I was still unsure about what I really want to do in my life. With a BA degree in the English language and literature, it made sense to try my luck in the United Kingdom. After moving to South-East England in July 2015, I started a successful career in a business totally unrelated to horses, which seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Again, everything was going well: I was developing fast, I got promoted a few times and I started another degree that was meant to boost my career even more. However, one day I woke up realising that none of these things could make me happy. I was lucky to have the most amazing friend who spent hours encouraging me to change my life and finally made me believe I could do it. First steps are always difficult, especially if you had already tried and, in your own mind, you failed. Nevertheless, in December 2019 I decided to go to Paris for the World Championships to see whether the world of Arabian horses was still my thing. The show brought back all the amazing memories from the past and awoke all the unfulfilled desires, but I had no idea what to do or whom to approach. On my way back from Paris, I was thinking about the next move but soon, the situation got complicated again. The world-wide pandemics shut the world down at the beginning of 2020. Just before the first lockdown in the UK, I was planning to attend the annual stallion parade at Jadem Arabians. Before my trip to Belgium, I wrote an email to Christine Jamar, a world-renowned breeder and the woman I have always admired, asking for a private conversation after the event. The parade was held on 8th March, the International Women’s Day. It seemed like perfect timing to start a series of interviews with successful women of the Arabian horse industry. Also, I knew very well that Polish Arabians had always been close to Christine’s heart so I was thrilled to hear that she would be more than happy to meet me. The initial idea was to do an interview and then to start my own blog. However, on my way back from Belgium, I decided that I would try to get the interview published in a magazine. I was enormously excited when I received an email from Simone Leo, saying that he found some space for my article in the upcoming issue of Tutto Arabi. From then on, our cooperation has developed in a direction that I

204 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

could not have dreamt of on my way from Paris in December 2019. Simone has continually shown appreciation for my work and has supported me in achieving my goals: my first article published in Tutto Arabi, my first piece of work for the ‘Arabian Stallions of the World’, my first cover story for Desert Heritage Magazine. Apart from journalism, I have been involved in other exciting projects and I look forward to what the future has in store. So far, my journey has been full of pleasant surprises! In August 2020, my story came full circle and, after a few long years of not attending the Polish Nationals, I finally went back to Janow Podlaski. There, I reunited with my old friend, Sylwia Ilenda, a very talented artist and photographer. I first met Sylwia almost 16 years ago, right at the beginning of my journey. Our reunion resulted in the above photo of myself with one of the priceless pearls of the Michalow Stud - the enchanting Emandorissa (Abha Qatar x Emanda). In this photo, Sylwia perfectly captured not only the ethereal beauty of the mare, but also the happiest version of myself, which is when I am surrounded by horses. At the same show, I was lucky to meet another amazing woman of the industry who, for 47 years, was responsible for the breeding programme of the Michalow Stud and bred some of the world’s finest representatives of the Arabian breed, including the exotic Emandorissa. I am more than sure that Urszula Bialobok needs no further introduction. Our meeting will hopefully result in a fruitful collaboration and another of my greatest dreams will become reality. But shush! I will say no more as I do not want to jinx it. No doubt that the Arabian horse industry is male dominated, in fact, the whole world is! Are women still treated differently to men? Personally, I have never experienced a situation where a man would show lack of respect or any signs of contempt towards me. Actually, it has been quite the opposite; my feminine energy seems to help in effective communication and building long-lasting relationships and I hope it will continue to do so in the future. Regrettably, I have heard so many stories of women who were less fortunate than myself. Therefore, it is crucial that the issues related to sexism and gender discrimination are not swept under the rug but treated seriously and addressed accordingly.

SHOWS AND EVENTS

Is it more difficult for a woman to become successful in this world? I think it very much depends on the individual characteristics of a person. In my opinion, if you are ready to work through your fears of not being good enough and to follow your heart in pursuit of your own dreams, your gender does not really matter and you can become successful in any industry. Your passion, determination, hard work and engagement will bring a desired outcome sooner or later. At the end of the day, the Arabian horse industry is full of accomplished women: world-renowned breeders, experts, judges, stud managers, photographers and journalists.

What is my advice to young women that would like to become successful? Be yourself, be strong minded and clearly communicate your boundaries but, at the same time, be kind and treat people in a way that you would like to be treated yourself. Believe that you can achieve everything you want and have clearly established goals, but also stay open to opportunities that may come your way. Learn to perceive all your failures as chances to grow and learn from, and celebrate all your accomplishments, no matter how small they might seem. Most importantly, bear in mind that you are part of something bigger than your own personal success, and think about how your individual aims could have a positive impact on the future of the breed.

When I spoke with Christine Jamar about her recipe to become successful in the world of Arabian horses, she gave me a priceless advice to never give up. Today, I am ready to add my own bit to it:

Hello, I’m Raffa Anna Maria, a girl like many others who works in the field of Arabian horses; my experience began in the world of Arabian horses in 2006, the year I bought my first Arabian saddle stallion. Previously I had already had other horses but not Arabians. My passion, as for other people, has been in me since I was born, since I was a child in fact I remember being fascinated by these magnificent animals. I remember of my very first experience with an Arabian horse in a riding school I attended as a child. Though I had no experience with horses of this breed and despite my inexperience with horses, especially Arabian ones, I got from that Arabian horse’s glimpse and from the chance to ride him a unique feeling that has stayed with me. Now that I’ve been working in the world of Arabian horses for years, this feeling comes back to me and accompanies me every day. Today it’s amplified by having the opportunity to care of a horse since

its birth. I share my passion with my husband, Diego Zoppellaro, who is a trainer. We run together our training center, Zoppellaro Arabian Training Center, which is not only our work but represents our whole life. Most of the horses that I take care of daily are not my property, but I get attached to each of them and each one will always be in a part of my heart, some more than other. Each one has a reserved part in me. In my life and in my future projects I hope there will always be and I am convinced that there will always be these magnificent and unique animals because the horse PSA is and will always be part of my life. In the future I would like to pass on to my children and to all the people I can the passion I have for this beautiful animal that can give a lot. Passion can push people to struggle as I did to follow my dreams and be able to get to work in this world in which women have a role often considered marginal but in many ways essential.

Stud General Manager - Privilege SFQ

SPECIAL

My name is Jennifer von Dahn, I am 35 years old and I was born in Sweden. I moved to Belgium around 5 years ago to work at Privilege SFQ. I met Raphael Curti at a show in Europe a few years prior to that. I was offered a position as a groom at Privilege and I jumped at the chance to join a group of talented and inspiring people. I have never looked back once, Privilege is my home. I have worked my way up and beginning of this year Raphael promoted me to General Manager. As Privilege has grown and gained success all over the world I am humbled by the big responsibility. It is hard work but immensely rewarding and I considered myself having the best job in the world. The horses are everything to me - they have built me up as a person. They have given me so much. I am lucky to be surrounded by such supportive people as well. Raphael in particular but also our clients who put their trust in us. I come from the world of race horses, trotters to be more specific. I started at a very young age and for many years I went to school during the day and trained horses on the tracks at night. After many years in the business I decided to try something different. But it did not take long for me to realise that it is with horses I belong. I posted an ad on a website in Sweden and Magnus Tingshagen from MT Training Center contacted me. He offered me a position and I worked for them for around 5 years. It was a big leap from racehorses to showhorses and I learned so much from Magnus and his wife Janicke. I fell head over heels with the Arabian Horse and the exciting world dedicated to them. To me being a woman today is not harder than being a man, there is no difference in what I can

do as a woman in comparison to a man. I am lucky to be surrounded by individuals that do not look at me and see gender. I have been judged on my capabilities. Unfortunately that is not always the case for all women. The world is changing and we are heading in the right direction. There are many successful women out there excelling as managers, handlers, trainers, breeders and so on. I believe women are more and more standing up for gender equality and the mindset is different to what it may have been before. I have never found any difficulties or obstacles in proposing myself in the Arabian horse world. I have met few individuals who question my authority based on my gender but those individuals do not bother me. I have proven myself enough to the people that matters and I will keep doing so. No matter in what business you enter you will always be questioned. Your intentions, capability and strength among other things. How you respond and how it affects you will determine if you succeed. Of course it requires some talent and luck as well. Especially in our business. In our line of work you have to have a certain feeling and a heart for the horses. If you don’t you might be successful short term but you will never last. My priority has always been in having pride in my work and love for my horses. Everything else is less important to me. The qualities one must have in order to pursue a dream and to undertake a project in my opinion are strength and passion. The mind is a powerful tool. Your desire to live your dream is what will push you through the hardship. Understand that you can not accomplish your dreams without some hardship, it’s how you grow from it that will determine your success to reach your goal.

I would like to think my experience and history can be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world. My message to encourage them to take their own path, whatever it may be, is:

L E T YO U R PA S S I ON CON S U M E YO U. I F YO U A R E PA S S I ON AT E - YO U A R E U N STOP PA B L E .

Horse Judge, Journalist and Promoter

SPECIAL

My name is Urszula Łeczycka, I come from Poland and I am an Arabian horse judge, journalist and promotor since 23 years now, so for more than a half of my life. From being just a passion of a young girl an Arabian horse became a major part of my professional life even if everyone around told me you can not live from the hobby. I started as volountary at Polish Arabian Horse Breeders Society and I may proudly say that I was a personal assistant to one of the world’s biggest authorities in Arabian horse community – Mrs Izabella Zawadzka since my first steps into this field until her sudden pass away few years ago. For me she was one of the greatest women I ever used to know and a woman that influenced not only an Arabian horse breed worldwide but she also encouraged many of world greatest breeders to start their historical breeding programs. She surely defined my way of looking onto Arabian horse as to the piece of art but also she taught me a lot about the diplomacy, culture and this unique humanity that only a woman can bring into this difficult business world. I started as Animal Science student, travelling for a few following summers to Michałów and Janów Podlaski farms to work as a groom. Now I can be proud to say that I groomed some of the worlds greatest stars of the breed during my student vacations. I did brush and cuddle Kwestura every 6:00 am, I was riding Palas daughter Premia, foaled with number 1000 in the breeding history of Michałów Stud, I was visiting Wilejka, one of the last living El Paso daughters at her pasture daily before she left to her last home at Marsha Parkinson’s in the US... Later I had a chance to spend one summer working at Jadem Arabians and get to know some of its first stars. When I graduated my studies I was the author and creator of Polish most popular website about the breed in our country - Polskiearaby.com (now under a different ownership). Since 2008 I run ArabHorsePromotion.com, the agency recognised in the international community nowadays, that is an author of most of the Arabian horse websites in Poland and many around Europe and overseas. When I was still a student I started to organise and coordinate some first trips of Polish private Arabian horse breeders in post-communism history of our country to the US and I assisted them with importing great horses such as some first Padrons Psyche, Enzo, Da Vinci FM and Marwan Al Shaqab daughters to Poland. I ended up as the first person from Poland and one of the very first from Europe who began a large Arabian horse export to Iran

in post war history. The name of Lord Bey Shah Memorial show that is still in the calendar of Iranian events comes from the name of Polish National Junior Silver Champion Colt that I exported from Poland to that country. I have also been breeding Arabian horses but even if I was satisfied with all of the foals I bred (the fillies are now in Morocco, Israel and France), I decided that breeding for myself its not actually what I want to do. Since I was a child I had a dream to have a farm, with horses of course. When I was ready for it I sold my flat in the centre of Warsaw and with the help of my husband we created TK Arabian Center - Arabian horse training and pension where we keep and breed the horses of our clients from different countries. I realised another dream that is now being run by my husband and give us a place to live and a job to do. Now, since my daughter will be ready to hopefully go and play with other children, staring from 2021 I am ready to take new challenges for myself, I look for new interesting ideas and opportunities that this world may bring to me... I am not saing all above to advertise myself but to show that it was all possible for a young 20-30 years old girl without any horse backgrounds in the family. Except of my grandfather who was born at Jarczowce – the village in current Ukraine where Count Juliusz Dzieduszycki ran one of the very first Polish Arabian studs and imported most of the Polish damlines existing until today from the Middle East to Jarczowce from where they found their place at Janów Podlaski and all around the world. But unfortunately it seems my family had no relation with Count Dzieduszycki’s horses. And with no horses at all. From the moment I stepped into Mrs Izabella Zawadzka office saying that “I would like to learn everything about Arabian horse” until now I have faced so many funny, difficult, happy and sad moments but everything I achieved until today I achieved thanks to my own passion, hard work and patience. Arabian horses are expensive hobby and where it comes to big money thats where big business starts. And like in every business you meet great people – the visionaries but you also have to deal with gameplayers that you would prefer to never meet. Hopefully in all my experience so far there were more people of that first kind. Arabian horse comes from the Middle East and still, being a woman in that part of the world may bring you more difficulties to get through the mens world of breeders than in the other parts of the globe. But the history of great woman breeders shows that with respect to the culture and to the people you can still achieve a lot even if you need to pass more

obstacles than a man at the same point. Hopefully we are fortunate to live in times when brains not the muscles are the power that gives us eaqual chances in this world. Even if some may ask you to not pass the door of their stable as they believe that woman may bring bad luck stepping into the horse stable... Actually, when I was writing down my thoughts for the purpose of this article I realised that I may mention at least the same number if not more names of the great woman – breeders and judges that did or will remain on the cards of Arabian horse history than a men! Of course all I had a chance to learn and achieve wouldn’t be possible without some fantastic people that I have a privilege to call my friends and I would probably never met them without an Arabian horse. The magic of that breed is that it usually gathers the people with sensitive hearts and artistic souls around. In my opinion without those two features you can not be a good breeder or a good judge. Its hard to mention all those I have met during the years but if I may recall a few moments I would never forget there would be hours spent with Mrs Zawadzka or the magical dinner when I was invited by late Director Ignacy Jaworowski and his wife while they were retired and still at Michałów Stud. Having a delicious mushroom soup we spent an evening talking about the present and past of Michałów Stud horses with one of the greatest breeders in the history. An unforgettable moment for a young student I was. Or a chance to judge one of my first shows in Brasil – next to Murillo Kammer and Michael Byatt – two great horsemen, breeders, animal and nature lovers in overall. Two days spent on talks about the horses we judged, listening to their precious comments on each of them and with the great satisfaction that my evaluation was quite

similar to those men whose names are already written in the history of the breed. One of my first probationary judged shows with Dr Nasr Marei and our funny, secret talks about one particular horse legs will stay in my memories for ever... Nowadays I can have a pleasure to say that I can travel around the globe having Arabian horse friends in most of the coutries. Some countries I can call my second homeland thanks to Arabian horses and the people who breed them. One of such countries for me is Morocco. From my first visit there several years ago I made friends with amazing, open minded people and got totally stolen by the history and beauty of this country. I keep coming back to Morocco as often as I can, unfortunately my next trip has been cancelled because of global pandemic but I hope to come back there as soon as it is possible to visit my friends, have wonderful evenings at the old souks or at the lovely farms hidden between Atlas and the Ocean. Thats what you can call a power of passion. Since exactly one year ago the most important achievement and the best goal of my life is my beautiful, smart daughter Emilia. She is now my whole world and I cherish every moment spent with her teaching her how to look onto this world. Its too early yet to find out her future hobbies but whatver it would be I think that mother plays a key role in every child life. As women and often also mothers we are responsible for transmitting our passion into our children so in case they decide to follow our footsteps, we can be the pillars for the Arabian horse community in the future. If my daughter would ever decide to relate her future with Arabian horse, as a profession or just a hobby I would like to teach her that

Arabian horses of

JÓZEF WILKOŃ by Monika Luft z translation by Joanna Krawczyk

“You can immediately see that these are Wilkoń’s things, the movement of the brush, the shape of the stain, the technique of combining the brush with a pen, crayon, pencil...” – that’s what the artist himself said about his characteristic style in Agata Napiórska’s book “Szczęśliwe przypadki Józefa Wilkonia” (“Lucky Fortunes of Józef Wilkoń”, 2018). JÓZEF WILKOŃ, born in 1930, this outstanding Polish painter, sculptor, illustrator, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, currently lives and works in Zalesie Dolne near Warsaw. The main source of inspiration for him are

animals, including horses, also Arabians, which he admires in a unique way. “I like to paint horses the most because they are beautiful, especially the Arabian horse. And a herd of Arabian horses is the pinnacle of beauty”, he confided to the author of the book. Indeed, Wilkoń’s Arabians are unmistakable and have everything that captivates fans of this breed: an arched neck, a raised tail when moving, a small, graceful head with a large, dark eye and dynamic movement rendered with a few strokes of the brush. There is no way to confuse the Wilkoń Arabians with the images of horses that

came from the hands of other painters. Horses were present in his life from his earliest childhood, spent in the village of Bogucice near Wieliczka. “When I was young, I was famous for being put on a horse, the horse would trot, and after a dozen or so meters I felt that I was irreversibly shifting to the right, left and bang, I was falling”, he told polskiearaby.com. Already in elementary school, Józef showed his drawing abilities, although, as he claimed, “Kossak he was not”: “Juliusz Kossak, when he was twelve, made such horse drawings that the old Kossak would not have been ashamed”, he noted in the interview with Napiórska. The passion for the realism of Kossak, Matejko and Wyczółkowski came from Wilkoń’s family traditions. He spent holidays with his grandparents in Łańcut, where there was a real zoo, of course with horses as the main characters. His grandfather, Wilkoń recalled, was Potocki’s coachman. Young Józef got acquainted with field work early. He could harness a horse and drive himself. He also learned to plow on his own, with one horse, and he was only thirteen! Agricultural work, as he admitted, is familiar to him to this day. From Łańcut it was close to Albigowa. This is where Wilkoń came into contact with Arabians. He told polskiearaby.com: “We once went by wagon to Albigowa and an unpleasant accident happened along the way. Our mare, Baśka, got tangled in the harness and reins. She fell. And I, a young boy, had to save her. I managed. But I don’t remember why we were going to Albigowa. However, it was there that I saw Arabians for the first time, including Bandola, which stood out among others. Years later, I saw her in Janów Podlaski, at Andrzej Krzyształowicz’s stud, who showed her to me. She was as great as before. He let all the horses out on the paddock, and as they ran, I understood for the first time what it was all about.” 228 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

An Arabian in trot, an Arabian mare with a foal by her side – this stimulates the imagination of every person sensitive to beauty, let alone an artist. “The animal has consciousness, a sense of beauty, the beauty of movement,” Wilkoń told us. “The joy with which a foal runs is what an adult horse has when moving, and there is also the will to play. What a foal does is the poetry of movement combined with the joy of life. A running Arabian is a theatre, he must feel that he is

beautiful and demonstrates this beauty.” Bandola was deeply remembered by the artist. “She lived a long life and produced foals until late. I became interested in what happened later, I watched the auction successes of her children”, he admitted. What part of Bandola is present in his Arabians? Dashing and at the same time subtle, full of grace? “In today’s works, and I returned to the topic of horses, for a few seconds you can see the movement of the brush, which then curls up. One twist of the brush creates the form of a horse. Then only the head and legs are added. How? With the same brush. I turn it upside down and use the wooden grip. And the legs are formed. The wooden grip of the brush can also be used for drawing. And these legs are not distorted, they are really so delicate and subtle. Already the Greeks put horses with such legs on vases, and it was from them that I took this concept. But in my case they are even more absurd.” He commented his dynamic line in Napiórska’s book: “The movement must be precise like a surgeon’s. For a long time I have been captivated by works of a decisive form, resulting from dynamic hand movements.” Horses appeared in Wilkoń’s illustrations to the epic Polish poem “Pan Tadeusz” (1834)* by Adam Mickiewicz. In 1962, a contest was

announced, in which many outstanding artists took part, including Zamecznik, Młodożeniec, Tomaszewski. Wilkoń won. “My «Pan Tadeusz» was quite shocking for those times”, he recalled in the book, “it consisted of watering-down the landscape, painting ephemeral, impressionistic and poetic scenes”. He told us that after winning the contest, in an interview with Adam Mauersberger, the then director of the Adam Mickiewicz Museum, he raised the subject of horses. “I asked if he didn’t mind that my horses have legs like spiders, something between an insect and a horse. He acknowledged, that that’s just the way it is.” Arabian or oriental horses also appeared on the covers of Wilkoń’s children books: “Beowulf ” (1966) and Natalia Gałczyńska’s “Iv and Finetta” (1962). The latter is one of the illustrations the artist is most pleased with. “The Arabian has an extremely compact, strong body and these unique limbs,” he emphasized. Oriental horses are also a theme from “Ali Baba’s Treasure” (2014). Nowadays, we have had a chance to come across Arabians from Wilkoń in public space – an open-air exhibition of his works was presented in the summer of 2015 at the market square in Piaseczno. Between July and September 2020, Wilkoń’s illustrations and sculptures were exhibited at the City Museum in Tychy – this is the latest of numerous presentations of the artist’s output. q From the cycle: Horses, by Józef Wilkoń www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 231

SHOWS AND EVENTS

SHOWS AND EVENTS Included in the most important event for purebred Arabian horses under saddle is the qualification for the finals of European Championships Sports Arabians. The Mastes Championships! The level M is the high level and as always it has a range from medium to difficult. The “Masters” Championships is somehow in the middle of difficulty. The ten best horses are qualified in each discipline for the finals of European Championships! In the past this „Masters Championships“ where named „ International Austrian Championships“ and was open for all participant. This year about Corona virus the Austrian Equestrian Federation decided no Austrian Championships at all are allowed. But we could organize the International event. Therefore we created with the allowance of AEF the new name of Championship for qualification. Riders accepted it and agreed. One of the most successful riders of the last years was also in this qualification on top: Three different disciplines she could win!! Dressage, Classic & Hunter Pleasure. From Germany this rider & horse arrived, with a lot of pressure on them because they have to defend their titles! Susanne Hoyler & Haifi el Sorrento a very well trained and showed gelding. Haifi is owned by the Lipp family. But after this three very nice rides for the finals on the top place, only one European Champion Title they could received, E Ch Dressage! The pressure was too high on them. Two times on the first place was a team from Austria: Loggia & Susanne Schuh. Susanne prepared the marebred in Michalow & owned by Gut Fronleitenhof - very serious for this event and she could won two disciplines Trail & Traditional Arabian Riding western. All other Master Titles was won by different teams from all over Europe.

Western Pleasure Canisia Romani from the Netherlands with Ashraf al Shams & Ladies Side Saddle Karin Lenhard mit El Trocadero Austria, Neele Schlichte Germany and stallion Al Ashar – the twelve years old girl, youngest rider on the event, very well trained by her father, was a class for her own! This three riders, could won the qualification and the European Champion Title!! After babybreak of both, Leona Böck & Baikal´s Shangrila, already European Champion Reining in 2018, won the qualification in Ranch Riding. The European Champion in Reining 2019 Verena Böckle & gelding CH Silverlight from Germany, showed again their talent and ability with the Gold in Reining Masters. In the E Ch the pressure was also too high and they missed, but became Gold E CH Ranch Riding! Antje Aigner & stallion Kalderon Qahira (AUT), GOLD Traditional Arabian Riding classic. With this results the 11 Gold medals from Master Championships/Qualification E Ch was very equal spread under the starters. Very interesting are the results of the others from the ten Best. Out of the „Best“ several could get not only in the ribbons, they could come higher and get GOLD in ECh! One of this is the mare VALERIE with extreme gates but not always easy to handle and her rider & owner Isabel Bartlechner Austria, winning the E Ch GOLD Classic Pleasure after placement 5.th in Masters. A newcomer in the whole event was the gelding, very well trained and showed, ERASMOS with Daniela Entner from Austria. From 5.th place in Masters they could develop to GOLD in E Ch Hunter Pleasure. q

Nationals

It was surprising. This year, we had forty percent more horse participation than the average for Nationals in recent years. No one expected it, since we are still living in the midst of a pandemic with no end date in sight. However, the Brazilian breeders held an unforgettable Nationals competition.

While Brazilian breeders believed that 2020 would be a lost year for breedrelated events, the board of the Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders Association saw an opening at the end of the year and worked the entire second semester to hold the BRAZILIAN NATIONALS ARABIAN HORSE SHOW. It began by gradually getting through to the breeders, followed by negotiating with the authorities of the event city to establish all protocols that should be followed to ensure protection against COVID 19 contamination. Attendance to the show, despite the good size crowd, was not as great as in previous years, but the enthusiasm was the same. The big surprise was the number of horses participating. In this Nationals, we had 40% more horses on the ring than last year. Brazilian breeders lamented not having this year a beautiful ring to watch their animals, whether live or through Internet streaming and enthusiastically attended the ABCCA call. The 5 guest judges, Joseph Polo-USA, Terry Holmes-USA, Gerard Paty-Bahrein, Luiz Eduardo Caio and Fรกbio Amorosino from Brazil, carefully examined 359 horses in halter and performance classes. The event also included Jump, Drums, and Rural Equestrian competitions, and a very tight Arabian Horse race. Judging began on November 11 and ended on November 14.

Interview with the

TERRY HOLMES USA

JOSEPH POLO USA

judges

The Brazilian Nationals was an amazing show to judge. The quality of horses was very high. The handlers did an excellent job presenting the horses. The breeders did an incredible job breeding the horses. The quality was high and the horses were outstanding. It was an honor to judge this prestigious show in Brazil. The championships. There was not one that just impressed me. I was impressed by all of our championships. Like I said in question one, the quality was high and the horses were just beautiful. They do a great job in Brazil and they should be very proud of the horses they’ve bred and shown. The atmosphere was amazing also in all the championship classes, even though the Covid restrictions or whatever. The enthusiasm was great and the championships were just out of this world.

There were quite a few horses that impressed me. I believe all of our champions could compete anywhere in the world and be very, very competitive and there wasn’t really one that just stood out. They all, I think if you put all of our champions in the ring together, I think you’d have a really hard time picking just one favorite. There was one exceptional yearling junior junior filly that stood out. There were many things the, like I said, the atmosphere at the show was amazing, the farm tours after the event, although I didn’t get to go to all of them, were quite impressive and, you know, you just realize that there are some really amazing Arabian horses in Brazil. And it’s not the first time I’ve judged there, so the hospitality is always amazing and the breeders, the trainers, everybody just go out of their way to make you feel at home. And again, it was just a tremendous honor to judge this prestigious show. And I wish to all the breeders and handlers continued success at their next nationals in July.

The quality at the Brazilian Nationals is always exceptional. The people, exhibitors, arena, & most importantly the horses are always first class!! Several horses I have judged at the Nationals in Brazil have gone on to win at the World Championships in Paris or the US. Personally, I feel it is truly difficult to pick one particular championship over another. With the quality in many different age groups, I appreciate the Breeders of Brazil and how, year after year, they continue to produce amazing Arabian horses! The young fillies were beautiful - HDF

Fontonella was amazing, and Marwan’s daughter Clio Cerise was stunning. Continuing to the age, stallion Falak, who was the Champion, looked great. I could keep naming many other horses. I truly cherished and loved judging them. A great group of horses!!!! Brazil will always be a special place for me. Since my first trip to Brazil for the great Paulo Machado, many years ago. I will carry those memories & life experiences with me for the rest of my life!!!! Personally and publicly I would like to thank the Breeders, exhibitors, & my close friends for the amazing memories we’ve created!! The Brazilian hospitality and kindness are greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

This show and the previous Brazilian Nationals have always been known as one of the top shows in the world. F o r m e , t h e Yo u n g M a r e Championships ( RFISa w a ri ) we re great, with many top-quality animals in that class. But in general, the level of competition was great.

The Gold Young Mare was beautiful, and if I’m not mistaken, she received unanimous votes. Amazing! As for the visit, it always feels like home. People and their dedication for the horse, attention to detail, the horses, the farms, and seeing how each Breeder is trying to achieve his goals.

SHOWS AND EVENTS

FÁBIO AMOROSINO BRAZIL

It is always a great honor to judge a Brazilian Nationals event, especially in times like these with the pandemic. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all board members, on behalf of Rodrigo Forte, for the impeccable organizing the show! Our breeders and exhibitors enjoyed the event by bringing high quality animals! I was very happy to see the value placed by the current board members on the Arabian horse. I was very impressed with our standard and especially by the National Gold Junior Filly Champion (HDF Fontonella) and the National Gold Young Colt Champion (Emir Sahara).

LUIZ EDUARDO M. CAIO BRAZIL

This is the 7th Brazilian Nationals I judge. Each of them had its own pleasant appeal, but this edition was special because of the times we’re currently living in. It was a pleasant surprise to see so many horses and so much quality. ABCCA was right when it decided to be brave and make the show happen. We always like females better, don’t we? The young mare and senior mare categories were top quality. I couldn’t take my eyes off Abbas al Ventur (Young Stallion), and Clio Cerise (Filly) is simply spectacular. Although the individual results of each judge’s scores were quite different at times, the horses that deserved to win, won. Finally, a recommendation: I think Copa Brasil should be judged by ABCCA’s new judges. It would be very good experience for them.

In addition to the Nationals, the Association organized a highly desired visit to some stud farms, providing transportation and accommodations to visitors when necessary. For this atypical year, only 3 farms made up the itinerary that lasted three days. HVP – Zetão Rodrigues manager This event was special because we inaugurated our new facilities!!! Given the ongoing pandemic, we were very happy with the presence of our breeder friends, and we were greatly honored by their attendance and purchases!!! It was another successful Open House for HVP.

RFI Arabians – Rodrigo Forte In light of the pandemic scenario, it was unknown how the Farm Tours would turn out, but they were all a success in the end, which made me extremely happy. In the case of ours, it exceeded our expectations in terms of attendance and sales. Although we made all sales in person, we had the advantage of broadcasting the events via Arabian Essence, showcasing our breeding programs to the whole world. In our case, we were able to show part of our breeding program that turns 30 in 2021, a selection of “RFI Maktub blood” through his sons, daughters and now grandchildren. It was a very pleasant event and I saw people happy with the result of the Nationals and with the interactions. Everyone followed the health protocols very well.

Rach Stud – Ricardo Saliba The event was very positive and the first international open house we have held. It also celebrated our 35 years of breeding. We were very proud to show our new horses, dams and stallions in this event dedicated to halter. We were going to hold our sport horse event at Ilha da Chapada, our other farm, but Covid forced us to postpone it. Regardless, we were very happy with the presence of the large number of breeders at Haras and taking into account the pandemic, attendance was higher than expected.
