BURLEANU’S NEW FOUR-YEAR TERM

MANCINI TAKES CHARGE

Răzvan Burleanu has been re-elected as the President of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF). The 33-year-old, the son of a former footballer – his father Gheorghe Burleanu made more than 350 top-flight appearances for various clubs in Romania – was confirmed in office for a second four-year term at the association’s general assembly in Bucharest. He first became President of the FRF in 2014. “My gratitude goes to the FRF team for their hard work over the last four Roberto Mancini is

INNOVATIONS

THE DIGITAL TEAM PLAYER

Dress rehearsal A player stats tablet used during the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in the Chile v. Germany match at Saint Petersburg’s Krestovsky Stadium on 2 July.

FIFA is providing all teams of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ with a player stats tablet as part of a technical set-up for match analysts and coaching teams. The digital team player is here. By Perikles Monioudis In the old days, a football team consisted of the player squad,

FANS

“WE ARE ABLE TO PICK UP ON CERTAIN VISUAL SIGNS MUCH BETTER THAN HEARING FANS” There are 70 million people around the world who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many of them love football and appreciate what FIFA has to offer them during the World Cup: a summary of every match in sign language. Alan Schweingruber spoke to Head of Production Stanko Pavlica.

Stanko, as a deaf person, when are you especially at a disadvantage when you watch football? Pavlica: We can of course see what’s happening on the pitch. However, there are many things that we always catch just a little too late, for example, when the referee blows his whistle. We often only realise afterwards that the match was stopped because of a foul, or we end up jumping for joy even though the referee already decided ages ago that it was offside.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GAMES FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING IN INTERNATIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE: FIFA will publish short summaries of all 64 World Cup matches in sign language. This is a special service that gives some 70 million people who are deaf or hard of hearing around the world the opportunity to see a short summary of the matches in sign language after the final whistle.

Do you prefer going to the stadium or watching a match on TV? Going to the stadium is a cool experience for us too. It’s best when we can sit as close as possible to the pitch. That way we can see the faces and gestures of the players and it’s much easier for us to gauge the atmosphere. We are able to pick up on certain visual signs much better than hearing fans.

Ben Moreau / FIFA

How do you mean? We are not distracted by noises and don’t feel the need to react to them. It means we automatically focus much more intensely on what we see. Sometimes something happens in the background that may seem unimportant but that we notice. The deaf are much better at grasping what it is they see and can often tell what is going to happen next. A good example of that is when players dive; we can usually tell when they are going to do it. For the third time, deaf fans will be able to follow a summary of all 64 World Cup matches in sign language on FIFA.com. Did you get much feedback? Yes, lots and most of it was positive. Deaf fans appreciate this service very much, as does the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). It would be great if other media offered sign language in their sports coverage.
