EAGLES RELOADED

RUGG LOOKS TO CLOSE OUT STELLAR CAREER

In each of the last three seasons, Boston College hasn’t had to rebuild. The Eagles just reload. The 23-man roster features 14 returning lettermen – seven seniors, three juniors and four sophomores. Nine of the returning lettermen started more than 10 games last year. Statistically, the Eagles return 80 percent of their goals scored, 77 percent of their assists and 79 percent of their points; led by seniors Kyle Bekker (eight goals, seven assists) and Charlie Rugg (eight goals, five assists). In addition, BC returns a combined 73 starts in the backfield which will be anchored by senior Justin Luthy in net, who is entering his fourth and final season as the starting goalkeeper.

Senior Charlie Rugg, a two-time All-ACC first team and all-region performer, returns for his final campaign leading the BC attack. He scored eight goals and assisted on five others last year, and five of the goals he scored proved to be game-winners. Rugg ranks sixth all-time at BC in goals and points. Mejia can also play up top alongside Rugg.

EAGLES RANKED NO. 14 IN NSCAA PRESEASON POLL

Boston College was ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Eagles checked in at No. 14 after concluding the 2011 season at No. 15. Two other Atlantic Coast Conference teams were ranked in the preseason poll along with the Eagles: North Carolina (No. 1) and Maryland (No. 9). Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest were three of the top four votegetters outside the top 25.

LUTHY ANCHORS DEFENSE AGAIN

Justin Luthy, a 6-foot, 165-pound product of Dublin, Ohio, has started 62 of the team’s last 64 games in goal. He is poised to become the winningest goalkeeper in Boston College history as he is just two victories away from setting the career record of 39. Luthy also ranks fourth in shutouts (18), fifth in saves (242) and seventh in goals against average (1.07). Last year, Luthy played all but 18 minutes in net. He saved 75 percent of the shots he faced and had a 1.22 goals against average. Junior John Bunkall and sophomore Keady Segel both saw limited action in goal last season, and incoming freshman Alex Kapp will also join the goalie ranks.

EXPERIENCE IN THE BACKFIELD

Boston College returns a combined 73 starts from last year on the defensive end of the pitch. The Eagles lose the services of Patrick Chin (21 starts) and Conor Fitzpatrick (12 starts), who battled injuries throughout the year. Leading the crop of returners is junior Chris Ager, an All-ACC and all-region honoree in 2011. The defense returns two more starters in senior Stefan Carter and junior Ryan Dunn, who combined for 35 starts last year. Senior Kevin Mejia also spent a lot of time on the back line, playing in 20 matches and earning 13 starts. Senior Isaac Taylor understands the Eagles’ defensive schemes as he has played in 43 career contests. Last season, BC ranked third in the ACC in goals against average (1.21) and shutouts (7), and was fourth in goals allowed (1.24).

SUSTAINED SUCCESS

Boston College has won 10 or more games 13 times in its 24 years of soccer under head coach Ed Kelly. Including its 14-6-1 record last fall, Boston College has won at least 10 games nine times in the last 12 seasons. The Eagles captured a school-record 18 wins during the 2002 season.

THE ACC

North Carolina captured the 2011 NCAA title which marked the 15th NCAA national championship for the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC now has five of the last seven national champions. The ACC owned 75 percent of the 2008 and 2009 College Cups and North Carolina was the lone conference representative in both 2010 and 2011.

Newcomers Dan Norris and Matt Wendelken could provide an immediate impact on the pitch, and Nick Corliss and Zack Rockmore will also fight for playing time.

BC IN THE ACC

Boston College has a 25-23-8 record in seven years of competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference, including a 23-13-4 record the last five seasons of regular-season competition. The team is 27-21-8 in ACC regular-season action and 8-5-0 in the league tournament.

A DYNAMIC MIDFIELD

The Eagles return a plethora of skill and experience in the middle of the field, highlighted by a pair of All-ACC players. Senior Kyle Bekker emerged as one of the most dangerous scoring threats in the conference as he led the BC with eight goals, seven assists and 23 points. All of those numbers ranked in the top 10 in the ACC which earned him All-ACC First Team and all-region honors. Sophomore Diego Medina-Mendez made an immediate impact and was named to the conference’s All-Freshmen Team. He finished the season with eight goals and 18 points. Senior Colin Murphy brings a total of 58 career starts and international experience to the team. He will serve his second year as captain. The Eagles did take a hit as they lost Amit Aburmad (six goals, five assists) and Steve Rose (one assist) to graduation, but their depth in the middle remains unchanged. Local freshman Derrick Boateng and newcomer Jason Abbott will battle for a starting spot in the middle while Brendan Hayes and Christian Johnson have already spent a year in the Eagles’ system. Freshmen Dylan Pritchard will also vie for a starting spot here and in the defensive end.

COACHING STAFF

S O C C E R

A four-year starter and three-time All-New England honoree, he established career records for minutes (7,380) and saves (324). He concluded his collegiate career ranked second on the school’s career goals against average list (1.25).

An All-Colonial Athletic Conference honoree as a senior in 2005, he twice earned the program’s Most Valuable Player award – in 2004 and 2005 – and helped guide the Huskies to an America East Championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament as a freshman in 2002. Saccoccio earned America East Rookie of the Year honors that season.

Murray’s playing experience began in 1988 when he played professionally in the St. Patrick’s Athletics League of Ireland for five seasons. In 1991-92, Darren attended the Football Association Ireland’s Soccer School of Excellence. Upon graduation from the School, Murray then played amateur soccer in the St. James Gate League in Ireland from 1992-93.

TOM McELROY AWARD AN EAGLE FOR ALL-TIME

Tom McElroy was a very special young man. He came to the Heights from Boston College High, where he was an All-Conference midfielder. In the fall of his freshman year, Tom elected not to try out for the squad. His determination to focus on his studies exclusively, lasted less than a semester. He joined the team for the indoor soccer program that winter. The culmination of the indoor season was the prestigious UConn tournament that attracted some 30 teams. BC was to participate, but almost withdrew because it lost its goalkeepers to injuries and exams. Into the breach stepped Tom. Playing a totally unfamiliar position, the converted midfielder led the Eagles to a surprising fourth place finish, and was named the all-tournament goalkeeper. Tom’s collegiate soccer career had begun. Tom was a tireless worker, willing to make any sacrifice to become a top flight collegiate goaltender. His work ethic was without parallel, and by his senior year, 1979, he was a top college keeper, and a definite pro prospect.

TOM MCELROY AWARD

In 1979 Boston College upgraded its schedule to include national powers St. Louis and San Francisco. St. Louis bested the Eagles, 2-0, but cocaptain McElroy stopped three breakaways. San Francisco, defending NCAA champs, couldn’t get the ball past him. In an early season snowstorm, the teams battled to a 0-0 tie, as Tom robbed four USF players of breakaway goals. “By 1979, he was the best I’d ever seen against the breakaway,” commented Ben Brewster, BC’s soccer coach. In January of his senior year, Tom and his family learned that he was suffering from cancer. Treatments began, and things looked hopeful for awhile. Because he had only played three years of varsity soccer, Tom decided to return the next fall and play a final varsity season. Although he wasn’t as physically strong as before, and had to miss some games for treatments or recuperation, Tom let on to no one. Only Coach Brewster and Bill Flynn, BC’s Athletic Director, knew of his illness. Tom played THOMAS MCELROY half the games in a successful 15-3-3 season. His final appearance was a 3-1 ECAC AWARD WINNERS play-off victory over Bridgeport, the Eagles’ first soccer championship. (Presented to the Boston College junior men’s and women’s soccer players who Tom was an outstanding goaltender, but what endures are the impressions he made on demonstrate excellence in soccer in the those who knew him: “Tom McElroy was the kind of person you would pick first if you Boston College program) were building a team from scratch. He was the first one at practice. If something had to be done he was always there. If you needed a smiling face to drop by, he invariably showed up. He was just a fabulous young man”, commented Ben Brewster. “Every time we ran a clinic for a youth group, the kids would flock to him. They really loved him. He was a great teacher with incredible patience”, noted a former teammate. Another teammate noted “….Hardly a day in my life goes by without some thought of Boston College; and I often remember fondly my friendship both on and off the field with Tom. In my mind, his memory is a challenge, not just to the recipients of the Scholarship, but to each of us as Boston College Alumni…. – to push ourselves a little harder – to be the best that we can be at work or play, or in our personal lives. Tom’s zest for life is still with us who were fortunate to know him…….” When Tom completed his career, he had set Boston College soccer records for most games played (43), most shutouts in a season (10) and career (20), and lowest goals against average in a career (1.05). Tom died on July 17, 1981, at age 22, succumbing to cancer after a characteristically courageous battle. On October 23, 1987, Tom was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame, the first soccer player so honored. In September, 2000, almost 20 years after Tom died, the McElroy family received this note from another of Tom’s teammates, “….I often think of Tom’s passing in the summer between my sophomore and junior years at BC. My clearest memory of Tom off the soccer field is the way he befriended the freshman players on the soccer team each year. He always reached out to the new guys in a way that none of the other upper-classmen did….” The McElroy family established the Tom McElroy Memorial Scholarship on November 16, 1983, with an initial balance of $3,095, representing contributions to Boston College in Tom’s memory. In 2005, it became the first athletic memorial scholarship at BC to exceed $1m, and continues to be the number one athletic memorial scholarship. From inception through the end of the 2009-2010 academic year, 93 student-athletes have received aid totaling $840,967. Chris Ager, from Gjettum, Norway, a second-semester freshman in the College of Arts & Sciences, is the 2010 soccer player who best demonstrates the qualities and attributes we remember so well in Tom. All recipients, including Chris, exhibit Tom’s enthusiasm for soccer and dedication to excellence.
