Baby Ellie and Marian’s New Hospital Turn Five
2012 Baby Ellie with her mother’s wedding band on her tiny hand.
Just a few short months after the opening of the new Marian Regional Medical Center in 2012, Brittany Moomey gave birth to a daughter at only 25 weeks into her pregnancy. At birth, Baby Ellie weighed only one pound, 15 ounces and was so small she fit in the palm of her mother’s hand. Thanks to the dedicated care of the physicians and the clinical team at Marian, both Ellie and Brittany were expertly cared for. Today, Ellie is a healthy and happy big sister, sharing her energetic spirit wherever she goes with her brother, Oliver. As Marian continues to provide high quality care for all patients in need, we wish to thank our generous community members for your strong support of our mission to deliver humankindness in every stage of life.
O U R CO RE SERVI CE VALU ES DIGNITY | COLLABORATION | JUSTICE STEWARDSHIP | EXCELLENCE
LETTER FRO M TH E PRESI D ENT Dear Friends of Marian, As we embark on a new year, it is my great honor to share with you the many ways in which 2017 was yet another successful year filled with significant growth and many noteworthy accomplishments. Marian Regional Medical Center continues to expand at a rapid pace and remains clinically ranked among the nation’s finest hospitals. We also remain focused on fulfilling our promise to the community to deliver the highest level of care for our community, showcased in this edition of Innovation. This past year, Marian celebrated its fifth anniversary of the new hospital since opening its doors in 2012. With vast program advancements and ongoing recognitions for service and clinical excellence, Marian will continue to invest in the most advanced technologies and the most effective medical treatments. Marian’s promise to our community will be furthered by the legacy of giving by one of Santa Maria’s leading examples of philanthropy, Sue J. Sword. In honor of her longstanding generosity and service to Marian, our Heart Center now has the distinct privilege to bear Sue’s name as the Sue J. Sword Heart Center. In 2017, Marian celebrated a historic milestone with the graduation of its first class of physician residents from the Marian Family Medicine Residency Program. These top ranking physician residents come to Marian through our affiliation with USC Keck School of Medicine and Western University. I am also pleased to share that of the inaugural class of five residents, three have elected to stay on the Central Coast and are currently seeing patients in our community. It is with great pleasure that I also announce that the success of the Marian Family Medicine Residency Program has paved the way for the launch of a new residency program: the Marian Obstetrics and Gynecological Residency Program. With 3,600 deliveries annually, the Marian Maternal and Newborn Center team has the privilege of gifting local families with one of life’s most meaningful experiences—the birth of a new baby. Like the Marian Family Medicine Residency Program, the new OB-GYN Residency Program will invest in furthering the education of our physicians with a goal to retain the majority of our graduating residents to live and practice on the Central Coast. Marian is proud to continue earning top accolades in patient safety, quality and service. Most notably, for the fifth straight year Marian earned an impressive “A” patient safety score from the most recent ratings report from the Leapfrog Group. Marian also earned five-star ratings from Healthgrades for treatment of sepsis, carotid surgery, pulmonary embolism, and total hip replacement. Due to your ongoing support, Marian has the invaluable opportunity to positively transform health care for all in the Santa Maria Valley and Central Coast. I, along with our entire team of employees, physicians and volunteers, continue to be inspired by your countless gifts of generosity. Marian’s thriving future would not be possible without your meaningful support and Marian remains eternally appreciative of your investment in our programs, medical professionals, and vision. In gratitude, Kerin A. Mase President & CEO Marian Regional Medical Center

The Santa Maria Valley has been fortunate to be filled with remarkably generous people. Among those individuals, there is a name deeply connected with that of charitable giving: Sue J. Sword.
name. Marian will forever remain grateful to Sue for her unparalleled support which will allow Marian to provide for the highest level of cardiac care and technology for our community and future generations to come.”
In appreciation for Sue’s lifetime of generosity and service to Marian Regional Medical Center, the Marian Heart Center was recently renamed the Sue J. Sword Heart Center. On November 9, 2017, Sue’s legacy was honored with a special unveiling ceremony where representatives from Marian’s Sponsoring Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, hospital leadership, Board members, medical staff, employees, volunteers, and members of the community attended to express their sincere gratitude for her legacy of support to Marian.
As a local philanthropic pioneer, Sue's relationship with Marian Regional Medical Center spans more than seven decades. In 1945, Sue moved from Texas and decided to make Santa Maria her home. Sue quickly developed a strong bond with the Sisters of Saint Francis and experienced the positive impact of the Sisters’ healing work as her first job in Santa Maria was at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital, Marian’s predecessor.

dear friend to Captain Allan and Marian Hancock. Marian Hancock quickly recognized Sue’s intelligence and high level of professionalism, which led to Sue’s eventual rise to the position of President of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad where she was to be the only female president of a short line railroad west of the Mississippi River.
A Giving Heart Sue’s enormous heart has brought extraordinary blessings on just about every civic and nonprofit institution in the Greater Santa Maria Valley. These range from Marian Regional Medical Center to the Santa Maria Valley Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA to Allan Hancock College, with a whole host of organizations, large and small, in between. Sue has always had a pivotal role at Marian Regional Medical Center. She served on the Marian Hospital Community Board and was instrumental in the founding of the Marian Foundation Board in 1982 and today remains an honorary board member. With her strong business acumen, she was instrumental in Foundation Board finance and policy committees, and it was Sue’s visionary leadership that led to the formation of the Marian Foundation’s operating policies. Since the inception of the Marian Foundation, Sue has provided significant support to every major capital endeavor throughout the medical center's history.

At the Sue J. Sword Heart Center unveiling event, both Jason and Margaret offered remarks of gratitude to Sue for her legendary service and generosity.
Larry Lavagnino shares a moment with his fellow Project Heart Center leader Sue at the unveiling ceremony.
Over the years, Sue developed a strong admiration and deep respect for her longtime cardiologist, Ram K. Setty, MD, and wanted to honor his commitment to her cardiac care. Through this connection, Sue became a founding member of the Marian Foundation’s Legacy Society in 1993 by including Marian Regional Medical Center in her estate plan. When asked what she believes Marian Hancock would say to see her work and the present Marian Regional Medical Center, Sue smiles tenderly and offers, “She would be very, very pleased and would probably say, ‘My Susie is keeping things going.’ She would be truly elated to know that I was carrying things forward.”

TAKI N G ADVAN CEM ENTS TO H EART Sue J. Sword Heart Center is first in Santa Barbara County to implant world’s smallest leadless pacemaker
The Sue J. Sword Heart Center at Marian Regional Medical Center has taken tremendous strides in providing the most recent advancements in Santa Maria. The Heart Center performed two medical feats for the first time at Marian by offering the world’s smallest pacemaker and expanding structural heart program offerings.
Furthering Care by Going Small For patients with bradycardia, a slow or irregular heart rhythm, the MicraTranscatheter Pacing System is a new type of device that provides patients with the most advanced pacing technology available at one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker. Brett M. Gidney, MD, performed this first procedure at Marian. This device is small enough to be delivered through a catheter and implanted directly into the heart with small tines, creating a safe alternative to conventional pacemakers all while being cosmetically invisible.

Amplatzer PFO Occluder
Through the recent addition of Joel Lardizabal, MD, to Marian Regional Medical Center’s Medical Staff, the Heart Center has begun implanting the first and only FDA-approved device designed to reduce the risk of recurrent ischemic strokes in patients diagnosed with a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a small opening between the upper chambers of the heart.
The Amplatzer PFO Occluder device was designed to close the PFO and lower the risk of stroke caused by dangerous clots

Benchmarked against other like hospitals across the nation, the Sue J. Sword Heart Center ranks in the top 10% in many of its quality metrics, according to the American College of Cardiology, and the high caliber of physicians and medical staff will continue to further the level of cardiac care on the Central Coast.

TO G NAZZI CO LO N NAD E Celebrating the new Dante E. Tognazzi Jr. Outpatient Services Colonnade
At the blessing and dedication of the Dante E. Tognazzi Jr. Outpatient Services Colonnade on November 15, 2017, Marian Regional Medical Center was honored to recall the many blessings the hospital has received. As the dedication ceremony announced, the Outpatient Services Colonnade will serve as an inviting doorway into the healing work at Marian. Thanks to the generous planned gift of the late Dante E. Tognazzi Jr., Marian has honored his life through this welcoming feature on the campus.
With several Sisters of Saint Francis, members of Dante’s family, and many community members on hand, this dedication ceremony reminded all of Marian’s commitment to patients as we seek to fulfill our promise of serving the community for years to come.
In addition to celebrating the life and legacy of Dante E. Tognazzi Jr., Marian leaders had the distinct privilege of also expressing their sincere gratitude to the Sisters of Saint Francis, Marian’s founders. Since Marian’s inception, the medical center has been guided by the Sisters’ visionary leadership to deliver high quality, compassionate care. The Madonna and Child sculpture also adorns our new Dante E. Tognazzi Jr. Outpatient Services Colonnade. The exquisite likeness of the Blessed Mother and Christ child serves as a reminder that Marian serves to heal all with compassion and love. The Madonna and Child also is an iconic and moving visual depiction of love that is central to the faith-based ministry of the Sisters of Saint Francis.

The Marian Foundation wishes to express immense appreciation to Agnes, Michael, and Stephanie Grogan for this meaningful gift, and for many years of service, generosity and friendship as members of the Marian family. Stephanie is a recent retiree after nearly 30 years of service to Marian and Dignity Health, a tenure of service which includes leadership of the Marian Foundation. In addition, Agnes Grogan leaves a legacy of service as a Hospital Community Board member, a Distinguished Service Award recipient, and as a volunteer serving patients, families and visitors in the Outpatient Services Lobby. The Madonna and Child is an iconic and moving visual depiction of love that is central to the faith-based ministry of the Sisters of Saint Francis; a shared faith that the Grogan Family embraces and a ministry that they hold in high regard.

At the blessing and dedication of the Dante E. Tognazzi Jr. Outpatient Services Colonnade on November 15, 2017, Marian Regional Medical Center was honored to publicly announce the sponsorship of the Madonna and Child sculpture made possible by a generous gift of $25,000 from Agnes Grogan and $25,000 from Michael and Stephanie Grogan. The Madonna and Child adorns our new Dante E. Tognazzi Jr. Outpatient Services Colonnade. The exquisite likeness of the Blessed Mother and Christ child serves as a reminder that Marian serves to heal all with compassion and love. This sponsorship is very meaningful as the Blessed Mother holds special significance as the patroness for which Marian is named. When asked about what compelled her and her family to make such a significant gift, Stephanie shares, “To be a small part of presenting this beautiful depiction of Madonna and Child to those that pass through the colonnade and the facility entrance is an honor and privilege for my husband, Mike and I, and for the Grogan family.
“It is our hope that her presence brings comfort, a sense of peace, and the feeling of being lovingly cared for by the Marian family of employees, volunteers, physicians, and caregivers, and to all who enter into their care.”

TH E N EXT G EN ERATI O N O F PHYSI CIANS Marian cultivates a new generation of primary care and obstetrics and gynecology physicians
Those attempting to visit a primary care physician might have noticed difficulty in scheduling an appointment. Not only is it difficult to develop long-term care with a primary care physician based upon the high demand, but it has also been predicted to get only worse with a shortage of more than 45,000 family care physicians by 2020. That is why the leadership at Marian Regional Medical Center responded to this great need with the formation of the Family Medicine Residency Program in 2014. The program affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of USC and Western University cultivates primary care physicians that are incredibly needed in the area. In July of 2017, Marian graduated the first class of five from the Residency Program, with three exhaustive years of training and preparation culminating in this historic commencement. “As we grow to meet the rapidly expanding needs of the community, these programs will serve residents of the Central Coast with high quality physicians,” affirms David Oates, MD, Medical Director, Medical Education. “With the Family Medicine Residency and Obstetrics and Gynecological Residency Programs, Marian will help provide excellent teaching for the next generation of physicians for years to come.”
10
The tremendous success of the Family Medicine Residency Program has bred the creation of yet another residency program at Marian. In 2017, Marian Regional Medical Center earned accreditation to begin an Obstetrics and Gynecological Residency Program. With the first class slated to begin the four-year residency cycle in July of 2018, a tremendous sense of excitement has permeated the corridors of our teaching hospital. “The new Obstetrics and Gynecological Residency Program will further our ability to care for our community. There will be an estimated shortage of 6,000 to 8,000 OB-GYN physicians by the year 2020, and the OB-GYN Residency Program will provide training and ultimately new women’s health specialists as part of our solution to ensuring the needs of the Central Coast are met,” said Laurence Shields, MD, Medical Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine. With the shortage of providers in health care, the dedication of the physicians and leadership at Marian has given birth to these programs, forming a culture of teaching and research throughout Santa Maria and the Central Coast.

AN AFTERN O O N BY TH E SEA 2017 The 30th Annual Dinner, An Afternoon by the Sea, brought many sponsors, contributors, and supporters together to celebrate the many blessings of Marian Regional Medical Center has received. One of those celebratory moments was the honoring of Sue J. Sword’s legacy of giving in the Santa Maria Valley with the renaming of the Marian Heart Center to the Sue J. Sword Heart Center. As part of the new hospital's fifth anniversary celebration, we were also graced with the youthful presence of five-year-old Ellie Moomey who was born 15 weeks early and weighing less than two pounds at the new hospital. Due to the generosity of our donors and community, the Annual Dinner raised more than $335,274 in support of the newly named Sue J. Sword Heart Center.
In appreciation for her service to Marian as a medical professional, volunteer, and Foundation Board member, Carol Reiner was recognized for her continued years of service to the Marian community with the Distinguished Service Award. Carol (center) is pictured with Marian Foundation Board officers.
An exceptional highlight of the event was the recognition of the service of Sister Sheral Marshall, OSF, and Carol Reiner with the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award. As a longtime member of the Hospital Community Board, Sister Sheral was honored at the event for her tremendously important role in the community of Marian. Carol was also honored in appreciation for her exceptional service to Marian as a medical professional, volunteer, and Foundation Board member. The Marian Foundation would like to express gratitude to the many sponsors, contributors, supporters, and volunteers who played a vital role in making the 30th Annual Dinner a tremendous success.

11TH ANNUAL RANCHO VINO CoastHills Credit Union raises $72,000 to benefit the Emergency Services Expansion Project
As the Emergency Services Expansion Project construction begins at Marian, the Marian Foundation would be remiss to not thank the many individuals who have joined together to ensure that the highest quality of care is present in the lives of many in the Greater Santa Maria Valley. One such event that has helped foster this growth arrived on October 14, 2017. Through the 11th Annual CoastHills Credit Union Rancho Vino event at Presqu'ile Winery, $72,000 was raised to further this vital project. At this event, more than 120 people gathered to hear Peter Brinkerhoff’s testimonial of the lifesaving care provided for his four-year-old son, Keagan.
12
In July 2017, Keagan was enjoying a pool party with family and friends in Nipomo when the unimaginable happened. Young Keagan got out of the pool to play and just minutes later he slipped back into the pool undetected without his water wings. Through the quick action of individuals at the party,

Coast. The Marian Foundation wishes to thank the entire CoastHills Credit Union team for their exceptional generosity in support of the Emergency Services Expansion Project.
This year’s Rancho Vino could not have been as successful without the support of Senior Vice President of Operations at Dignity Health, Charles J. Cova and his wife Marie. “Marie and I are honored to make this very special gift in support of Marian’s Emergency Services Expansion Project,” says Charles J. Cova. “Accidents can happen on any day, at any time. It is clear that this near tragedy is an event that can happen to any family. We are overjoyed that Keagan is doing well, and we appreciate the incredible importance of having talented, well-trained first responders and a state-of-the-art Emergency Department with world-class physicians, nurses, caregivers, and support staff who genuinely care about our community. Just as they serve nearly 7,000 patients every month, the Emergency Department Team at Marian was there for Keagan, truly making a difference in his life and the life of his family and friends.” With representatives from CoastHills Credit Union, Presqu'ile Winery, and Marian Regional Medical Center physicians and leaders on hand at the event, Rancho Vino furthered emergency medicine and humankindness here on the Central Keagan, a pediatric near drowning patient, greatly benefited from the lifesaving and healing work of Marian’s Emergency Department.

With a history of supporting local efforts, BMW and Community Volkswagen of Santa Maria continue to further their commitment to the local community. The Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation is grateful for the recent $50,000 gift made to benefit the Emergency Services Expansion Project from BMW and Community Volkswagen of Santa Maria. These dealerships have joined many automotive, agricultural, and business leaders from the Santa Maria Valley to support this $2.5 million fundraising effort. “With the tremendous growth of patient volume in our Emergency Department, this gift will help us reach the goal of expanding our capacity to care,” offered Samuel Miller IV, DO, Medical Director of Marian Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Services and Marian Foundation Board member. “Marian needs to be ready to meet the needs of future emergency care, and I am thrilled to have their partnership.”
14

Due to this record growth, more space is necessary to continue meeting the community’s growing emergency and trauma needs. “The dedicated nature of our business community is a true testament of the exceptional generosity of the Santa Maria Valley. The commitment by BMW and Community Volkswagen of Santa Maria will further emergency care offered at Marian and we are incredibly grateful for their meaningful philanthropic gift,” said Kerin A. This is a testament to the culture of gratitude that is found in the patient rooms, hallways, and lobbies throughout the hospital. “The annual Circle of Friends Giving Campaign provides for much needed programs and services for our community,” Jessa Brooks, Vice President of Philanthropy, shared. “This supports every patient and family member that walks through the doors at Marian. The culture of giving and gratitude exemplified at Marian is truly remarkable and helps fund needs that would otherwise not be possible.”
Blessing Others Tenfold As a Breast Care Program Nurse Navigator, Elizabeth “Liz” Elliott has been a critical part of the community’s appreciation for the services provided at Mission Hope Cancer Center. With a deep desire to give generously, Liz and her husband made a significant gift to the Marian Foundation to benefit Marian employees who are both cancer patients and also experiencing financial hardship. Giving back is an important aspect of Liz’s life. “I was raised with the philosophy that you need to give back, and I believe you are blessed tenfold if you give.” Fortunately for the Marian employees who are also cancer patients, they have a wonderful blessing in Liz as their breast cancer Nurse Navigator.

GIFTS ANYONE CAN MAKE Leaving a legacy of dignity through a planned gift
A planned gift is one of the most significant charitable donations one can make in their lifetime. With so many different vehicles for giving, there is a right one for any situation in life. Planned giving provides a donor with a platform for leaving a lasting legacy with significant meaning. Through this gift, a donor chooses what their legacy will be, how the gift is to be made, and who is trusted to carry it out. Here are a few benefits for planned giving: • Give a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime • Make a gift that pays you income for life • Donate your house, take a tax deduction and continue to live in it rent-free • Give life insurance you no longer need • Donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares and realize larger tax savings than when you donate cash • Preserve your estate for your heirs and leave a legacy to Marian at the same time
Marty Reynolds: Leaving a Lasting Legacy As a longtime volunteer at Marian, Marty Reynolds was passionate about the mission of the medical center. Frequently volunteering twice a week as a hospice Marty Reynolds volunteer, Marty would care for the surviving family, oftentimes befriending them. Her gracious presence benefited numerous widows, widowers, and surviving family members. Marty's commitment to the healing ministry of the Sisters of Saint Francis led to the designation of Marian as a beneficiary in her trust. Through her planned gift, she was able to bless the hospice care provided in the Santa Maria Valley ensuring that her legacy lived on. For more information, contact the

A LASTING LEGACY OF INSPIRATION: JOE AND JEAN OLIVERA In 2017, the Marian Foundation Board lost a remarkable honorary member: Joseph (Joe) Olivera.
The late Joseph and Jean Olivera were Legacy Society members. They spent their lives building a legacy of love for each other, their family, and the charitable works of organizations like Marian Regional Medical Center.
Throughout his life, Joe remained an influential community leader and dear friend of Marian Regional Medical Center. Joe and his late wife of over 70 years, Jean, lived a life of charity in service to God, family, and country. As a result, they spent their lives building a legacy of love for each other, their family, and local charitable organizations such as Marian Regional Medical Center.
Joe was a servant leader to Marian Regional Medical Center for more than three decades, offering both leadership and advocacy throughout strategic times of growth for the hospital. Not only was Joe a founding Marian Foundation Board member from 1982 to 1983, he also served as the Chair in 1994. Due to his incredible support and history of service to the Sisters of Saint Francis, he was appointed as an honorary Marian Foundation Board member in 2000. Growing up in Santa Maria, both Joe and Jean remembered the opening of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital, Marian’s predecessor, when they were just children. Joe served in World War II and after being severely injured during the Battle of Saipan in the South Pacific, he returned to Santa Maria. In the years following, the young couple began their family and all four of their children were born at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital. Joe and Jean will forever be remembered for their charitable giving and service to the Santa Maria community. Marian Regional Medical Center remains grateful to this couple for their legacy of love, kindness, and thoughtful stewardship which will live on to benefit future generations of Marian patients and families.

As the leaders for the Care Coordination Department, the co-chairs championed an employee effort to launch a new patient assistance program and fund for patients in need.
Thank you to these Marian employees and volunteers who have contributed to the 2017 Circle of Friends Campaign in support of Marian programs and services. Their generosity is especially meaningful given the time and talent they share every day in providing the highest level of care to Marian patients and families.
