Russia and Czech Republic are the new 14 & Under European Summer Cups champions following an exciting week of play that saw 64 national teams in action at 9 venues across the continent.

Czech Republic and Russia win 14&U European Summer Cups titles << set to force a decider but was unable to prolong the Russian victory much longer, with Dubrivnyy sealing the title after a high-quality two-hour battle. The Russians then completed a 3-0 win, staging an impressive fightback to win the doubles 3-6 7-6 (107). Both Dubrivnyy and Klimov also served on the victorious Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD team in February, giving Russia a clean sweep of 14 & Under boys’ team titles this season. At the girls’ final rounds in Loano, unseeded Czech Republic came from behind to end Spain’s hopes of a first-ever girls’ Europa Cup title. The Spaniards had ended the run of defending champions Great Britain in the quarterfinals before surprising top seeds Russia in the semis, while the Czechs had also scored two upset wins, over seeds Italy and Romania. Spain started the final strongly as Paula Arias Manjon recovered from the loss of the opening set to surprise Anna Slovakova, ranked 398 places above her, and secure a 1-0 lead. In the battle of the #1 players, Europe’s #3 Marketa Vondrousova then showed her authority by leveling the match with a 7-5 6-4 win over 12th-ranked Eva Guerrero Alvarez. Spain then drafted in the fresh legs of Noelia Bouzo Zanotti who replaced Guerrero for the deciding doubles match, but the more experienced pair of Slovakova & Vondrousova strode to a straight sets win to claim the title for their country for the first time since 1999.

The 14 & Under Summer Cups have a double purpose, serving also as the European qualifying competition for the ITF World Junior Tennis tournament. The top five teams from both the boys’ and girls’ events (plus the Czech Republic as hosts) will qualify to take part in the finals of the world’s team event for Under 14s in Prostejov in August. The remaining European Summer Cups events (for players aged 16 and 18 & Under) will be played during the first week of August. Germany leads race to European Tennis Trophy Germany has stormed to the lead in the Race to the European Tennis Trophy, opening up a 500-point lead over nearest challenger Russia. Germany’s dominance is due in no small part to some outstanding results in senior tennis. With three of the four main European senior events already completed, the majority of the points in this category have already been allocated and Germany is already guaranteed to retain the Senior Tennis Trophy it has won every year since 1990. Russia’s strong performance is due largely to its results in the junior team events to have been completed so far this year. Two Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD titles from five finals have left the nation in a strong position to win the Junior Tennis trophy for a ninth time in the last ten years. The Czech Republic is also in contention to defend its titles, having won the Overall Performance and Professional Tennis trophies for the first time in 2012. Currently in fourth place overall, the Czechs stand 660 points behind the leaders, but are joint leaders in the professional tennis category and are still alive in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, where a repeat victory would make up the overall deficit. Italy leads the professional tennis standings alongside the Czech Republic, and currently holds a slim lead in the race to in third place overall, thanks to some prolific winners in seniors tennis. The Netherlands is seventh overall, and retains its usual spot atop the Wheelchair Tennis standings though with a reduced lead compared to last year over France and Great Britain, who share second

place (and are ranked fifth and eighth overall). Other nations to feature in the overall Top Ten include Serbia and Austria, with 2011 winners Spain currently trailing in tenth place. The Trophy is designed to recognise the annual achievements of Tennis Europe's 49 member nations, providing a comprehensive overview of the performances of players and teams representing national tennis federations across four disciplines of the sport throughout the season. The first Trophy Race update of 2013 includes all points earned by nations during the first six months of the year. Rankings that use a rollover 52-week system are not included to the points totals at this stage. The final point standings will be announced during the first week of the 2014 season, and the awards presented to national federations at the 2014 Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting. European Beach Tennis Championships A record-breaking 21 nations have so far confirmed their entries for the sixth annual European Beach Tennis Championships, which will visit Great Britain for the first time when they are held in Brighton on the south coast of England from 9-11 August. 140 players are expected to take part in the event, which consists of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles competitions. The national entry list is led by Italy, whose teams have dominated the European championships so far, winning the gold and silver medals in the men’s and women’s events at all previous editions. Last year’s women’s title was won by current world #1s Simona Bonadonna & Eva D’Elia, while the men’s title went to world #2 Marco Garavini & #5 Paolo Tazzari, who lifted the trophy for a second time. Czech Republic, Russia, Spain and last year's hosts San Marino are likely to field some of the strongest teams in the draw, while the host nation will have high hopes and is able to nominate one additional team in each competition. Reflecting the continued expansion of the ITF Beach Tennis Circuit, two nations (Lithuania and Ukraine) are set to take part at the Championships for the first time.

Bartoli & Murray claim maiden Wimbledon titles Andy Murray has ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a Wimbledon men’s singles champion in style by comprehensively beating world #1 Novak Djokovic to collect his second Grand Slam title. In a match between the world’s top two players, it was the lower-ranked Murray who controlled proceedings, backed by a partisan crowd of 15,000 on the Centre Court. Having been comfortably ahead throughout most of the match, the second seed was in danger of letting his opponent back into the match when serving for victory, squandering a 40-0 lead and having to save three break points before eventually seeing a Djokovic backhand float into the net. The Scot now holds two major titles, as well as the Olympic gold medal and strengthens his grip on the world #2 position. Murray described his relief at finally having ended his nation’s wait for a champion, saying, “It's really hard. For the last four or five years, it's been very, very tough, very stressful, a lot of pressure. The few days before the tournament are really difficult, as well. It's just kind of everywhere you go. It's so hard to avoid everything because of how big this event is, but also because of the history and no Brit having won. It's been very, very difficult. The tournament was rocked by a series of high profile upsets during the first week, with Roland Garros winner Rafael Nadal ousted by Steve Darcis in his opening match and 7-time champion Roger Federer seeing his record-setting run of 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances end at the hands of Sergey Stakhovskiy. The women’s singles was arguably even more upset-strewn than the men’s event. Red hot favourite Serena Williams entered the tournament determined to defend her title after triumphing at Roland Garros and riding a career-best win streak of 24 matches, with few pundits looking past the American or the other two most-recent Slam winners Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka as potential winners. Incredibly, all three were out by the end of the first week. If Marion Bartoli benefited from the collapse of the lower half of the draw, she certainly did it in style, advancing to the final without the loss of a set with a steely determination. Her final opponent Sabine Lisicki had a tougher route on paper, but her results were as impressive as they were improbable. After ending Serena’s reign in the fourth round by recovering from 0-3 down in the final set, she navigated

past Kaia Kanepi to set up a semifinal with last year’s finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, now the favourite to win her first Grand Slam in the absence of her main rivals. Playing her second semi-final at Wimbledon, Lisicki held her nerve in a marathon third set, eventually ousting the Pole 9-7 to advance to the biggest match of her career. The nervous energy that Lisicki had harnessed so well in her previous matches betrayed her in the final, with the German becoming increasingly frustrated at her erratic serving and the lack of errors from her French opponent. Bartoli later commented that she recognised Lisicki’s nerves from her own first appearance in the Wimbledon final in 2007, and knew that she would win. After racing to a commanding 6-1 4-1 lead, Bartoli briefly lost concentration as Lisicki harnessed the crowd’s support to launch a mini comeback, but it was too little too late and the Frenchwoman served out to love to win her maiden Grand Slam title at her 47th attempt; a longevity record in women’s tennis. The women’s doubles went to eighth seeds Su-Wei Hseih (TPE) & Peng Shuai (CHN), who brushed past Ashleigh Barty & Casey Dellacqua in straight sets to enable Hseih to become the first player from Chinese Taipei ever to win a Grand Slam title. Their Australian opponents were playing in their second Slam final of the season and will break into the Top 20, while the winners both enter the Top 10. The record-breaking Bob & Mike Bryan etched their names even further into the record books by becoming the first team ever to hold all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold medals at the same time. At 35-years of age, the world #1s are more dominant than ever, and now have the chance to become the first team to record a calendar year Grand Slam at the US Open. Their final opponents Ivan Dodig (CRO) and Marcelo Melo (BRA) started their first Slam final strongly; taking the first set in a

It remains to be seen whether Wimbledon 2013 represents an anomaly or a seismic shift for tennis’ most celebrated players. With Murray having reached the final of the last four Grand Slams that he has participated in, few would disagree that his battles with Djokovic have taken over from the FedererNadal duels as the sport’s marquee attraction. Federer and Nadal will be keen to make amends for their poor performances in the coming months, as will the women’s top three of Williams, Azarenka and Sharapova. The victory for the Swiss player ends an incredible run of 26 consecutive junior Slams won by different girls and makes her the first player since Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in 2006 to win more than one Slam title. Bencic will next turn her attention to the European Junior Championships in Klosters, where she will attempt to become the first home player to win the girls’ title since Martina Hingis in 1994. Reigning Roland Garros champions also triumphed in the girls’ doubles, where Barbora Krejcikova & Katerina Siniakova (CZE) ousted Anhelina Kalinina (UKR) and Iryna Shymanovich (BLR) for the loss of just four games, while the boys doubles went to Aussie pair Nick Kyrgios & Thanasi Kokkinakis, 6-2 63 winners of Enzo Couacuad (FRA) & Stefano Napolitano (ITA). It is the second consecutive year that Kyrgios has lifted the trophy, having won last year with compatriot Andrew Harris. Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy continued his rapid rise by claiming the boys’ singles; just the second Italian ever to do so. The left-hander, who holds the distinction of having won European team titles at the 12, 14 and 16 & Under age groups and recently won his first ITF Pro Circuit title, claimed his first Junior Slam with a 7-5 76

European Junior Championships for Individuals and Teams Full information is now available about the forthcoming European championship events for individuals and teams, due to take place in the coming weeks. The European Junior Championships kick off three weeks of intense activity, with the event set to return to Pilzen (CZE, 14&U), Moscow (RUS, 16&U) and Klosters (SUI, 18&U) during the week of 22-28 July. The most prestigious title on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, the tournament once again boasts an exceptionally strong entry list. Last week’s Junior Wimbledon champions Belinda Bencic (SUI) and Gianluigi Quinzi (ITA) will be competing at the 18 & Under event, with virtually all eligible top players will be competing across the three age categories. The 12 & Under team competition, the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD will take place from 25-28 July (qualifying) and 8-11 August (finals). Russia are the defending champions in the both the boys’ and girls’ events which have attracted entries from 63 national teams in this, its seventh edition. The qualifying rounds of the 16 and 18 & Under Summer Cups competitions take place from 31 July - 2 August with the finals due to follow from 5-7

August (except the Girls 18 & Under finals, which will be played in September). 61 teams have entered the 16 & Under competition, which also serves as the European qualifying competition for the Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, the final rounds of which will be played in Mexico in September. A further 50 national teams will take part in the 18 & Under event. ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under Team in Italy and Denmark This year’s ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under Team recently completed a 5-week tour of Italy and Denmark. The Tour began on 30th May with a training camp held at the Sporting Club in Montecatini, where the team of 4 girls – Anastasiya Klymenko (UKR), Petia Arshinkova (BUL), Vera Lapko (BLR), Anastasia Detiuc (MDA) – and 4 boys Aleksandre Bakshi (GEO), Antreas Aravis (CYP), Kenneth Raisma (EST), Aliaksandr Halinko (BLR) - practiced together for three days. The training camp gave the opportunity for the players and their coaches Irena Chichmarova (BLR) and Goran Shevchenko (MKD) to get to know each other before competing at four of the top Tennis Europe and ITF Junior Tour events of the summer, kicking off at the Category 1 Montecatini event and followed by the prestigious Avvenire tournament in Milan. After these two 16 & Under Tennis Europe events, the Team moved on to Denmark and continued their tour at two ITF Grade 4 and 5 tournaments in Odense and Aarhus.

Cichova & Marketa Vondrousova 5-7 4-6. In the third week, the Team continued to Denmark to participate at the Grade 4 ITF Odense Cup tournament. Vera Lapko once again reached the quarters of the girls singles event losing to Australian Kimberly Birrell 6-2 5-7 0-6, while the boys Bakshi, Aravis and Raisma all reached the third round of their singles event. In the doubles tournament, Arshinkova & Klymenko reached the semis but lost to Aussies Hon/Birrell 6-4 2-6 6-10.

The first tournament had the feel of a ‘warm up’, as the players started to accomplish goals that were set during the training camp. All of the team members showed great desire to implement what they had learned and to develop new skills. Anastasiya Klymenko reached the quarter finals before losing to the Italian Francesca Brancato 2-6 5-7, while Detiuc & Lapko reached the doubles final before being edged to the title by Russian pair Polina Golubovskaya & Valeriya Yushchenko 4-6 6-4 8-10.

The final week of the Tour proved to be the most successful, with most of the players producing their best form at the Deloitte Junior Cup in Aarhus. Aleksandre Bakshi reached the final of the boys’ singles but lost to Christian Sigsgaard (DEN) 3-6 1-6. Anastasiia Klymenko beat team-mate Petia Arshinkova 5-7 6-3 6-4 in the semis but fell to American Angela Kulikov 46 2-6 in the championship match. The other players also made notable results in singles; Vera Lapko reached the quarters yet again, while Raisma and Halinko lost in the third round. In the doubles event, ITF/Tennis Europe Team members claimed both the boys’ and girls’ titles: Aliaksandr Halinko & Aleksandre Bakshi won the boys’ final over Danish players Johannes Ingildsen & Jonas Zacho Larsen 6-2 7-6(3). Petia Ashinkova & Anastasiya Klymenko once again illustrated their doubles talents to win the girls’ event, also against Danish opposition, beating Emma Haakansson and Julie Noe 6-2 6-3.

At the second tournament in Milan all of the players found their rhythm and began to show improved performance. Again, Anastasiya Klymenko showed her potential and after winning over her Team mate Anastasia Detiuc in quarters, reached the singles semi-final eventually losing to Anna Gabric (GER) 1-6 2-6. In the singles event Vera Lapko also reached the quarters but lost to home player Verena Hofer 4-6 26. In doubles event, Petia Arshinkova and Anastasiia Klymenko lost in the final to Czech pair Denisa

The team coaches, Goran Shevchenko and Irina Chichmarova were delighted with the players’ day by day improvement and the team spirit shown during the Tour. The Tour provided an opportunity for these players to compete at some of the best events in the world for 16 & Under players as well as the chance to compete at strong ITF 18 & Under tournaments. Aside from the practice, the high level of tennis and the possibility to create lasting friendships with players from around the world will surely help in their future tennis careers.

Beyond the Baseline... The International Tennis Federation has revealed the draw for next year’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas. First round ties will take place from 8-9 February 2014. The World Group ties are as follows: USA hosts Italy, Spain hosts Czech Republic, Slovakia hosts Germany, Australia hosts Russia. World Group II sees Canada host Serbia, Sweden hosts Poland, France hosts Switzerland and Argentina hosts Japan. The ITF has also confirmed that the 2013 final between Italy and Russia will be held on clay in Cagliari, Sardinia on 2-3 November. The British Lawn Tennis Association has announced a three-year partnership with Rado which will see the Swiss watch brand act as the ‘Official Timekeeper’ of some of the LTA’s biggest events, including the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club, the Aegon Classic at Edgbaston Priory and the Aegon International in Eastbourne. Rado also has a partnership with British #1 Andy Murray. The ITF has renewed its agreement with the Johan Cruyff Foundation to support Wheelchair Tennis. The foundation is set to extend its involvement by becoming a programme partner for the Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund and the ITF’s junior wheelchair tennis programmes. At the 2013 World Champions Dinner in Paris last month, the Philippe Chatrier Award was presented by the ITF to the All England Club in recognition of its contribution to tennis. France, Netherlands, USA and Great Britain were the big winners of the 2013 BNP Paribas World Team Cup event in Antalya recently. France beat Netherlands 2-0 to claim the men’s world wheelchair tennis title. Netherlands beat Great Britain 2-0 to take the women’s crown, while Great Britain beat Spain 2-1 in the juniors’ final. USA beat Israel 2-0 for the quad title. The ITF has launched a legal advisory service for junior tennis players, operating as part of the Junior Tennis School.

Following his surprisingly early loss at Wimbledon which ended a run of 522 weeks in the Top Four, Roger Federer is a late entry to clay court events in Gstaad and Hamburg later this month. The ATP has announced that the trophy for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals will be renamed in honour of late President Brad Drewett. Andy Murray’s Wimbledon victory was seen by an audience of 17.3 million people in the UK and had an audience share of 79.6%, according to the BBC. The figure made it the most-watched event of the year so far. 42-year old Belgian Dick Norman ended his 22-year playing career at the recent Top Shelf Open in the Netherlands. Twice-Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva, currently undergoing rehab following shoulder surgery, obtained her degree in international economic relations recently. Williams sisters Serena and Venus will play Monica Seles and Eugenie Bouchard in an exhibition match to mark the opening night of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on August 5th. Tennis played a significant role at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin, Turkey recently. The hosts won gold medals in both women’s events (Cagla Buyuycakçay beat reigning European 16 & Under Champion Sara Sorribes of Spain in the singles and teamed with Pemra Özgen to beat Italy’s Anastasia Grymalska & Federica di Sarra in doubles). Slovenia’s Blaz Rola took the men’s gold over Marsel Ilhan (TUR) but had to settle for silver in the doubles alongside Tomislav Ternar, losing to Mohamed Abid & Malek Jaziri of Tunisia. The next Mediterranean Games will be held in Tarragona, Spain, in 2017. The Spanish Tennis Federation has signed a partnership agreement with Air Europa. More than 6.6 million messages referencing Wimbledon were sent on Twitter during the championships, up from 2.5 million last year.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza will be out for the rest of the season after undergoing foot surgery.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under Sofya Zhuk has become the third Russian girl to hold the European 14 & Under #1 spot in the last two months, following big wins at 16 & Under events in Crema (Category 2) and Milano (Category 1). Currently six of the Top 10 (and ten of the Top 15) players are Russian. Russians also feature prominently on the boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; list, where Artem Dubrivnyy clings to the #1 spot ahead of Les Petits As champion Samuele Ramazzotti of Italy.
