No. 17 Wildcats Finish Second at <i>Dallas Morning News</i> Swimming & Diving Classic

DALLAS -- No. 17 Northwestern defeated a pair of ranked squads to finish second at the Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic Saturday night in Dallas.
Northwestern finished with 331 points, 11.5 points shy of No. 7 Florida in the meet. The Wildcats led host and third-place Southern Methodist by 37 points. No. 14 Florida State finished fourth, No. 19 Notre Dame was fifth and Washington rounded out the field in sixth.
Junior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), junior Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), sophomore Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and sophomore David Kormushoff (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) took first in Saturday's initial event, swimming an NCAA `B' time of 1:28.71 to win the 200 medley relay.
Freshman Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) then took second in the 500 free, swimming a 4:28.69. Classmate Gavin D'Amico (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) took ninth in the event with a 4:36.58.
Alexandrov followed with a win in the 200 breast, swimming a `B' standard 1:58.70. Kormushoff took second in the consolation final to earn five points with a 2:03.73.
Grevers then completed his sweep of the backstroke events at the meet, swimming an NCAA `A' standard and breaking the nine-year-old pool and meet records with a 1:43.66 in the 200 back.
Freshman Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) earned four points for the 'Cats with a 1:51.33 in the consolation final of the 200 back.
Freshman diver Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) took fourth on the 3-meter board with a score of 264.15, finishing one spot ahead of Florida's diver to pull NU to within 6.5 points of the No. 7 Gators with four events to go in the meet.
Grevers and Bubolz gave the 'Cats the lead in the very next event. Grevers won the 100 free with an NCAA `B' time of 43.68, while Bubolz captured the consolation final with a time of 45.41, catapulting Northwestern into a 1.5 point advantage over Florida, 278-276.5.
The Gators wrestled the lead right back by 6.5 points in the 200 fly. Nilsson took third for Northwestern, while sophomore Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) was 10th with a 1:54.14.
Alexandrov then swam an NCAA `B' standard 1:48.93 in the 200 IM, but came in second by just .18 seconds to Florida's Lucas Salatta. Beckman took second in the consolation final to earn five points.
The Wildcats concluded the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay. Ehret, Bubolz, Kormushoff and Nilsson comprised the relay.
Northwestern returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday, January 20, against the Irish at the Norris Aquatics Center.
