Antoine Griezmann keen on Manchester United switch

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Express), Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann is open to a move to Manchester United.

The 29-year-old played a key role in France’s World Cup triumph in 2018. A star at Atletico Madrid, he made a big-money move to Barcelona the following year.

As with a number of the Catalan giants’ big-money signings, the Frenchman has struggled to make an impact at the Nou Camp.

According to the report, the Frenchman is falling out of favour at the Nou Camp and is growing increasingly frustrated with manager Quique Setien. It is understandable given that he has completed 90 minutes just five times in 17 matches under the manager.

He has of late been forced to sit on the bench, playing just ten minutes in two games including the crunch match against former side Atletico Madrid.

With the game stuck at 2-2, the Barcelona boss brought on the Frenchman with just over a minute remaining. The draw could prove costly as Real Madrid leapfrogged their fierce rivals to the top of La Liga.

The move also drew flak from Griezmann’s family. His brother later tweeted about the same, displaying his dismay.

United are in the market for a striker and Griezmann is someone who is proven at the highest level. The major problem could be the player’s valuation.

Barcelona paid around £107million for the Frenchman last summer. Already 29, it will represent a significant investment by United for a player who will soon enter his 30s.

There is no doubting his ability but United will do well to steer clear of Griezmann. The transfer brings uncomfortable memories of the blunder we made in signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.

Although a no-brainer on paper, it has proved to be anything but a disaster. History could be repeating itself with the Frenchman.
