The 2010 world champions crashed out of the last-16 stage on Sunday as they lost on penalties to tournament hosts Russia in Moscow.

And most of the blame fell on the shoulders of Manchester United No.1 De Gea, who was slammed by fans and made the scapegoat by the angry Spanish press after the stunning result.

De Gea is undoubtedly the Premier League’s best goalkeeper and arguably the best in the world, but his form suffered in Russia.

He never recovered from his howler against Cristiano Ronaldo in the group stages, and he ended the World Cup with a dismal record of six goals conceded from seven shots against him – saving just one.

And the goalkeeper hit back at his critics with a post on social media on Monday.

The Twitter post read: "To whom supported, suffered and criticised us with respect, thanks. We're f***** but we'll get up again and never give up."

Spain’s second-round exit was the culmination of a disappointing campaign that began in chaotic fashion with the sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui just two days before their opening fixture.

They featured in a compelling 3-3 draw with Portugal in their opening group game but then laboured to a 1-0 victory over Iran and were held 2-2 by Morocco.

Spain took an early lead against Russia in Moscow but were pegged back to 1-1 and eventually beaten 4-3 in a shoot-out.

Midfielder Koke, who missed his spot-kick, wrote on Twitter: "One of the hardest days of my career, but football is like that and I will continue to fight to get the successes.

"I appreciate the support, I'm sure this will make me stronger. It is time to reflect and look forward to the future with enthusiasm. For us and you, we will return."
