Former England goalkeeper Ben Foster has confirmed he will leave Watford at the end of the season after the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

The 39-year-old rejoined Watford from West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2018 but will not be staying on as the club rebuild for life back in the Championship.

Foster announced his decision on his Twitter account, posting: “The ups, downs, good, bad and ugly… it’s all part of the journey!

“My time at Watford is up, but a huge thanks for all the support and love I’ve received from fans, players and staff in the six years with the club, it’s been a blast!

“Looking forward to what next season will bring.”

Foster began his professional career at Stoke City and moved to Manchester United in July 2005. He was subsequently loaned out for two seasons to Watford.

Spells at Birmingham City and West Brom followed before Foster returned to Watford in 2018. Foster has also earned eight England caps and was a member of the 2014 World Cup squad.

Foster has made 26 league appearances for Watford this season, keeping four clean sheets. He played his last match as a Watford player at Vicarage Road on Sunday when Leicester ran out 5-1 winners.

Watford were relegated to the Championship after losing 1-0 at Crystal Palace on May 7 with head coach Roy Hodgson set to retire from management at the end of the season after a 46-year coaching career.

Hodgson will take charge of the club’s final league game at Chelsea on Sunday with former Forest Green Rovers head coach Rob Edwards named as his successor.
