Thursday Transfer Gist: United bid £20m for Juventus Star, Nigerian Striker Joins Schalke + More!

  • Real Madrid have ended speculation about Xabi Alonso’s future by tying him to a new contract. The 32-year-old midfielder’s deal expired at the end of the current season and had been linked with a move to Chelsea and a return to former club Liverpool, but Madrid announced on Wednesday that he has penned a two-year extension.
  • Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, 31, is on the brink of a £6m move to Toronto FC – a Major League Soccer record – and is likely to be loaned back to Spurs until March. [Daily Telegraph]
  • Manchester United are ready to bid £20m for Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio, 27, despite the Italian wanting to remain in Turin. [Daily Express]
  • Juventus will look to sign Tottenham winger Erik Lamela, 21, in the summer, although Spurs’ expectation of recouping most of the £30m paid for the Argentine has deterred Inter Milan. [Daily Mail]
  • Tottenham will also consider a cash-plus-player deal for Lamela, with Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic, 30, potentially part of the deal. [Daily Mirror]
  • Bundesliga club Schalke 04 has announced that it has reached an agreement with rivals Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer of Germany international Sidney Sam, 25. The four  year contract will start running with effect from July 1, 2014, meaning he will complete this season at Bayer Leverkusen before heading to the Royal Blues.
  • Arsenal and Liverpool are targeting Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate, 24, with his agent declaring he has been in talks with both Premier League sides. [Daily Star]
  • Arsenal will have to pay a loan fee of £1.7m for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, 21, although they would also spend big if the right target became available. Mario Mandzukic, Diego Costa, Jackson Martinez, Edin Dzeko and Wayne Rooney are among the club’s preferred options. [Daily Mail]
  • Italy’s number one sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport says Chievo Verona and Parma have not given up in their chase for Victor Obinna, striker currently representing Lokomotiv Moscow. It had earlier been reported that Celta Vigo were in pole position to capture the signature of the 26 year old.
  • David Moyes faces a fight to convince several senior Manchester United players of his credentials following three consecutive defeats for the first time in 13 years. [The Guardian]
  • Nicklas Bendtner has given Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger a boost after recovering from his ankle injury quicker than expected. The Denmark striker, 25, could return to training within a few days. [Metro]
  • Fulham have not made an enquiry or official offer for Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott, 31. The England international has also been linked with West Ham and Turkish club Besiktas. [Sky Sports]
  • New Middlesbrough recruit, Nigeria international Kenneth Omeruo has been handed the number 25 jersey for the remainder of the season. The 20 – year – old formalized his loan switch to the championship side late on Monday though it was made official by the club today.
  • Lille club president Michel Seydoux has warned off Premier League interest for Ivorian attacker Salomon Kalou, 28, by saying an 87m euro bid for him would “maybe” be considered. [Daily Star]

  • Super Eagles and Chelsea youngster Kenneth Omeruo is close to a Middlesbrough transfer as he has emerged as a strong contender to become Aitor Karanka’s first signing of the January transfer window.
  • Bayern Munich have announced the capture of Dortmund’s polish hitman Robert Lewandowski. The 25 year old has signed a 5 year pre-contract and will join the Bavarians in July.
  • Porto’s Colombian striker Jackson Martinez, 27, has revealed that he grew up supporting Arsenal and says he would love to join his boyhood club this month. [Metro]
  • Manchester United target Fabio Coentrao has been told he can leave Real Madrid for £12m. The Old Trafford club missed out on the 25-year-old Portuguese international last summer. [Sunday Mirror]

  • Chelsea are ready to make a £30m bid for Wayne Rooney, 28, if there are any problems with the Manchester United striker’s proposed new contract talks. [Mail on Sunday]
  • Out-of-favour Manchester United forward Wilfried Zaha, 21, is being targeted by former Old Trafford hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for a loan move to Cardiff City. [Sunday Mirror]

  • Rafa Benitez would like to take 25-year-old out of favour Spaniard Juan Mata on loan but Chelsea are unlikely to agree to such a request. [Mail on Sunday]
  • Chelsea are also considering a move for the Nantes and Senegal centre-half Papy Djilobodji, 25.[Daily Star Sunday]
  • Tottenham want Juventus strikers Mirko Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella, both 30, to replace Toronto-bound Jermain Defoe.
  • Chelsea have had a bid for Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin rejected. According to reports in the Times the Blues tabled £13million for the Colombian, with the Nerazzurri wanting a further £2million if they’re to part with their man.
  • Hull City and Super Eagles forward, Sone Aluko has committed his future to the English Premiership club by signing a new two-and-a-half year contract.
  • Gary Cahill is set to be offered a new contract by Chelsea. The England defender still has three years left on his current deal but manager Jose Mourinho has been hugely impressed by the form of the 28-year-old this season.
  • Finally, Manuel Pellegrini has warned Stevan Jovetic that he has until the end of the season to prove he isn’t a £22million crock. The striker has made just five appearances for Manchester City since his summer arrival from Fiorentina and hasn’t been seen since lasting only 10 minutes of the Capital One Cup victory at Newcastle in October.

Paul Pogba Wins Golden Boy Award As Omeruo Fails To Make Top 10

Authoritative Turin based sports daily Tuttosport has announced the winner of the golden boy for the year ended 2013.

The eleventh edition of the award which is chosen by some of the top European journalists went to Paul Pogba of Juventus.

Paul Pogba scored 256 points ahead of Romelu Lukaku (Everton), who collected 129 points.

In third place is Schalke 04 youngster Julian Draxler (120 votes) while Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane and Marquinhos (PSG) occupied the fourth and fifth position respectively.

Nigeria international central defender Kenneth Omeruo was not listed in the top 10.

  • Tottenham are refusing to hold further talks with Real Madrid until the Spanish giants substantially increase their offer of more than £80m for 24-year-old forward Gareth Bale.
  • Arsenal are close to landing their second signing of the summer with 19-year-old defender Matthias Ginter on the verge of a £6m move from Bundesliga side Frieburg.
  • Crystal Palace are ahead of Fulham and Newcastle in their pursuit of Aston Villa striker Darren Bent. The 29-year-old scored six goals in 23 appearances last term.
