Finally back working again after my hard drive failed. Started this pic a few weeks ago, but just got to finish it now. Anyway, this was my first pencil sketch of Man Utd (at least for now) keeper David De Gea

degealine

I chose to to do a sort of caricature, but not too cartoony. I imagined how De Gea might look to opposition strikers, so I gave him some extra arms and hands…

Then I added loads of footballs raining down on the tiny little goal…

Used a fairly limited palette of colours, as there’s so much going on in the picture already.

Got the OK to post this, so here’s a sneek peek at the artwork for the History Page in the matchday programme for the up-coming Euro qualifier England v Lithuania at Wembley on Friday March 27.

sc1

The history page describes the Paul Scholes hat-trick for England v Poland in 1999. So it was a case of arranging the Scholes drawings (from previous post) to create an interesting design.

I also had to leave enough room for the text panels, and make sure all the words fitted in!

sc2

Hopefully the combination of text and images leads your eyes down the page, so you follow the panels in the right order…

Last thing was to choose colours that worked OK with all the red on Scholes kit, and would also add variety to the backgrounds.

Recently finished a commission from Haymarket for the matchday programme for the upcoming England v Lithuania international at Wembley. These are working drawings of various bits of the illustration. First a (young) Paul Scholes celebration…

then a smiley portrait,

scholes2

a couple of action pics, beating the keeper…

scholes3

and a header

scholes4

and finally a well earned cuddle with Kevin Keegan!

I’ll post up the finished artwork as soon as I get the OK.

Been working on this pic of Cuthbert Ottaway. Who? Well, Cuthbert captained England in the world’s first ever football international (against Scotland) in 1872. Described as a nimble forward, he also played in 3 FA Cup Finals, and died aged just 27 from pneumonia in 1878.

Next comes England’s current football captain…

And here they are side by side. Interesting to compare the kits. I like Cuthbert’s cap, and his knickerbockers look more stylish than Wayne’s shorts. Wayne’s also covered in logos, which looks naff, but I’m not keen on Cutbert’s boots and that lace up ball!

**Historical info came from an excellent Cuthbert Ottaway pdf by Michael Southwick.

Lots of interest in the new ROY KEANE biography, but here’s an illustration of Roy in action for the Republic of Ireland in 1994. This pic was originally printed as a pull-out poster in SOCCERSTARS MAGAZINE just before Ireland set off to the WORLD CUP in the USA, under under manager JACK CHARLTON.

I used pens, brushes and watercolour inks on this illustration, no digital messing about in those days!

k2

Roy looks so young and fresh faced here, he probably couldn’t have grown a beard either!

Idea here was to capture the passion & excitement of RADAMEL FALCAO celebrating his ever first Premier League goal for Man Utd against Everton today.

I used pencils, charcoal & pastels, to get the rich colours and textured shading…

and emphasized Radamel’s flowing locks, and dramatic expression.

Same idea and format here as the previous Bobby Moore print. Often portrayed as an assassin, but there’s much more to Nobby Stiles‘ personality and character.

This is the main portrait image, from a United game at Old Trafford in the mid 60’s. What a fantastic expression! Nobby obviously had (and hopefully still has!) a great sense of fun, even during a game.

Next come 3 smaller images in flat colour style. First is Nobby’s familiar gap-toothed smile. The sideburns indicate late 60’s period

stiles3

This one features Nobby’s hard man stare, while doing up his bootlaces. Someone’s in for a kicking!

stiles4

and this pic shows Nobby in civvies, wearing his thick rimmed glasses, button down collars, and narrow tie.

And here’s the finished print! (**Available at my ETSY PRINTSHOP)

Well under the grip of World Cup fever I’m afraid. Begun a series of art prints – Copa do Mundo. Start with Wayne Rooney. First thought was to create dynamic image… Rooney’s in all white England kit, so needed a strong background for contrast

rooney1

Always loved loose blotchy watercolour, so used that here to add drama to the sky. Crimson sun contrasts with the white kit. Added beach football scene and Sugarloaf mountain to reflect out Braziiian world cup theme.
