It’s not everyday that a club has a chance to sign a world-class striker for a cut price and Chelsea FC had that chance in Radamel Falcao. The Blues added the Colombian striker this summer and he made his debut against PSG in the International Champions Cup during the club’s preseason tour. He came on in the 70th minute as a replacement for Diego Costa and jumped right in to the action.

Chelsea fans seemed to give him positive reviews for his performance and he stepped up to take the club’s first penalty in the shootout. He buried it much like he did in the Copa America for Colombia and showed that he still has confidence in front of goal. That was something that former Chelsea FC striker Fernando Torres lacked and was rarely trusted to take a penalty.

As far as why the Blues signed Falcao, aside from the obvious part about him being a world-class player and one of the best strikers in the world at his peak, it reportedly had something to do with John Terry and Gary Cahill’s recommendations. If you recall in 2013, which many of you may not because you have blocked it from your memory, the Blues faced off against Falcao and Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

The Blues, being Champions League winners, were favored to win but were instead put to the sword by El Tigre as he ran rampant. He banged in three goals of sublime quality and made Gary Cahill and the Chelsea FC defense look foolish.

Cahill recalled his experience against Falcao and said, as quoted in the Daily Mail, ” I just remember he was non-stop. He was always pulling you left to right, coming short and running in behind. Even when he wasn’t getting a lot of the ball, off the ball I was having to do a lot of running, chasing him and he was moving me around every two minutes.”

Cahill continued and said, “He made that game tough and there was a lot of movement people didn’t see because the ball was elsewhere. I had to always be on my toes. We got well and truly beaten in that game and he was fantastic. When he settles in with the great squad we have now, I’m sure he will be fine.”

Falcao may or may not be the player he once was but Chelsea FC are taking a low-risk, high-reward look at the striker. They have two other great options at the position in Loic Remy and Diego Costa and if Falcao pans out then it will be great strength for the team. Cahill and Terry know a thing or two about dangerous strikers and if they think he’s still got it then he just might.
