This paper investigates the specificity of a modern capitalist economy as a complex system. This investigation is based on a review of the literature to understand complexity in the physical and biological worlds, to learn the bases of complexity and self-organization, and to locate the tools used to identify and measure them. An economy has different layers and levels of organization, based upon human beings, agents that think, have intentions and change all the time. This paper presents a new model to replicate the workings of a capitalist economy that endogenizes the introduction of innovations and institutional change, and it runs a simulation. The analysis of those results indicate that a modern capitalist economy is a complex system, and that this complex system changes its level of self-organization over time. This finding highlights the peculiarity of a capitalist economy vis-a-vis other complex systems.

Marx's Notebooks prepared in 1868 and 1869 (excerpts from The Economist and The Money Market Review) are an investigation on the crisis of 1866. Beyond a broad study of that crisis, they are an investigation of an emerging transformation of capitalism. They focus on leading industrial sectors (railways), financial innovations (such as limited liability firms and new types of shares and titles), and follow political measures undertaken in response to that crisis - dynamic new features of a system in its drive for survival. Those Notebooks might be material for a deep revision of his unfinished manuscripts for Volume III.

Abstract This paper presents Notebook B113, one of Marx's unpublished manuscripts, and suggests its importance for highlighting the monetary and financial issues which Marx was investigating after 1867. The contents of this notebook reveal a systematic effort to investigate new features of financial markets and institutions which were spreading throughout Europe during the 1860's, and which were put in sharp evidence by the events that surrounded the Overend, Gurney crisis in England, in 1866. Besides offering valuable ...

This paper presents the last book that Marx excerpted in his life: La Physique Moderne, written by Hospitalier and published in 1882. This last Notebook (B156, in the IISG’s archives) contains hints of other issues that he was researching in his last years, especially societies at the periphery. This combination of issues - an emerging technological revolution and societies at the periphery - may contribute to a better understanding of connections between technological revolutions and the centre-periphery divide. Technological revolutions, sources of new starting points, have been shaping and reshaping the structure of that divide, its nature and structure.

This paper presents the last book that Marx excerpted in his life: La Physique Moderne, written by Hospitalier and published in 1882. This last Notebook (B156, in the IISG’s archives) contains hints of other issues that he was researching in his last years, es-pecially societies at the periphery. The paper addresses the influence of Karl Marx’s empirical researches about the crises of 1857 and 1866 on his writing process of Capital and, on the other hand, the impact of this process on Marx’s own analysis of economic crises.

" You mon't see any country " : educational policies and economic development prospects in Brasil Abstract: The paper discusses the main ideas for the economic development in Brazil during the 20th century and their effects on educational policies. Through the developmentalism years the supply of public schools increased, while a decline is observable since the 1990's. The paper demonstrates how the municipalization of public schools has endangered the universalization of access to education and its quality. This process begun during the Dictatorship of 1964 and has not changed after democratization.

This article proposes a network model to replicate the behaviour of the profit rate in the long run. Specifically, it accounts for the results of an empirical investigation of the profit rate in the US, which show that it has fractal properties and its complexity changes over time. The starting point of the model is Marx’s insights on the interplay between the tendency of the rate to fall and its countertendencies. It combines these insights with the persistent generation of new commodities – inventions – and a specific set of new branches of production that triggers technological revolutions. A simulation running this network model successfully replicates historical features of the system.

There are new reasons for revisiting Marx’s elaboration on the rate of profit because contemporary debates provide findings from the MEGA Project, long-term data on the rate of profit, and tools for dealing with complexity and non-equilibrium systems. This article proposes that the interplay between the tendency and the countertendencies of the rate of profit to fall can be translated into a simple system of equations, one based on each chapter of Section Three of Capital—as if Marx sought to mathematically formalise his insights. This article reviews previous debates, presents data and runs a simulation model, showing that the rate of profit behaves as fractals.

This paper suggests that Marx’s Notebooks B108, B109 and B113 constitute, in themselves, a systematic investigation on the crisis of 1866. Prepared between 1868 and 1869, one may also read these Notebooks as notes that complete an analysis of a sequence of capitalist crises – 1847, 1857, and 1866.
This paper also suggests that Marx recurrently stressed the changing nature of capitalist crises – crises have different causes and unfold in different ways. He was dealing with a capitalist system undergoing fast and profound changes, as he noted in various places. This is why, since his very first comments on the crisis of 1866, Marx highlighted what was new: the crisis now assumed “[…] a predominantly financial character” (MEGA² II/5, p. 540).

inserção subordinada do Brasil no mercado global.
o Modernismo.
