Does anyone know if Sheilla Castro, the Brazilian two-time Olympic Gold medalist, is retiring or merely taking some time off?
I saw an article on Volleymob earlier this month where she said: "... I haven’t thought about my career yet. I haven’t decided about my future. I had offers, but I don’t know if I will return to volleyball.” (https://volleymob.com/dont-know-will-return-volleyball-sheilla-castro/). That sounds like she is hinting at retirement, although I don't seem to recall if there is any official confirmation of that in the press (though I might be wrong, haven't been following that closely with the Brazilians lately).
Sheilla does have a stellar career with stints at Vakifbank and other good teams. And at 34, she may be past her prime, although health and physique permitting, she might have a season or two left in her if she does decide to return to play.

I think she would still play, but only in Brazil. She did get offers to go overseas but she declined.
In Brazil only a very few clubs (Osasco, Sesc and maybe Praia Clube and Minas) can offer her a reasonable salary. But they have a ranking of players and Sheila is ranked higher at 7 points, I think each club can have only 2 or 3 players ranked with 7 points. Sheila still can play, but once they can have only 2/3 7 point player, the top teams choose to go with younger or more impactful players such as Fabiola, Gabi, Fe Garay, Fabiana, Jaque etc, which makes very hard for Sheila to find a club.

Roberta will probably be Brazil`s main setter for this new Olympic Cycle, but I heard that Dani Lins wants to get back in shape after giving birth and she wants to go to the World Championship. So it will be either Dani Lins or Fabiola as backups ( or even starters).
And I also heard Ze Roberto wants Jaqueline in the World Championship.
Ze Roberto loves older players. I will not be surprised if he invites Sheila back.

Is Sheila still ranked at 7 points? I thought I read recently that she and Jaque weren't ranked that high any longer (I don't remember where).

U r right, I found this on WorldofVolley and starting next season Sheilla and Jaqueline will not longer be considered 7 point player. In the next season, all clubs from Women's Superliga can have at most two players who are worth seven points, in addition to a maximum of two foreigners. In the select group, there are eight players, without much change compared to the previous Superleague. Danielle Lins, Fabiana Claudino, Thaisa Menezes Pallesi, Fe Garay, Gabriela Braga Guimaraes, Natalia Zilio Pereira and Tandara Alves Caixeta are ranked with seven points. The changes are due to the exit of Jaqueline Carvalho Endres and Sheilla Castro, and the entrance of Tiffany Pereira Da Abreu. www.worldofvolley.com/News/Latest_news/Brazil/95748/bra-w-cbv-announced-rules-of-20182019-players-ranking.html

She's even older than Sheilla, but I suppose if she is able to stay in form and avoid injuries , sure, even at that age she can still compete at the top level.

I don`t think so, she`s 34 already, but I think she could still be a good club player. yes Fabiola is 35, but I think setters can play a little longer, Fofão was 38 in Beijing.

True, setters can have it a little easier in some cases. Still, I think the physical demands on setters should not be underestimated, especially on the NT-level. They have to keep in sync with the hitters and the overall quick tempo of the team, that will be increasingly hard to do as their bodies age and wears down. I think those who adjust their play as they get older and place greater emphasis on minimizing injuries and modifying their workouts, can have a longer career. I mean, tennis is another sport that places great demand on your body, yet here Federer is still winning majors at 36, the key to his success was how he changed his play and workout routine as he got older.

I couldn't either before I moved abroad and started watching international volleyball. Discovering their higher level of play was fun and exciting.

Does anyone know if Sheilla Castro, the Brazilian two-time Olympic Gold medalist, is retiring or merely taking some time off? She hasn't played in well over an year I think....that is a long time... she is basically done, no motivation whatsoever to step on the court, although Zé Roberto did say in an interview that he hopes to have her back in the team.... so it's impossible to venture a confident guess Fernanda Garay, on the other hand, who is more important to the team than Sheilla, called it quits this week....which is a HUGE blow: volleymob.com/coach-announces-fernanda-garays-intentions-to-retire-from-brazils-nt/
