Sergio Busquets, 2010 FIFA World Cup champion with Spain, retired from Spanish national football team, the country's football body RFEF said on Friday.

After his fourth FIFA World Cup, veteran midfielder and Spain captain decided to call-it-a-day for Spain, at the age of 34.

"Sergio Busquets is an iconic figure in Spanish football, an exemplary athlete, an impeccable professional and an indisputable leader," the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, said.

Busquets, who bagged the 2010 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2012 with Spain, scored twice in his 143 appearances.
