10 things you need to know about new Roma signing Clement Grenier

Want to know more about Roma’s latest signing? Here’s some of the key details you need to know about French midfielder Clement Grenier…

1. Clement Grenier was born on 7 January 1991 in Annonay, a small town in the south-east of France, between Lyon and Valence. He is 26 years old.

2. Grenier began playing football for the local junior side in Annonay, attracting the attention of Olympique Lyonnais scouts when he was just nine. He joined their youth setup when he was 11.

3. At Les Gones he progressed through the academy ranks, eventually being promoted to the B side – where he played a season in the amateur ranks. He made his debut for the first team in September 2009, when he was still just 18.

4. Grenier has represented France at every youth level from Under-16 to Under-21. He won the Under-19 European Championships with Les Bleus in 2009, alongside the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Cedric Bakambu and Alexandre Lacazette.

5. Grenier has made 152 appearances for Lyon in all competitions, scoring 18 goals. In that time he has demonstrated his versatility: playing on the right-side of midfield, in a No. 10 role or as a more conventional central midfielder. He is equally comfortable on his left or right foot and is renowned for his passing and creativity.

6. Grenier is regarded as something of a set-piece specialist, having earned comparisons with another ex-Lyon player, Juninho Pernambucano, after scoring a number of brilliant goals from dead-ball situations. "I took a lot longer than him to get [as good as that]," Juninho once remarked.

7. Grenier is a full France international, with five caps in total. He made his debut under Didier Deschamps in a friendly against Uruguay in June 2013. He was named in the squad for the 2014 World Cup, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

8. Grenier has two club trophies to his name: the 2012 Coupe de France, and the 2012 Trophee des Championes. The midfielder came on as a substitute as Lyon beat unlikely finalists Quevilly 1-0 in the French Cup final, before sitting on the bench as Lyon beat league champions Montpellier on penalties in the traditional season curtain-raiser a few months later.

9. Grenier was awarded the No. 22 shirt at Lyon when he made his first appearances for the Lyon ‘B’ side, retaining that number as he made his senior debut. Ahead of the 2011-12 season he was handed the No. 7 shirt - one previously worn by another player who would go on to play for Roma, Michel Bastos (who transferred to No. 11).

Grenier retained the shirt until his exit. In his appearances for France he usually wore No. 13 or No. 22.

10. Grenier is active on social media: You can follow him on Twitter @clemgrenier, on Instagram @clementgrenier7, and on Facebook at @clementgrenierofficiel.
