The U.S. lost out on its bid for the 2022 World Cup, but that didn't stop it from hosting high-level international soccer.

After some uncertainty around the event stemming from the recent FIFA scandal, the Copa America Centenario 2016 was given the green light. And the Valley will host this preeminent South American tournament.

The Local Organizing Committee along with the North and South American confederations (CONCACAF and CONMEBOL) announced Thursday that University of Phoenix Stadium will host Copa America matches in the June 2016 tournament.

The Copa America traditionally featured the top teams from South America, but for a special 100-year anniversary, the tournament will be played on U.S. soil and include CONCACAF teams like the U.S. and Mexico.

Valley scores success with Gold Cup sellout, eyes 2016 Copa America

The Valley was one of 10 markets to get named a host. In all, 24 cities made bids to host this event. Boston, Chicago, Houston, Pasadena (Rose Bowl), New York (MetLife Stadium), Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco (Levi's Stadium) and Seattle were also selected as hosts.

“These 10 cities and venues will provide a fantastic setting for fans across the world to attend Copa America Centenario and allow them to see the amazing passion for soccer in the United States,” U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said in a statement. “The participating teams and fans will be treated to a first-class environment in each city and stadium, adding to the world-class talent that will be competing on the field. We are looking forward to working closely with all of the cities and venues in hosting this prestigious event and creating an extraordinary experience for fans.”

This tournament will potentially bring top international stars like Argentina's Lionel Messi, Brazil's Neymar and Colombia's James Rodriguez to play competitive matches in the Valley.
