Ivan Rakitic scored the winning penalty for Croatia on Sunday night as they beat Denmark in a shoot-out to book their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The two teams played out a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and could not be separated in extra-time with Luka Modric seeing a penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

The game then headed into a shoot-out with both goalkeepers impressing. Danijel Subašić saved from Christian Eriksen, Nicolai Jorgensen and Lasse Schöne while Schmeichel denied Milan Badelj and Josip Pivarić.

All of which left Rakitic with the chance to win it for Croatia and he duly obliged as he sent Schmeichel the wrong way to win 3-2 on penalties.

The result means Croatia are into the last eight of the tournament and they will play Russia on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.
