David Hockney (b. 1937)
His studio and home, Notting Hill Gate, London
5 July 1977
Often referred to now as ‘Britain’s greatest living artist’, Hockney is a painter, printmaker, illustrator, stage designer and photographer.
‘He is an excellent photographer, and frequently makes photos using a picture within a picture’, noted Schwartz. ‘I decided to mimic that idea, photographing him with a portrait he had done of his parents, standing in front of a self-portrait. I asked him if he could wear the same [blue and green striped] shirt as he’s wearing in the painting.’ And so he changed, after a rummage through the laundry.
