«KYIV, NOT KIEV»: UKRAINIANS CALL FOOTBALLER SERGIO RAMOS TO CHANGE VICTORIOUS TATTOO ON HIS LEG

Ukrainian football fans are launching a worldwide campaign to restore historical justice on the foot of the great football player Sergio Ramos, asking him to change a tattoo with the wrong inscription «Kiev» to the correct «Kyiv».

Spaniard Sergio Ramos is, without a doubt, a great footballer. Multiple Spanish champion, Spanish Cup and Super Cup winner, FIFA Club World Cup winner, European Champion and World Cup winner with the Spanish national team, captain of the Spanish national team, the best goal-scoring defender in the history of national teams, appearing ten times in the FIFA FIFPro World XI, and the holder of, perhaps, the longest list of achievements in the world's history of football.

Sergio Ramos is also a four-time winner of the world's most prestigious football tournament, the UEFA Champions League.

The last time when Ramos received the Champions League cup was with Real Madrid in Kyiv in 2018. Exactly after this final in Ukraine’s capital, this superb player made a famous tattoo on his leg. Ramos inscribed the winning info on the back of the shin: «Kiev 2018».

Unfortunately, such a city as «Kiev» does not exist. The name of Ukraine's capital is spelled Kyiv in English. Because that is exactly what the city is called in the Ukrainian language, which is the official, state language in Ukraine. «Kiev» is the Russian spelling of the name of Ukraine’s capital. «Kiev» was the name imposed on Ukrainians by the Soviet Union, which was destroying the Ukrainian language in all areas of Ukrainians’ public life for decades.

With the collapse of the totalitarian Soviet Union, Ukrainians gained an independent state and their own capital with its own name — Kyiv.

It is fundamental and essential for Ukrainians, which is why the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has even launched the #KyivNotKiev and #CorrectUA initiatives.

Since the campaign, the name «Kyiv» not «Kiev» started to be used by dozens of major world media, including the BBC, The Guardian, Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, The Washington Post, Financial Times, The Economist, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times, and other foreign English-language media.

In June 2019, at the request of the U.S. Department of State, the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA, and Ukrainian organizations in the United States, the name «Kyiv» was officially approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names as the only correct name, which resulted in the entire federal government of the United States starting to use the new name.

Since the start of the campaign, dozens of airports and airlines have switched to using the name Kyiv, even before the International Air Transport Association officially adopted the new name. At the end of June 2020, Facebook agreed to transliterate Kyiv’s name from the Ukrainian language. On September 16, 2020, the English-language Wikipedia changed the article’s title about Ukraine’s capital from «Kiev» to «Kyiv».

We urge the great football player Sergio Ramos to follow the foremost practices of the leading world media, airlines, international organizations, and social networks, and change the «Kiev» spelling on his leg tattoo to «Kyiv».

Ukrainians will be extremely grateful! They won't even hold grudges against Sergio Ramos for the last two goals in Ukraine’s national team goalposts, which he scored in September at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano in Madrid.

«KYIV, NOT KIEV»: УКРАЇНЦІ ЗАКЛИКАЮТЬ ФУТБОЛІСТА СЕРХІО РАМОСА ЗМІНИТИ ПЕРЕМОЖНЕ ТАТУ НА ЙОГО НОЗІ

Українські футбольні вболівальники розпочинають всесвітню кампанію за повернення історичної справедливості на ногу великого футболіста Серхіо Рамоса і просять його перебити тату з неправильним написом «Kiev» на правильне «Kyiv».

Іспанець Серхіо Рамос – без сумніву великий футболіст. Багаторазовий чемпіон Іспанії, володар Кубка та Суперкубка Іспанії, переможець Клубного чемпіонату світу, Чемпіон світу та Європи у складі збірної Іспанії, капітан збірної Іспанії, найкращий бомбардир в історії національних збірних серед захисників, десятиразовий член Збірної Світу ФІФА, можливо, Серхіо Рамос – також володар найдовшого переліку досягнень та рекордів у світі футболу.

Також Серхіо Рамос – чотириразовий переможець найпрестижнішого футбольного турніру світу – Ліги Чемпіонів УЄФА.

Востаннє кубок Ліги Чемпіонів Рамос отримував з Мадридським Реалом у Києві у 2018 році. І саме після фіналу в столиці України цей феєричний гравець зробив знамените татуювання на нозі. Рамос наніс на задню поверхню гомілки переможну інформацію: «Kiev 2018».

Однак, на жаль, такого міста як «Kiev» не існує. Столиця України – Kyiv. Бо саме так називається місто українською мовою, яка є державною в Україні. Kiev – це російське написання назви української столиці. Саме назву Kiev нав'язував українцям Радянський Союз, десятиріччями знищуючи українську мову в усіх сферах суспільного життя українців.

З розвалом тоталітарного Радянського Союзу українці отримали незалежну державу та власну столицю з власною українською назвою «Київ» та її міжнародним відповідником — «Kyiv».

Для українців це принципові і важливі речі, саме тому українське Міністерство закордонних справ навіть запустило ініціативу #KyivNotKiev та #CorrectUA.

Після початку кампанії назву «Kyiv» замість «Kiev» почали використовувати десятки головних світових видань, в тому числі BBC, The Guardian, Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, The Washington Post, Financial Times, The Economist, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times та інші іноземні англомовні ЗМІ.

У червні 2019 року на прохання Державного департаменту США, Посольства України в США та українських організацій в Америці, назва «Kyiv» була офіційно затверджена Радою США з географічних назв як єдина правильна, внаслідок чого нову назву почав використовувати весь федеральний уряд США.

З моменту початку кампанії десятки аеропортів та авіакомпаній перейшли на використання назви «Kyiv», навіть ще до того як нову назву затвердила IATA (International Air Transport Association). Наприкінці червня 2020 року на транслітерацію назви Києва з української пристала соцмережа Facebook. 16 вересня 2020 року англомовна Вікіпедія перейменувала статтю про Київ із «Kiev» на «Kyiv».

Ми закликаємо великого футболіста Серхіо Рамоса наслідувати передовий досвід світових ЗМІ, авіакомпаній, міжнародних організацій та соціальних мереж і змінити напис «Kiev» у татуюванні на нозі на «Kyiv».

Українці будуть максимально вдячні! І навіть не будуть ображатись на останні два голи Серхіо Рамоса у ворота збірної України, які він забив 6 вересня у Мадриді на Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.
