Liverpool flop Coates closing in on return to old club Nacional

Sebastian Coates, Liverpool's forgotten defender, claims he is leaving Anfield to return to his old club Nacional in Uruguay to complete his rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament injury.

Coates joined Liverpool in the summer of 2011, when Kenny Dalglish made a raft of signings, on the back of some impressive performances for Uruguay in their Copa America victory but has struggled to make an impact.

Liverpool are prepared to allow the centre-back to continue his rehabilitation in his homeland with a view to him regaining fitness and being able to get some match practice before this summer's tournament in Brazil.

The 23-year-old has been sidelined since tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in a knee while on international duty for Uruguay in August.

'It would be beautiful to join Nacional and complete my recovery in Uruguay with my family and friends,' said Coates. 'The negotiations can be hard sometimes and we have to wait a bit.'

Liverpool have yet to confirm whether they are giving permission for any loan deal to go through.

Coates moved to Anfield from Nacional in a £7million deal but struggled to force his way into the first team.

The centre-back has made just 24 appearances in that time, half of which have been in the Premier League, and scored two goals.
