  • Goals from Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena for Costa Rica
  • Uruguay had taken the lead through an Edinson Cavani penalty
  • Forlan insists they can still beat England and Italy to get out of Group D
  • Luis Suarez has a chance of being fit, according to coach Oscar Tabarez
  • Uruguay will be without Maxi Pereira for England game after sending off

Diego Forlan believes that Uruguay can recover from their shock 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica in the World Cup opener and progress - but only if they improve.

Goals from Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena shocked La Celeste, who had taken the lead through an Edinson Cavani penalty.

But despite the loss, Forlan is confident that Uruguay's tournament in Brazil is far from over and they can go further, just as they did in South Africa four years ago when they reached the semi-finals.

He told the Ovacion newspaper: 'We've been in situations like this before and there is no reason why we cannot overcome this.

'This is football and everything is possible.

'But this is not over, absolutely not. There are two games left in the group and we will try to win both.

'We have to improve but we still have chances to progress.'

And Forlan fired a warning shot at England, telling Roy Hodgson's men that the reigning Copa America champions will be ready when they meet on Thursday.

Uruguay started without their all-time record goalscorer Luis Suarez against Costa Rica.

The Liverpool striker underwent knee surgery last month and he was an unused substitute last night but Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez insists he can be fit for the England match.

'He (Suarez) is no longer injured,' he said.

'He has gone through the stages we had programmed for his recovery and he has trained with the team.

'We have four days left before the game against England and if he proves that he is in good form, we will consider the possibility of him playing.

'For us Suarez is a crucial player and everyone in the world of football knows that.'

Suarez scored 31 goals in 33 Premier League games as he was named Professional Footballers' Association's Player of the Year last season.

Uruguay will be definitely be without Maxi Pereira though after his sending off against Costa Rica.
