“I have decided to stop playing football.” The soccer world wasn’t prepared to hear these words from Sergio Aguero in 2021. Unfortunately, the inevitable transpired earlier than expected, as the Argentine was forced to hang up his boots due to heart issues. While Aguero’s early retirement devastated millions of fans, the striker’s dreams of becoming a World Champion with his beloved country shattered, despite hailing the will ‘to continue in Europe.’

In a recent episode of ‘CLANK!’ hosted by renowned Argentinian journalist Juan Pablo Varsky, Sergio Aguero opened up about how his desire to keep playing was hindered because of grievous health problems. “I can’t imagine how I am now 35 years old. I wanted to continue in Europe to participate in the 2022 World Cup. After that, the idea was to see if I could return to Independiente and play my last matches there.” Kun, however, was lucky enough to win the 2021 Copa America with Lionel Messi, an achievement that not only gave him relief but ‘will last a lifetime.’

Unfortunately, after the Copa America triumph, bad news came as Sergio Aguero left the pitch clenching his chest during an FC Barcelona match on October 30, 2021. Before the end of that year, he announced the heartbreaking news. “At the World Cup, I felt like I was part of that achievement. If I had not suffered from my heart problems, I would have been on the national team list. From the beginning of the tournament, I felt that if they won, it would be as if I had won with them,” he concluded.

How did Sergio Aguero profit from Argentina winning the World Cup?

Apart from being a fervent supporter of his country’s national team, Sergio Aguero engaged in some gambling during the World Cup. He placed a noteworthy wager on Lionel Messi to take home the Golden Ball. Messi’s incredible performance—7 goals and 3 assists—surely earned him the award, confirming Aguero’s prediction.

Interestingly, Sergio Aguero placed this wager the day before the World Cup final and even forgot about it. He revealed to his 31 million Instagram followers that he had earned about $8.2k from the bet. Even if Lionel Messi wasn’t able to make an immediate impact on the game, Aguero’s wager paid off generously!

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
