Ever so often we’re reminded that athletes are the same as everyone else. Despite all the trickery and skill they display on the court, they are ultimately human. While, of course, we all know this, it is easy to be captivated beyond belief by what they do on the court. However, today is a day of confrontation, not captivation, as Brazilian volleyball champion Walewska Oliveira dies aged only 43. The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) announced the news in a press release, expressing their deepest sympathies.

While Oliveira’s cause of death has not been revealed as of yet, many believe the former athlete committed suicide based on the details made public.

Death of a Legend

While little is known about Oliveira’s death, Sao Paulo authorities reported that she came pummelling down from the 17th floor of her residential building. Despite the efforts of emergency responders to revive her at the scene, Oliveira ultimately succumbed to death. Radamés Lattari, the President of CBV, paid his respects to Oliveira, claiming her career in volleyball will be remembered forever.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) also did its part to acknowledge Oliveira’s impressive life and career. To pay their respects, Brazil’s volleyball team wore armbands bearing Oliveira’s #1 in their match against Turkey on September 22. However, despite their best efforts, the Brazilians failed to overcome the Turkish team.

Oliveira retired from competition only last year, leaving behind a rich legacy. She was a revered athlete across Brazil, having won the Olympic Gold in 2008 in Beijing. Oliveira participated in three Olympic games, finishing on the podium in 2000 and 2008. She barely missed the podium in 2004, placing fourth in Athens. Additionally, she also played internationally for Spain, Russia, and Italy, making an on the sport at a global level.

Oliveira’s Name Will Live On

Everyone around Oliveira remembered her as an iconic figure. Teammates, colleagues, and friends saw her as a role model and an inspiration. Thaisa Menezes, a central player who represented Brazil with Oliveira, expressed her deepest condolences and recounted the profound impact that Oliveira’s attitude and resilience had on her. She described Oliveira as a great icon of the sport and someone who represented Brazil with great pride.

The volleyball community worldwide will never forget Oliveira’s name. She will live on through the countless lives she touched and the people she inspired. While her untimely passing will always be remembered as an unfortunate end to a beautiful life, her memory will live on forever.
