The Swiss needed a second half goal from Admir Mehmedi to steal the point that keeps them on course for the knockout stages, but they rarely looked like taking all three as Romania lived comfortably with their attacking threat in Paris.
Things looked bleak for Switzerland when Bogdan Stancu netted his second penalty of the tournament after 18 minutes, but afterwards Petkovic remained buoyant despite his side being likely to need a point against the hosts on Sunday to guarantee progression.
"We created lots of chances but only managed to score one unfortunately", he said. "I’m not concerned about the lack of goals. You have to get into those positions first. We’ll now start looking forward to the France game and make sure we’re as prepared as we can be for that."
Granit Xhaka, who was one of Switzerland's liveliest attacking threats, called for optimism despite the team's lack of success in front of goal.
"We should have been 2-0 or 3-0 in front at half-time", he said. "We created so many chances to score. The France game will be an incredible experience for us."
Mehmedi, whose fizzing drive early in the second half brought Switzerland level and offered a reminder of the attacking talent in the side, was keen to look ahead to what might be next for his side should they overcome their final Group A hurdle on Sunday.
"Of course we’re a little disappointed that we only drew 1-1", the goalscorer said. "We created a lot of chances and perhaps should have scored one or two more, but we go into the France game full of confidence. If we qualify for the next round we might play Germany, which should be fairly straightforward for us."
