Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer Dubbed New Germany Captain

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

After the retirement of Bastian Schweinsteiger from the German international team on Wednesday, the German Football Association named Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer as the newest captain to the team.

In a tearful and fairly sad moment, ex-Bayern Munich and current Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger played his last game for Germany in a 2-0 win over Finland in an international friendly.

Bastian Schweinsteiger played 13 seasons with Bayern Munich until he was traded to Manchester United, and during his time with Bayern, he also became a well loved figure at the international level.  He was a part of the incredible squad that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and he was named captain of the squad after Bayern Munich defender Phillip Lahm retired. News of his international retirement is saddening for just about everyone, but however sad this news is, it also comes with a bit of happy news for Bayern Munich fans.

Renowned goalkeeper, nicknamed “Sweeper Keeper”, Manuel Neuer will replace Bastian Schweinsteiger as the captain for the German national team as they continue 2018 World Cup Qualifying and World Cup preparation.

Manuel Neuer made his debut with the German national team in 2009, and since then he has tallied 71 caps with the team.  In his time with Germany so far, he has conceded just 52 goals total.  The 30 year old played a critical role in the winning of the 2014 World Cup and he will continue to be an extremely important role for the team in future tournaments.

“It’s a huge honour for me and it fills me with pride. We all know, though, that we need numerous leading players on the field if we want to be successful” said Neuer of being named captain.  Players that will help him lead the German team will certainly include Bayern Munich teammates Jerome Boateng, Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels.
