Nigel de Jong is open to contract extension talks at AC Milan, with his current deal due to expire next summer.

If no fresh terms are agreed, the combative midfielder will drop into the free agent pool in 2015.

He is, however, prepared to meet with Milan in an effort to thrash out an agreement which suits all parties.

De Jong is not looking for a new challenge, despite attracting attention from other top clubs.

Manchester United, now under the guidance of De Jong's former boss with the Dutch national side Louis van Gaal, were heavily linked with an approach during the last transfer window.

Such a switch would return the 29-year-old to familiar surroundings, with three years spent at Manchester City between 2009 and 2012.

United eventually turned their attention to another Netherlands international, Daley Blind, and De Jong has hinted that there is little chance of him making a similar move any time soon.

He said: "My contract is a question for (Adriano) Galliani.

"I'm happy here in Milan. I don't see any problems for a renewal. Let's hope we still have time."
