Who made the Best of Africa European African Dream Team?

African players have regularly been among the top stars and the biggest attractions in the Premier League, from the likes of Daniel Amokachi and Tony Yeboah in the mid-90s through today’s most high-profile players such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Alex Iwobi.
However, the league has also been boosted by the contributions of numerous stars of African origin who went on to represent European nations—many with distinction—at senior level.

At Sunday’s Best of Africa Awards ceremony in London, to celebrate and promote modern African stories through sport and other ventures, the BoA team will reveal their all-time Dream XI of European internationals of African origin to have featured in the top flight.

Here are the 11 stars who made the BoA’s European African Dream Team.

Best of Africa Euro-African Dream Team

The France international only enjoyed a brief spell in England, with Crystal Palace, but is a legend at Olympique de Marseille where he's approaching 400 Ligue 1 appearances.
The Kinshasa-born stopper has also amassed 28 France caps, and it would have been many more had his career not overlapped with Hugo Lloris.

Steve Mandanda

One of the finest defenders of his generation, Boateng has represented Germany at three World Cups and two European Championships, winning the world title with the national team in 2014.
It could have all been so different had he, like brother Kevin-Prince Boateng, opted to represent Ghana.

The 31-year-old won the FA Cup with Manchester City, and has gone on to clinch a whopping seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich.

Jerome Boateng

Perhaps the greatest player to feature for Manchester City, Kompany departed Eastlands this summer to return to Belgium with Anderlecht, having won four Premier League titles.
He remains beloved by City fans for his heroic displays as captain, even though his latter years at the club were often punctuated by injury.

Kompany’s father is Congolese.

Vincent Kompany

One of the key figures in France’s 1998 World Cup-winning side, Desailly was an imperious defensive midfielder and then centre-back, also clinching European Cups with Olympique de Marseille and AC Milan.
The Accra-born powerhouse enjoyed six years with Chelsea, although he departed the club before they truly entered their glory years under Jose Mourinho.

Marcel Desailly

The current Montreal Impact full-back amassed 65 appearances for France, but it could have been a different story had he opted to represent Senegal, the land of his parents.
The right-sider spent seven years at Arsenal before moving onto Manchester City, and while he failed to win the Premier League title at either club, he was an FA Cup winner with the Gunners in 2014.

Sagna was part of the France squad at two World Cups, and was a defeated finalist on home soil at Euro 2016.

Bacary Sagna

Starting on the opposite flank from Sagna in our BoA Euro-African Dream is Evra, who could have also represented Senegal but opted instead for an international career with France.
Evra, a diplomat’s son, was born in Dakar, to parents of Cape Verdean and Guinean origin.

He’s best known for his time with Manchester United, with whom he made 273 league appearances, winning the title on five occasions, and also becoming a European champion in 2008.

The left-back captained France, for whom he made 81 appearances.

Patrice Evra

Former Netherlands international Boateng represented five different English clubs during his near 20-year career, excelling for the likes of Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Coventry City.
The tough-tackling central midfielder’s finest hour came in the 2004 League Cup final, when he was victorious with Boro.

He was born in Ghana, but moved to Europe as a youngster.

George Boateng

A critically underrated talent during his time at Real Madrid, Makelele was the lynchpin that held the side together, admired by his teammates, but not by Blancos president Florentino Perez, who opted to sell him to Chelsea.
Real’s loss was the Blues’ gain, and Makelele’s influence was clear in the 2004-05 season when they won the title emphatically.

The defensive midfielder made 71 appearances for France, despite being born in Kinshasa, and moved to Europe when he was four.

Claude Makelele

Lining up alongside Makelele and Boateng in our fearsome midfield trio is Vieira, who enjoyed immense success at Arsenal as the heartbeat of several fine Arsene Wenger’s sides.
A perfect blend of elegance and tenacity, Vieira represented the Gunners for nine years, winning three Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

He’d return to England, after time in Italy, to win a fourth FA Cup with Manchester City, and was also a World Cup winner with France in 1998.

The towering midfielder was born in Senegal and moved to France as a youngster. Like Evra, his mother is from Cape Verde.

Patrick Vieira

Lukaku may have left Manchester United under a cloud earlier this year, but it’s testament to his quality in England that his departure is already being felt at Old Trafford.
He averaged just under a goal every other game during two seasons with the Red Devils, having previously starred for Everton and West Bromwich Albion. His career in England began at Chelsea, who may also regret not keeping him around for longer.

The powerful striker has led the line for Belgium since 2010, despite being born to Congolese parents, including father Roger, who represented Zaire.

Romelu Lukaku

We complete our dream team with Balotelli, who was an almost unplayable prospect on his day during his prime with both Milan clubs, Manchester City, and later, OGC Nice.
The first assist of his career won City the title in 2012, and his 13-goal contribution to that campaign was evidence of his contribution within an excellent side.

Super Mario was born on Sicily, to Ghanaian parents, but has represented Italy at senior level, memorably firing the Azzurri to the 2012 European Championships final.
