Sir Alex Ferguson will be encouraged by Javier Hernandez’s superb strike in the final game of Manchester United’s pre-season tour of North America, despite the goal coming against his own side.

The Mexican international, who signed from United’s opponents Chivas Guadalajara, played the first-half for his former club as the home side marked Friday’s fixture to open their new 45,000-capacity Chivas Stadium.

Hernandez needed just eight minutes to provide the Chivas supporters with a suitable farewell gift. From Adolfo Bautista's chested lay-off, the 22-year-old rifled the ball first time into the bottom-right corner of the net from just outside the area.

Another new United recruit, defender Chris Smalling, levelled the score a minute later though; the former Fulham player climbing highest from a corner to guide his header into the net.

The Mexicans dominated the early exchanges though and deservedly went ahead again in the 38th minute. Hector Reynoso flicked the ball on from a free-kick to Bautista, who poked the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak in the United goal.

Paul Scholes brought his trademark poorly-timed tackle overseas and cemented his own place in Chivas history by picking up the first booking in the new stadium.

Second-half

Hernandez switched to his new club at half-time, replacing Dimitar Berbatov in the Red Devils attack, but he was unable to prevent his former employers adding to their lead in the 58th minute.

Reynoso’s header left Kuszczak stranded and United with a mountain to climb for the remainder of the tie.

Following good work by Tom Cleverley in the build up, Nani pulled one back for the visitors with a neat side-footed finish ten minutes before the full-time whistle, but they couldn't restore parity.

Manchester United: Kuszczak; De Laet (Rafael 65), Smalling, O’Shea, Fabio; Gibson (Nani 46), Scholes (Giggs 65), C. Evans (Fletcher 75), Cleverley; Berbatov (Hernandez 46, Welbeck 65), Diouf (Macheda 65).
