Leeds-linked Ander Iturraspe hailed as ‘phenomenal’

Leeds United have been linked with the player Marcelo Bielsa knows well.

AS reported in March that Leeds United may be interested in a whopper of a free transfer.

According to the Spanish outlet, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa might be keen on bringing Ander Iturraspe to Elland Road on a Bosman this summer.

Bielsa has previously worked with the 30-year-old midfielder at Athletic Bilbao and, on paper, it seems like it could be a fantastic coup for the Whites.

Iturraspe is a two-time Spain international and according to his Bilbao coach Gaizka Garitano, an outstanding professional.

Along with Iturraspe, who has spent 11 years with the Liga club, Mikel Rico will also be calling time on a lengthy spell at San Mames this summer.

And Garitano only had glowing endorsements for both players.

He told El Desmarque: “It’s a shame [they are leaving] because they are two players who have both given a lot to the club.

“Their behaviour has been phenomenal, both Mikel and Itu’s. We must thank them again for all they have given during these years. When they have been with me they have been two exemplary players with their behaviour, at work, on a daily basis.”

Iturraspe might be a better signing than first anticipated, if Leeds can nab him. He clearly has a leadership qualities, the like of which United have lacked at times this season.

Bielsa’s side should have already confirmed their Premier League return, but a disastrous Easter weekend saw them capitulate and consign themselves to the playoffs.

If – again, a big IF – Bielsa can bring him to West Yorkshire, what a signing he could be irrespective of what division the club is in next term.
