Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca missed their spot kicks as Colombia lost 4-3 on penalties against England after playing out a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

The two players are not the first to receive online abuse and death threats. After the defeat against Japan, Carlos Sanchez was also threatened. The midfielder had given away a penalty and received a red card in the third minute of the match after handling the ball in the box. A investigation has been launched into the threats.

Amidst all the outrage, few fans pointed out that July 2, one day before the Colombia vs England, was the 24th anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar.

The former Colombian footballer was shot dead after his own goal led to the elimination of his team from 1994 World Cup. The fans urged their fellow countrymen to keep calm.

"Don't wish for the death of Bacca and Uribe. Do we wish to repeat what happened to Andres Escobar? Is this Colombia? Games are won and lost, we are a real country," Brayan Sanchez wrote.

"The anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar and you are calling for the death of Bacca. Im sorry, I cant stand such sh*t people. Get out of my timeline," Lois Lane said.

Now they start to insult and threaten Uribe and Bacca. Yesterday was the 24th anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar, please, please! Lets learn how to lose as well, wrote Juan Se Moreno.

Four years ago in Brazil, Colombia romped to the quarter-finals for the first time on the back of four straight wins. There were huge expectations from the side as they arrived in Russia. However, they were never able to recreate the swagger of their pioneering 2014 side and that hasn't gone down well with the fans.
