Wataru Endo netted a consolation goal in Japan's 2-1 defeat by Iraq at the Asian Cup on Friday.
Liverpool midfielder Endo captained his nation once more as he completed the full fixture at Education City Stadium in Qatar.
Endo guided a header home from a Reo Hatate corner in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the contest to cut the deficit for his country.
Iraq, though, secured the win in the Group D match courtesy of a double from Aymen Hussein during the first half.
Japan, who beat Vietnam in their opening game, will next take on Indonesia in their final group contest on Wednesday as they aim to progress to the knockout stages.
