James Rodriguez made his official debut with his new team, Sao Paulo, against Flamengo at Maracana, a stadium that brings back good memories of his excellent participation in the 2014 World Cup.
The Colombia international came on in the 20th minute of the second half, with his team ahead after a goal scored by Lucas Moura in the 38th minute. The former Tottenham Hotspur player returned to his country after 11 years away. In his first game as a starter and captain, he scored a goal.
James made good passes and had a clear chance in the 77th minute, the ball going just wide after a shot that could have been the winning goal for Sao Paulo.
In stoppage time, a penalty committed by teammate Michel Araujo ended with Flamengo's equalizer, converted by Pedro.
After the final whistle, James spoke to Brazilian TV. He said that he was feeling good about his return to action and reminisced about his performance for Colombia at Maracana.
"Physically, I'm fine," James said.
"The team played a very good game, and we deserved to win, but these things happen.
"I'm very happy to be back here. I played a significant role in the game that helped us progress to the quarter-finals, but now we have to focus on Wednesday."
