Zidane celebrates sublime year

Florentino and Zidane: History and a hug in Yokohama

The year of 2016 was one that belonged to Zinedine Zidane, who ended it with another trophy, making it three for the French tactician.

Each of them were equally important to Real Madrid as the club once more made history in some style.

Zidane arrived at the club as a gamble on the back of the unsuccessful and short-lived Rafael Benitez era and went on to achieve a quick and historic treble.

The first didn't come without some suffering along the way as they once more won the Champions League, before doing likewise with the European Super Cup and then adding a fifth Club World Cup to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu trophy room.

It is an immaculate streak for a very impressive team and Zidane has proven himself more than capable to be up to the task.

He arrived on January 4, charged with transforming the club but in particular with helping them regain their identity that had been missing.

The treble of trophies has been won alongside a tremendous 37-game undefeated streak, with their last loss coming in last season's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Wolfsburg.

That and his first derby against Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu are the only two games in which Zidane has tasted defeat as a coach.

Just as the Frenchman was born to play for Real Madrid, he was equally born to coach them and lead them from the sidelines.

In just one year, he has already won the same amount of titles that Jose Mourinho did in three years in the Spanish capital.

As a coach, Zidane dispels the myth that experience is crucial to success, as he repeated the same hat-trick of trophies that he won as a player in 2002.

It isn't as if 'Zizou' has been lucky along the way either. In fact, it is Real Madrid who are lucky to have him.
