Tunisia ended their World Cup on a high after turning their final Group G match on its head.

Wahbi Khazri set up the first goal and scored the second to give the North African side their first World Cup win in 40 years with a 2-1 victory over debutants Panama in their final Group G match on Thursday.

Fakhreddine Ben Youssef turned in Khazri's perfect cross in the 51st minute to cancel out a first-half own goal by defender Yassine Meriah, with the ball taking a big deflection off a shot by Panama winger Jose Luis Rodriguez in the 33rd minute.

Making their fifth World Cup appearance, Tunisia dominated possession and took the lead after 66 minutes when Khazri finished of a sleek passing move with a tap-in.

Tunisia were the first African country to win a World Cup finals game, beating Mexico in Argentina in 1978, but had since drawn four and lost nine, including Saturday's 5-2 defeat by Belgium.

Both teams had already failed to progress to the last 16 with Belgium and England qualifying from the group.

Aymen Mathlouthi became the third goalkeeper to be used by the African this tournament.

Mathlouthi started after injuries to Mouez Hassan and Farouk Ben Mustapha in Tunisia's previous Group G games against Belgium and England.

In fact they were so hit by injuries that it meant even coach Nabil Maaloul had to go in goal for the warm up.

Tunisia made six changes from the 5-2 defeat to Belgium with Oussama Haddadi, Rami Bedoui, Ghaylene Chaalali, Hamdi Naguez and Naim Sliti joining Mathlouthi in the line-up.

Keeper crisis forces Tunisia manager Nabil Maaloul to go IN GOAL

Tunisia boss Nabil Maaloul responded to his side’s goalkeeper injury crisis by donning the gloves himself in their final training session before facing Panama.

The 55-year-old - who was a midfielder in his playing days - has seen both Mouez Hassen and Farouk Ben Mustapha ruled out during this tournament, leaving only third-choice Aymen Mathlouthi available.

He has been named in the starting line-up for the Eagles of Carthage’s final Group G game against Panama, but the absence of a second goalkeeper in Thursday’s final training session forced the boss to go between sticks.

And he looked to be loving it.

Tunisia change six - Panama just the four

Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul made six changes to the side that lost 5-2 to Belgium, including the forced choice of third-string goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi, in their final World Cup Group G match against Panama in Saransk on Thursday.

The two top keepers are both injured and striker Fakhreddine Ben Youssef will act as Mathlouthi’s back-up after FIFA rejected Tunisia’s request to add a replacement keeper to the squad. Defenders Dylan Bronn and Syam Ben Youssef were also ruled out due to injuries suffered against Belgium.

Panama coach Hernan Dario Gomez made four changes to the side that lost 6-1 to England, with midfielder Armando Cooper and defender Michael Murillo missing out through suspension.

Defenders Adolfo Machado and Luis Ovalle come into the side, along with striker Gabriel Torres and midfielder Ricardo Avila. Neither team can reach the knockout phase, with England and Belgium meeting in Kaliningrad in the other Group G match to decide the two top places.

Here's a closer look at the Panama line up

And the teams are in...

Panama coach dreams of winning World Cup match

Panama supporters celebrated their first-ever World Cup goal with vigour on Sunday, despite it coming at the end of a 6-1 thrashing to England.

Head coach Hernan Dario Gomez wants to leave Russia with at least a point and believes victory would have the whole country smiling upon their return. “We are doing everything we can to get a positive result for Panama,” he said.

“It will not be as intense as our two games against the European teams, we are again the underdogs but we want to take at least one point back to Panama.” “We are still in the World Cup, we haven’t packed our bags yet and for us anything positive is important.

“To win and get three points would be pure happiness for us and the entire country, we would be writing a page in the history books so we still have a will to work.

“We will try to make sure we keep our balance and we still have the dream to win the match and that hasn’t changed.”

Tunisia hoping to solve keeper crisis

Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul is hopeful that standby goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifia will be given FIFA clearance to join his squad ahead of their Group G finale against Panama.

Both nations have already been eliminated from the World Cup after defeats to England and Belgium, with their meeting in Saransk on Thursday now a battle to avoid finishing bottom of the group.

Tunisia will be favourites to get their first win in Russia, despite the fact they have several injury concerns.

Maaloul’s main headache comes in goal where both Mouez Hassen and Farouk Ben Mustapha have been ruled out. Hassen suffered a shoulder injury early on in the 2-1 defeat to England while Ben Mustapha was hurt in training on Tuesday.

That leaves just Aymen Mathlouthi as Tunisia’s only fit goalkeeper, the 33-year-old having yet to feature in the finals. Ben Cheifia was part of the 29-man preliminary squad and Maaloul revealed he is now en route to Russia in the hope he will be allowed to be involved in the game with Panama.

“The injuries have ravaged our team but that is God’s will - it is true that we have two goalkeepers who are injured and this is a dilemma for us,”

Maaloul said at his pre-match press conference. “We only have one goalkeeper, Aymen Mathlouthi, and perhaps Ben Cherifia who arrived in Moscow will be coming here to Saransk soon.

“According to FIFA, we should be able to add him to the squad - we are still waiting for the decision and if FIFA does not approve of this addition we will have to find a solution, maybe Aymen will be our only option.”
