The injury list keeps growing ahead of Qatar 2022. A few too many stars have been left of the World Cup due to their ill-timed injuries, with Sadio Mané’s being the latest in a long list. France has suffered most of the injuries to the squad.
Paul Pogba (France)
The French midfielder (29) injured his knee during the preseason and had surgery in September to repair the damaged meniscus. He went back to training, but his agent confirmed on October 31st that he wouldn’t see action with France or Juventus
N’Golo Kanté (France)
The Chelsea midfielder suffered a setback while recovering from a tendon injury that has kept him out of the last two matches in the Premier League. He’ll be out for four months after going through surgery.
Presnel Kimpembe (France)
The player from PSG will miss the World Cup because he couldn’t recover from his tendon injury. Axel Disasi from Monaco has taken his spot on the roster.
Timo Werner (Germany)
The striker from RB Leipzig (26) suffered an ankle injury during the team’s victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League in November. He will be out for the rest of the season.
Reece James
The right-wing (22) injured his knee during Chelsea’s Champions League match against Milan in October, and it was announced that he wouldn’t be part of the England team.
Diogo Jota (Portugal)
The Liverpool striker will miss the tournament due to a calf injury he suffered during the match against Manchester City, but Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has assured that he won’t need surgery.
Giovanni Lo Celso (Argentina)
The midfielder suffered a hamstring injury while he played with Villarreal. Manager Lionel Scaloni has called him “irreplaceable” for the squad, no doubt a tough loss for Argentina.
Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)
The forward from Real Sociedad was one of Luis Enrique’s starters for Qatar, he’s out due to a serious ACL injury that will keep him out until January.
Marco Reus (Germany)
The Borussia Dortmund captain suffered an ankle injury and couldn’t recover on time. Reus also missed the World Cup in 2014 after he got injured before the Germany-Brasil.
Ben Chilwell (England)
The left-back suffered a tendon injury during the Chelsea match against Dinamo Zagreb, and it was shortly confirmed that he was out of the World Cup.
Georginio Wijaldum (Netherlands)
The Dutch midfielder suffered a tibia fracture while training with Roma. He’s expected to sit out the rest of the season.
Sadio Mané (Senegal)
The worst news for Senegal was confirmed yesterday: Sadio Mané, their star player, will miss the World Cup. A second MRI revealed that the Bayern Munich wing will have to go under surgery to fix his fibula.
Christopher Nkunku (France)
The forward from Leipzig was part of the France squad for the World Cup, but he was ruled out after suffering a left knee injury during training.
