Alex Iwobi: Nigeria will make amends after Guinea-Bissau loss

Following Nigeria's unexpected 1-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, Alex Iwobi has pledged that his team will recover.

The defeat, which saw Mama Balde score for the Wild Dogs, was considered one of the most significant upsets in the tournament's history, especially considering the 81-point gap between the teams in the FIFA world rankings.

"As players and staff, we know we have to react to this result," said Iwobi.

"All we can do is improve and, to the fans, all I can say is that they should stick by us and support us because we give 100 percent not just for ourselves, but also for our nation.

"Next time we are going to do our best and make the country proud."

Playing for the French top-flight team Troyes, Balde netted the winning goal at the 30-minute mark in Abuja, propelling Guinea-Bissau to the top of the table in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round.

The Portuguese-speaking nation currently sits with seven points, followed by Nigeria with six, Sierra Leone with two, and Sao Tome e Principe with one point, at the halfway mark of the six-round mini-league.

The top two teams will advance to the finals.
